What's happened to Myspace?

12 Jun 13 - 09:26 PM (#3525837)
Subject: BS: What's happened to Myspace?
From: PHJim

I just went to my myspace page to grab a photo and found that I can't negotiate the site any more. I tried to check out some other sites and they're in the same state. Does this mean that everything I have put on myspace is lost?
I realise that few folks use it any more, but it used to be way better for musicians than facebook.

It's in Limbo and may be sold to Yahoo, last I heard.

Yesterday, I found my classic MySpace had been forced over to the new Myspace, which meant that the Blog, with all 230 of my poems, is gone for good. It still seems to be a good place for music, though, and perhaps we can now post more than 10 tracks..? E.g. - https://myspace.com/walkaboutsverse

MySpace fucked us over years ago. Why do people thing it will be any different now or in future? IMO, if you stayed with MySpace after the first screwing around you are getting what you deserve.

So the term "re-launch" is really a misnomer. It sounds more like a new launch. They disappear/alienate their existing user base and lose whatever loyal fans remained. That's throwing away their chief asset. Way to go, guys.

I looked up the old cooper and nelson page, after reading this thread. It's still there, but not easy to negotiate. The videos I posted, independent of youtube disappeared. I did get several emails from myspace welcoming me back. Not sure I'll do so as regularly as I used to.

At an earlier rescrewing I tried to get out but it wouldn't accept any password etc. Just looked now and it is certainly the worst its been. A small pic of me and my name, an invisible menu below and a screen full of a red and grey glow! Useless.

From this perspective it looks fine, JHW. However, I quit MySpace when they changed the look and utility about five(?) years back. There was NO reason for them not to provide time for 'customer' input. Woke up one day and there it was, different. Pissed me off so much I deleted the account then wrote to tell the MySpace people to get stuffed--not that politely--soonest. Haven't trusted them since.

I ran four MySpace Sites for my folk club, festival, barn dance band and the African musicians that I support. This latest re-vamp has made nonsense of everything that I had loaded on these four sites so I will be abandoning them.

PHJim your page looks much like mine, most of the screen blank space, your pic top left with an unreadable menu below.
Vic Smith 'revamp has made nonsense of them' sums it up perfectly.

What baffles me about free sites wrecking things is you'd have thought that they and their shareholders would want to keep users as they make their money from advertising. Yahoo Email have finally kicked me out of access to their Classic blue version and up comes, take it or leave it, the Purple version which isn't a patch on the blue one so I'm looking elsewhere. Facebook recently shuffled their page about so I got out, conveniently reducing the emails I get.

I get tons of reminders of Timberlake stuff, but my art has been vanquished to the winds.

Guess I should contact the NSA to get my stuff back. They should have it. Since MySpace probably/obviously doesn't.

They MUST have contact info for everyone,,,
and they COULD have sent messages warning
that they were about to trash all of our
treasured blogs, videos, etc. so we at
least could download them for our own
archives...actually i did catch wind
of the possible changes, and i did
save all the text from my blog there
which contained the play lists of
every radio show I have produced
since 2003 or so....

but some of the videos that i had there
are irreplaceable as a fire destroyed
the source footage....damn!

they have lost me as a "customer"
they seem to encourage people to
copy commercial music but they are
clueless about original music...
and poetry....and video...

and customer relations.....

they are flailing and failing...
and facebook left them in the dust
and they are desperately seeking
remedies to keep afloat...
unfortunately they just shot
holes in their life boat...
and will no doubt sink quickly
after dis-respecting their members
so rudely....no blogs? no video?
they are trying to reduce their
bandwidth, apparently, but they
made a bad decision!!

I tried to listen to some music from various artists' MySpace sites recently and it now insists you sign up before it will let you even start to listen at all. Just like b**** Facebook. Is this supposed to be publicly available information or not? Why why why can't things be left as they were? I was going to join MySpace ages ago but hadn't bothered, and now I'm glad I hadn't done - but it still annoys me.

You did better than I managed to, Moorly. I couldn't even FIND anywhere to search for artists that I know are on there. Or were.

It's so counter-productive that it's almost as though there's some scheme to deliberately lose money on this venture. Anybody remember The Producers?

I remember the Producers, Bonnie. Myspace seems to have a lot of flash and no substance. I noticed the songs I put up on the Cooper & Nelson sire were still there, but not much else. I haven't checked the February Sky page yet, but I suspect the same will be there. We jumped ship to facebook and google+ and those seems easier to deal with.

Phil, how do you share music on Facebook. If I post a tune, it soon scrolls down and disappears. The only ones I can save are videos that people have made at gigs and tagged me in, and sometimes I wish they would go away.
On the old Myspace, at least your tunes were always available to visitors to your site.

Justin Timberlake bought into Myspace a while back, hugely..and apparently wanted it to be far more about Musicians than anything else...

So, I guess the rest of us, you know, those who used to er..PROMOTE the musicians, Justin, were considered to be of no importance? Although it seems that they've fecked up the pages of nearly everyone..

All my blogs have gone and I'm so upsest..and I'm so angry with myself for not saving them, especially the one about Gloria and Charlie's beloved son, Peter, as I can't re-do that, not knowing the dates various things happened...

And..the other thing that's really upset me is my Harry Farr page has gone, on the song Reg Meuross wrote about him '...And Jesus Wept'

I do so much research for that page, so much time and energy and amazing information now all gone...

This site deserves to die, and fast. They've shown that they have NO respect for anyone and to them, it's all about promoting fecking Justin Timberlake and HIS ideas of what Myspace should be..

ALL they had to do was to get the word out that they were going to wipe out everyone's work, giving six months or so notice of their plans, for word WOULD have spread fast...

But, they don't give a shit about people...

I hope he loses a LOT of money over this...and that all other involved in Myspace do so, likewise.

PHJim, on facebook you can upload videos of your song in the video section, though I think few people really look there. There is also a way to post just the songs on a reverbnation part. I haven't used it. I agree that it would be nice to have some songs permanently there on the profile page. I try not to over post song video's on my page because I think it can get to be like a three year old bragging that they took a dump by themselves if you over do it. I did set up a youtube channel and figure people can go there if they want. I've just started putting songs up on soundcloud, that's pretty easy.

Hi Lizzie: I must have put in thousands of hours into MySpace, working on a daily basis since 2007. Yes, it is frustrating, having put that much effort.

But in some weird way, I feel this is part of the Internet "correcting itself" so to speak. It is unbelievable how one group of people can affect the work of millions of Artists...and not in some way, be held accountable. If they had done this to a museum, they would be in jail with stiff fines attached. In Cyberspace, they get a yawn...

What MySpace could have been is immeasurable. Home to Artists. Database for Music Supervisors to get music into film, video games, websites, etc. A Radio Station. A MASSIVE store offering low cost streaming, while PAYING FOR the music of the musicians whose work they feature.

This will go down in history as THE textbook on how to totally screw up a venture. I think there were, guessing here, about 350,000,000+/- users at one point, until they stopped posting how large YOUR (LOL) network was, remember THAT?

Oh well, as Tupac once was supposed to have said, "when life gives you tragedies, don't even bother to pick up the pieces, just move on."

But the wild one within me sure would like to have Justin Timberlake and his "team" walk through the gauntlet of those 350,000,000 users...BR

One more thing, (remembering Steve Jobs here)..While there is no obligation on the part of the owners of MySpace, i.e. hey put up your stuff, and if it goes, or if we feel like deleting it, well, that's OUR business.. & well, too bad.

But I wonder if there are any "Legal Eagles" looking into, shall we say, the "moral" obligation of destroying somebody's "Space" without notification? Undue stress, destruction of personal property and the like...

Are there any grounds, in this case, for a "class action", or "mass action" lawsuit?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_action

Probably in DREAMLAND on this one...BR

I'd LOVE for that to happen to them, Bob..and I think it is absolutely correct that they should be taken to court over this. I think the cold-blooded way they've done this says all...and anyone who continues to use their site must be brainless, for they could do it all over again, without a moment's hesitation.

It was the BEST of the best, before Greed took it over...

So many people will have lost irreplaceable things..and also lost so many contacts around the world too, for it was a huge friendship builder for many.

I found Gloria and Charlie PURELY because of Myspace, which led me to the sad but wondrous story of their son, Peter. I stumbled into Peter's words one day on a page of man called Clay. Clay worked as an English teacher to the Chinese Liberation Army (I kid you not)...was American himself..and he used his page as a bridge builder for his students, trying to get them to connect around the world with people, so that they would understand there was a very different world out there for them to explore...Some of them came to my page, and they were so sweet, especially a young woman called Lily...

I actually got to meet Gloria and Charlie a few years ago, whilst in New York..they live in New Jersey...and it was wonderful to be able to hug them at long last....

And THAT was the Magic of Myspace, which The Selfish & The Sociopaths have now destroyed, twice over...to the point of Oblivion.

May they not only be taken to court, but also found guilty and duly charged, preferably with crippling $ fines....

xxx

Lizzie: So many MySpace stories to tell. I met the guy who was the screenwriter for The Godfather. Met a famous "presenter", as you like to say in the UK. She was on a well known TV show, and at first, I thought it was somebody pretending to be her, but subsequent emails proved, that it was, in fact, her, via photos & her website. I met Chris Montez, my childhood/teen idol with the major hit, "Let's Dance," which I must have sung a zillion times...LOL

The one that sticks with me are the mothers of children who had died, asking if they could "friend" me after hearing "The Ghost of Elvis."

I had taken MySpace seriously. In the early days, it was common to hear, "what's your MySpace?," among musicians & industry people.

I used it as a reference point to contact music supervisors and the like. OMG This brings back the memory of a British conductor, who had heard my songs, and I must say, GRACIOUSLY told me that he would keep me in mind for projects.

So far, nothing has worked to contact Myspace. The address bar is acting differently from day to day, the blue line goes just past "bob" and then skips to the middle of my last name, as if it were trying to connect, but was being blocked (best guess)...

There were some SERIOUS people, with high-end sites on there, major acts from Nashville, etc.
I wonder what they are doing?

I'll be watching for the majors for any litigation action. I know a lot of people were hurt by MySpace. And it mystifies me how an entity can be worth multimillions in one year, then become nearly invisible in the next....BR

AND THEN...What I am pondering is the dangerous precedent this has set for the Internet as a whole. Does this mean that your Yahoo/Hotmail, etc. email account (with the files you have) can be wiped out in a nanosecond? With no recourse available to you?

And all that banking and financial/business stuff...Yikes...

I feel some Government/WORLD body should step in and tell Myspace, "you can't do that..."
