21 Jun 13 - 11:45 AM (#3528700) Subject: RE: BS: Cross species genetic engineering From: sciencegeek we have remnant DNA in our chromosomes that came from viruses... gee, that may be why certain viruses are used to insert selectd genes... we also have some lingering traces of genes that came from our close "cousin", the Neanderthals. we have been interbreeding species of plants for thousands of years to produce various food crops. the most well known interspecies cross to occur in mammals are the mule & jenney ( term used to indicate which species is the mom & which the dad). genetic manipulation is a tool that could be used to "restore" recently extinct species that have closely related relatives still extant. but another useful tool frequently misused is the gun... so, cross your fingers... because the genie is out of the bottle. |

Crossing one's fingers is only the start. Once they find a way to raise bees that can survive thier destruction of the bees, bee prices will be steep. And that is just one paranoid thought. |

My older cousin was involved in recombinant DNA research back in the early days of the program & it was always clear to me as an undergrad that molecular genetics would be the key to many medical advances. Bur also knew that the hands that hold the purse strings will control the research... sigh. The biggest obstacle to finding real solutions are the strident voices from each side trying to out scream each other. It's more important for them to "make their point" than to find a solution- which usually involves compromise. As a kid, I only knew a few others with asthma or food allergies. Everyone I knew lived on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches - usually on Wonder Bread. Far cry from today. My personal feeling is that the biggest driver for that is the fact that the solution to "clean drinking water" was waste water treatment plants that clean only part of the pollutants, leaving all the metabolic wastes from medicines similar products behind. Environmental factors are probably the prime cause for the current "epidemic" of metabolic disorders... and who knows how long it would take to restore a more benign situation. Boy, am I all doom & gloom this morning... lol And I avoid blogs as a rule, preferring to look for info in areas that have some peer review or balance. Anyone can blog... and I don't have the desire to wade through it all to find the ones that actually have a clue. Life is too short. :D |

I would love to tarpans restored in some fashion... though the Heck breed was a good effort, using domestic breeds probably lost some genetic material along the way. |

My question/ponderance is, it appears that we cannot trust large corporations like Monsanto to use such judgement. It is quite apparent that they have not done so in many cases to date. Hence my "paranoia". I also have a conspiracy theory that I believe to be entirely possible but posting such even as simply an idea for consideration and discussion would only bring out trolls and stalkers as it is rather akin to Ian Fleming's fantasy lit. |
