25 Jun 13 - 04:50 AM (#3530093) Subject: lonesome singer needs band From: GUEST,emmie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ijP1ec7nMQ Hi, having sung mainly to the bathroom for years I'm wanting to get out there a bit and do the odd performance and make some collaborative music. I'm busy working as a teacher and have a young child so I also am aware that to make this happen I need to find other people to practise with in my local area as I don't have as much free time as I would like. I've put up a link of me singing. I was wondering if there were any folk musicians in the south east london area who wanted to collaborate. |
25 Jun 13 - 05:07 AM (#3530094) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Will Fly Nice singing, Emmie. You might want to indicate the place(s) where you're able to rehearse/collaborate easily with a little more definition. South East London is quite a large catchment area! Also whether you can travel or whether you'd prefer someone else to travel to you. Lots of stuff happening in my neck of the woods, but it's Sussex and probably too far away for you. Best of luck, anyway. |
25 Jun 13 - 05:16 AM (#3530097) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: GUEST thanks Will Fly. Good advice there! I am able to travel but it needs to be fairly local so I am looking at the forest Hill area and anything thats fairly close by or easy to get to on public transport as I don't drive. I've joined a local group called the forest hill folk orchestra and also try to go to folk singers nights when I can at my local folk club. |

26 Jun 13 - 11:33 AM (#3530592) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Thank you GFS for giving me a like and feedback on youtube! That felt very special. I come from very folky roots with my dad and aunty folk singers as well as other folk instrument players in the family so its good to hear I sound authentic! Hopefully in time I will connect with some other players. I'm going to post on the mudcat facebook site just as soon as they ok me :-) Thanks also to Alex for having a listen :-) |
26 Jun 13 - 09:35 PM (#3530782) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Richard Bridge Try Orpington Friday Folk, Orpington Club, Blackheath, Bromley, Dartford Club, Folk Mob at Eltham, the rehomes of the 7 Stars (Foots Cray). Get Folk in Kent and Folk London. Google folk clubs. Ask father and aunt and said other folk players in family. Learn to drive. |
27 Jun 13 - 02:01 AM (#3530813) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Learning to drive is definitely a good idea. Family members are in Finland and Ireland now so would have to do some technological wizardry to get us together. Will keep trying the folk clubs though as I have a good local one! I know this may take some time and legwork! I'll probably have to learn to play an accompanying instrument!! |

27 Jun 13 - 01:45 PM (#3531021) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity You are welcome, Emmie!!! Now this might be not 'exactly' what you are looking for, but you might do better to incorporate not a whole band, but a couple of people with instruments..and the right technological(but not over done) mixing. Here's a link to a song(there are others), that I did, back in 1979, with just one vocalist, who played rhythm guitar, and myself on lead guitar. It's not pure 'folk' but it went over well..and still does. You can read the notes on the site....Just TWO guitars, one vocalist, done 'LIVE'...I used to have a rule(still do) that what ever you record in the studio, you MUST be able to play 'live' with the same sound...we did it here! It may not be exactly your style, but look what you might be able to consider, as far as sound and delivery! Stay in touch...if I can help you in some way, just holler! GfS |
27 Jun 13 - 05:52 PM (#3531109) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Thanks GFS, very lovely ambient sound on your link ( I must become a youtube member too so that I can leave you some feedback). I agree that there is a lot that could be done with two guitars. I'm working on the accompanying side of things as I play the flute which obviously doesn't work so great. I have an autoharp I need to start leaning hoe to play and just play open chords on the guitar at this stage. I was actually thinking about exploring using a loop pedal and layering up sounds myself. |
27 Jun 13 - 07:38 PM (#3531133) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity A loop pedal? ...for live performances or for recording..or both? Talk to me. GfS |
28 Jun 13 - 05:37 AM (#3531196) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93siGW-xxEQ like this artist...shes just played one instrument and looped it but you can layer up the sounds..KT Tunstall has made a career out of this! You could use this for both live and recording where you wouldn't need to pedal as you can loop it with the recording software! |
28 Jun 13 - 06:11 AM (#3531207) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: cooperman With live performance, unless you have time to concentrate on it, it's easy to get out of synch with a loop pedal. If you use one live, I suggest you should avoid complex layers. Hope it goes well. |
28 Jun 13 - 06:34 AM (#3531213) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: GUEST,FloraG I think you need to consider why you want a band? Do you want it just for fun - the joy of making music with others - or do you want it as a semi proffessional - a CD + gigs. Having said that - some bands start as one thing and end up as another. A lot of bands split up because of different ambitions. I've seen ads in local music shops - might be worth a try. You might consider joining a barn dance band with your flute - they are usually excellent musos too - and use them for non dance gigs. What are you like at harmony singing? It adds variety if you can lead but also join in when the others are singing. FloraG |
28 Jun 13 - 07:06 AM (#3531222) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Hi Cooperman. I know what you mean! I've only tried working with loops I made on garageband and I find that the more they have a beat the harder they are to play or sing with. A kind of arythmic drone or sound effects works best I think or as you say something super simple. |
28 Jun 13 - 07:10 AM (#3531225) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Hi Flora G. Sound advice. I was in an amateur belly dance troupe and the way everyone had a different agenda was incredible and did cause loads of disagreements and an eventual split! I think for me I want to make music for fun, for community gigs and also for recording and I want something flexible where we can dip in and out of it and have different groupings playing together. I play the flute in a community folk orchestra already which is wonderful and I'm working my way towards approaching people in the group but its harder than I thought! I LOVE singing in harmony in a small group so thats something also to work towards! I feel that if I keep putting out my intent something will come soon. My first venture outside the bathroom :-) |

28 Jun 13 - 10:56 PM (#3531542) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity OK..I watched the video, and I THINK I got what you're talking about. You create a 'digital loop' and then play and/or sing over it..but, in your case you want to use a flute. What threw me off was that you called it a 'loop enhancer',and I've never heard it referred to as that before. Yea, well guitarists have been using them for years..you can catch a whole phrase, or shorten the time, and use it as an effect, or even syncopate with it, with certain rhythms. ...What can I help you with? I had some ideas, of using two harmonizing flute lines weaving through and against each other....even using three part harmonies in loops, and then a 'wicked' flute line playing over it....but that would depend on the time you'd want to put into it....I guess the thing you'd want to keep in mind, is that 'genius' in music, (and other things as well), but especially in music, is where the technology meets the heart, and you use the technology to express the heart...and the more 'unashamed' you are at expressing it, the more virtuosic you play!...whether you use acoustics only, or electronic. Don't let ANYBODY tell you that you can't create lovely music from the heart, utilizing electronics...even acoustical instruments were the top of THAT technology, of their time. OK...keep talking...how can I help you? Regards! GfS |
29 Jun 13 - 06:23 PM (#3531885) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: michaelr You could put up at "classified ad" on Craigslist. Go to Community > Musicians.) I found three of my band's current members that way. Best of luck! |

30 Jun 13 - 06:43 AM (#3532012) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Hi GFS, I totally agree with your comments about music coming from the heart! I think this is whats so appealing about folk and if your hearts connected then musical accompaniment can be a whole range...I'm not a member of the folk police. Never knew about craigslist michealr so many thanks for that! |
30 Jun 13 - 05:45 PM (#3532215) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Speedwell For what it's worth another possibility is to find a local pub with a landlord/lady who's sympathetic to the folk cause and start a regular singaround session, say once a month. Ask the pub which are the low attendance days and they will (probably) welcome a few folkies in the pub. A separate space or room is good but it could be in the bar if it's not too noisy. This way you get to meet like minded souls and this could easily develop into a band eventually. Good luck. I liked your singing. |
01 Jul 13 - 12:03 PM (#3532320) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: BobKnight I think you'd sound wonderful with maybe just a guitar and fiddle backing. Mind you, I think you sound wonderful on your own as well. |
02 Jul 13 - 09:45 AM (#3532775) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: treewind Find a local folk club where you can (a) get in front of some people and sing and (b) meet potential band members. At a guess The Goose Is Out isn't a million miles away from you. Getting used to singing unaccompanied to an audience is a useful first step anyway, and you'll learn a lot, all of which will be useful whether or not a band happens. |
05 Jul 13 - 04:11 PM (#3534145) Subject: RE: lonesome singer needs band From: Emmie Thanks everyone! I am near the goose is out and do go to sessions there. I'm sure I will make some good contacts there ;-) I like the idea of trying to find people online but at the end of the day I know I'm probably going to find other musicians the traditional way! I'm looking at the froots forum as well now! |
