But there used to be and maybe still are diddly and humpty sessions - now, how to describe where? Come out of the Tart and Frig It down by the jetty and turn right up the narrow road and past the tiny cinema until you come to hell - the corner with the three pubs on and every leery yoof calling all the folkies smelly unwashed wierdos. Turn vaguely right but slightly inland and past the carpark and soon there is a pub there on the left - is it the Nelson? That used to be tune corner. |

From: Girl Friday I am told by many Broadstairs regulars that there is a session running most of the day in what used to be the Crown (pub that lays back on the left of the High Street opposite Superdrug . There is also a place called Four Candles nearer the campsite where a good deal of singing goes on. Probable music session as well. |

From: banjoman Best advice to anyone thinking of going to Broadstairs Don't It used to be a great festival rivalling most of the other major festivals. Now its too artist based with little room for those who just want to sing or play. Its now little more than a sort of pop festival with a limited fringe. As Richard says, most of the pubs just want electrified music/bands. The current organisers have little or no regard for those who supported the festival over many years. We have found that Whitby is a far better choice, and far more welcoming as well. |

For me festivals are a cost effective way of seeing a number of high profile performers without having to travel to different concert venues, or missing performers because they don't come to my neck of the woods. As for singers festivals, that's great if its what you want .... my experience of them is not good and some of them appalling. Broadstairs is not a suitable venue if you want organised sessions and a big fringe scene. It's evolved into something different and wow it is now bloody expensive but I like it and will go for at least some if not all of it this year. |

From: Richard Bridge I am hearing that there were many more pub sessions this year in place of the previous horrible wall-to-wall mid-atlantic rock. I am also hearing that the shuttle service was good (at least for bands). Indeed one fiend reports "a bloody good week, little to no rain, proper good company, great bands, proper showers and loos, proper food in the school with proper tables and chairs, cooked in a proper kitchen, cheap beer if you knew where to go, all in all why go anywhere else, defo back next year with ots of changes for the better this year, even more improvements on the cards I hope." What we need now (IMHO) is to use BOTH school sites and allow camping (at a modest profit cost) that is not tied to the season tickets. |

It would bring extra monies into the funds from campers only,some of whom would also buy the odd ticket for artists they would like to see. As an example Sidmouth charges £60 per person for camping, £35 per person for campsite passport which comes to £95 per person for the whole festival. If you have a caravan then it's a further £30 one-off supplement. Not figures to be sniffed at for camping in August. John Barden |

From: stormalong In response, Richard B, to your suggestion and call for a post-mortem, I can only give a personal take… I go more-or-less only to the participatory events - the Neptune, the Woodshed and Tom and Barbara's singaround. They're essentially sessions IMO but gently organised, not spontaneous/unofficial. We stay in B&B or, in previous years, self-catering in the town. Season tickets, especially when linked to camping, are a total mismatch for the sort of festival I actually experience and I would never buy one. I agree that it would be far better to uncouple the one-size-fits-all approach of linking the season ticket to camping. The modern way is to let people pay for what they want. The festival itself was much as I always experience it, i.e. brilliant apart from the almost intolerable 'fugginess' in some sessions. You have to be quite highly motivated to contend with that and, for me, staying awake is quite a problem. I've noticed a migration of emphasis towards the so-called 'Hub', i.e. campsite events. This is bad news for non-campers/non-season-ticket holders, but understandable in view of the decline in support by town pubs and the under-age drinking problem which BFW has seemingly attracted, despite TOTAL disconnection with the festival. For the first time there was a massive police presence this year. While reassuring in some respects, this is not the festival - or the Broadstairs - I once knew. I don't have an answer. It's depressing. I'll continue to enjoy the town festival as long as it lasts, but if it goes out of town I will very sadly be looking elsewhere for my annual high. Richard |

From: stormalong I believe there were nightly sessions in the 39 Steps (a new 'mini' pub with excellent beer at £3 a pint during the festival). I also heard mention of the Nelson, and then there is always 'The Shed', an informal daytime gathering in the seafront shelter. Perhaps someone with direct experience of the pub sessions could confirm? |

It is encouraging that pubs are moving away from the loud music and opting for sessions. this is probably a cash saving exerlike the early yearscise on their part. the Festival charges the landlords to have bands. The bus shelter session seems to be semi official now... not the spontaneous coming together of musos that it once was. Wonder if the police still moves buskers on. |
