Hi! Just thought I'd add my two penn'orth to this. I'm Wendy, from Reading in the UK (although I often yearn for the Highlands of Scotland - wierd for someone with Welsh blood?) I sing a bit and play whistle and flute, all purely for fun. Have only come to folk in the last few years since joining a local theatre group and singing with a guitarist friend there. Probably won't say much, as I'm more of a listener than a talker, but who knows? Have been lurking for a few weeks and this is a great place to lose yourself.

Bert, I'm from the West End of Dorset really, but now live not quite so close to the Upton Park ground as I used to, meaning, we still get gridlocked with cars on a match day, but I no longer have my garden and dining room illuminated by the floodlights, which is how close we USED to live!!

Canning Town has changed a great deal, even in the 9 years I've been here, the only good thing is the McDonalds and that is saying something!!

Poor Liz the Squeak - if McDonald's is truly "the only good thing" in your town, I beg you to get the hell out before it's too late. Next will come Burger King, then Wendy's, Rockets, Krystals, DQ's, and hundreds or thousands more (I admit to only slight exaggeration here).

"Up the Irons!!!". Family tradition has it that My great Grandfather Joe Hansell was the founder of what is now West Ham United. He worked at the Thames Iron Works. Most of the apprentices there came from a local school called St. Luke's and he organised a soccer team at the Iron Works who called themselves "St. Luke's Juveniles". The team eventually came to be called "Thames Iron Works" and then "West Ham United". The supporters cry of "Up the Irons!!!" originated in the Thames Iron Works days.

Well, I am now here, thanks to Barbara's informing me of the place...also thanks to my new computer... I live in Vancouver, WA..not far from my home town of Longview, although I spent many years in Seattle...and have also lived in Newfoundland and Maine and Alabama and Virginia...I was with Seattle Song Circle for a long time and started Rainycamp a few years ago....now when I can I go to events in Portland and hope to get more stuff to go to this side of the beautiful Columbia River...

To combine with another thread about our music influences...I grew up with a musical mother from Texas...was taught by Irish nuns...went to a small Catholic boarding school (was delighted to see Diane Dugaw mentioned here..she went too) on Cowlitz Prairie where we sang a lot...was with the Women's Army Corps in the Vietnam war and we sang a lot in training...some great singers...lived in Newfoundland in graduate school...can't beat it for music....wasn't allowed to play the radio at home when I grew up...except on Sunday morning when my mother went to another Mass...so I would stay and play the Scandinavian hour...just love those polkas etc...Well that is enough for now..

Bert, St Lukes is still there, undergoing a revamp recently, but my friend Alison is a priest there. I'm still not too familiar with that end, and living with a lifelong Gunners supporting father, was never allowed to mention teams the other side of the river, but the Hammers are big around here. The Boleyn is still their main haunt, although the Hammers pub in East Ham caters for the more militant element. There were talks earlier this year about a statue of Mooro to be placed near the ground, but nothing has come of it yet, unless they intend to put it outside the Queen's Market. The council are (supposedly) tarting it up, which means a new roof but same old crappy floor with potholes, but will mean a nice home for him, in sight of the ground and just where the toilets used to be....
