Not sure how to find the discussion here on Mudcat that ensued after Kelly's remains were re-interred earlier this year. Perhaps a mudelf could help. I recall some pretty vicious unfounded personal attacks on that thread from persons apparently only partially educated to whom I suggested further reading. Edward Snowden is seen as either (or both?) for example. Opinion is divided on the activities of Julian Assange and Bradley Manning for their confronting the powers of empire in order to inform citzens of the heart of darkness at the core of empire. My opinions I imagine are fairly obvious. A little sedition goes a long way I think. Prince Harry is a convenient conventional (?) high profile 'hero' because he serves mother and country in uniform and kills under orders (just like in his gamespace apparently, where he got lots of practice). I'm sure we can all think of examples of heroism and/or villainy to suit particular worldviews. Any and every soldier who dies is automatically a hero to mainstream patriots of course. A passionate little session that was indeed. Still I added a little more to my pool of knowledge about life, the universe, everything and Ned too! So I'm grateful for that. Hopefully a little more about Kelly et. al will come down the line again. As for messers Snowdon, Assange and Manning those stories are still being told. Reckon there'll be a song or two in it though. Sadly for all their efforts I'm not convinced there'll be a happy ending for the 'good guys'! Any budding Dylans out there? Cheers, Andrez |

The Kelly story is part of the contemporary fabric of Northeast Victoria, families' memories long and strong (once you get off the highway and away from the tourist traps). Officially, Ned's remains are in Greta cemetery, but I am reliably informed that there is but a block of concrete there, his final resting place somewhere more private. So, any thoughts on C19th Australian republicanism? How about C21st? Candidates for public office in Oz still swear oaths and affirmations to "Her Majesty, Her Heirs and Successors"; government ministers (including Prime Ministers) need permission from a Governor General before assuming office. |

I am strongly in favour of a republic in Australia but I also like the idea of the government swearing allegiance to something other than themselves - the something being independent of the government and a source of authority. English monarchs, GG's or christian/judeau ideas of god don't fit the bill. Don't think Ned or his heirs and successors would be much help here. Phil L |

One size fits all... @Andrez: that's the big question my friend. I've been reading 'Van Diemen's Land' by James Boyce, presently paused at the appendix on the genocide. Even in the daylight it's a difficult book to read, especially as I live on the island now, and it feels like it's all just down the road and only yesterday. Quite a different take on the the island's history to that more generally assumed. And take the case of that great Australian Pemulwuy, who led the Eora mob in a twelve year war of resistance against the invaders - now there was a hero. Actually, come to think of it, Republicans, or alleged Republicans (of the Australian variety) are noticeably quiet on the topic of Constitutional recognition of Australian Indigenous people!
