10 Jul 13 - 04:53 PM (#3536013) Subject: Obit: Toshi Seeger Passes From: EBarnacle I have just received word that Toshi Seeger passed over this morning, peacefully and surrounded by her family. Although Toshi was never known as a musician, she made it all possible. Among other things, she made sure that Pete was free to be out front in his many musical and humanitarian efforts. I first met her in 1968 at the New York Boat Show, where she and Pete had a booth set up to solicit money and membership for a replica of a Hudson River Sloop, which came to fruition in 1969 as the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. She was always a power behind and within the organization, being a major organizer of the festivals which became a major annual event and fundraising part of Clearwater's public face. In recent years, she had become increasingly enfeebled although she resisted her family's efforts to get her to use a motorized chair. At the Clearwater festivals, one of her nicknames was "The Dragon Lady" after the paint job on her golf cart. When I know more, I will add it. |

10 Jul 13 - 06:24 PM (#3536038) Subject: RE: Obit: Toshi Seeger Passes From: GUEST,Suzy T. Toshi was a huge influence on me, though she never knew it. At the Clearwater Festival many years ago (I'm thinking around 1980) I saw her picking up trash. She was running this huge festival, and yet, she was still willing to do whatever needed doing, even if it was picking up trash! I now run a much more modest event and I always help pick up the trash at the end of the day and when I do that, I always think of Toshi. R.I.P. She was amazing in so many ways. |

10 Jul 13 - 08:42 PM (#3536084) Subject: RE: Obit: Toshi Seeger Passes From: Sandra in Sydney In 1963 the Seegers visited Australia & Pete spent time at the Bush Music Club. In 2009 I sent Pete a letter recalling those days as his 90th birthday coincided with the 55th anniversary of the Club which is Australia's oldest folk club. I received in return a wonderful handwritten form-letter - scroll down to see it Pete Seeger and The Bush Music Club, 1963 which I treasure. The return address on teh envelope was Pete & Toshi Seeger. RIP Toshi, condolences to Pete & family. |

10 Jul 13 - 11:14 PM (#3536128) Subject: RE: Obit: Toshi Seeger Passes (9 Jul 2013) From: Stilly River Sage I met her very briefly when a friend and I were walking in the woods behind the friend's family home in Fishkill. I admired the cabin and the Burma Shave style signs along the road on the way up to it. She asked if I knew who Pete Seeger was. Yes, I did! We didn't intend to stop, we were just passing by, and Toshi left the house. It was a quick hello, they spoke for a couple of minutes, and we were on our way. It is the most amazingly peaceful location. They lived a full life there - condolences to Pete and the family, they must be heartbroken. SRS |
