I downloaded the latest Flah Player (version 11). Now I can't view videos. Youtube just shows black squares, and Facebook shows thumbnail but clicking on it makes it go blank. Any suggestions on fixing this would be appreciated. |

If you haven't done a restart since installing you might try it, and see if Flash works after the restart. Many programs, especially "accessory" stuff like Flash, don't say whether it's safe to install a new version on top of an existing one. When problems appear, a common recommendation is that you UNINSTALL all existing versions of the program, reboot, and then download and install the new one so that you get a "clean" new version. Since Be sure you get your download from a reputable site, in the case of Flash probably direct from Adobe. John |

I've just spent the whole weekend uninstalling- reinstalling --restarting. I've gone direct to the source. Before I started all this I was finding that You Tube kept giving me the Blue-Screen-of-Death unless I went in via Mozilla then it was OK. I tried to install Flash Player 11 so that I could download videos. Now I can't even view them via Explorer OR Mozilla. Watching this space more with hope than in anger (towards my computer that is) Joy |

I accepted an Adobe Flash update last week and it apparently installed the Zero Access Trojan, which took some time to remove. I found this site useful in solving the problem. |

A somewhat dated (possibly obsolete) Wikipedia article on Real Player indicates some features use Internet Explorer functions, so you might be able to enable/disable it in IE. [Look at Tools|Manage Add-ons in IE]. Whether you can do the same in other browsers is ... ????? Windows Control Panel generally offers only uninstall. The same Wiki article does say that Real Player "has been mostly supplanted by Flash" but I don't know how much credence to give that opinion. Some of the premium/paid versions of RP may have capabilities you'd want to keep, but a free version should be easily replaceable if you change your mind. According to some "white hats" Flash is no longer "the most mediocre program available," since Java took over the top postition when Oracle took Java away from Sun - but that's sort of a thread drift. ... If you're trying to install Flash, Adobe may tell you to disable Real Player. If you're trying to install Real Player, Real.com may tell you to disable Flash. Neither provider will tell you what conflicts between the two make it inadvisable to have both enabled at the same time, although there do seem to be some "ego conflicts." As when the teacher says the kids "don't play well together" it's often because certain of the "mommies don't get along" so there may be some of that too. Then, of course, there's the "third party" factor, since Microsoft doesn't really seem to like either very much - since they both(?) stopped letting Mickey put them in Windows as free/default options. There was a virus doing the rounds 6 months ago (sorry I have to repeat it) ON MACS. Called FlashBack or some such. Is this vaguely appropriate? The other problem with Macs (apart from the conceit that they don't get viruses) is the Java update that took a very long time for Apple to admit and issue - for security reasons. If they believe they are invulnerable then security updates are off the radar. Hope you have sorted the problem. |

Just a list of gibberish to me. Apparently there is a magazine article I must read ,but haven't done so yet. I suspected that the kids not playing nicely was the reason for Adobe wanting me to disable Real, so haven't done so. I'm using Firefox and not IE, as I want nothing to do with AOL which seems to control IE. Glad that Joybell has found her solution though. |

Flash tells me I need to upgrade so I go to Adobe & try to follow the instructions "Try" is the operative word - I even try to do the bit that says if it's taking forever, do whatever, which also doesn't work. Some programs try to bundle updates with a free whatsit from some other company that automatically installs unless you un-click a box. No, I don't want that. I've had my cookie on three computers at a time, and hers on two of them at the same time, and all worked just fine. One of the annoying features of Adobe updates recently is that you get a popup that says an update is available, but often it doesn't even say it's from Adobe until you click for "details." Even then, it may say Adobe but doesn't tell you whether its for the Reader or for Flash. I'd be perfectly happy to be rid of both of them, but some sites won't let you download a PDF unless you have the "real Adobe Reader" installed. (Although some that say you must have the Adobe reader aren't smart enough to notice that you read their junk in one that works instead.) John |

The computer shop had already recommended VLC media player, a free download so I obtained that and used it ever since. I did have Real player on the previous laptop. I haven't had any problem since the Flash update (except its declaration time and again that it needs updating). I have 11.7.700.224. Have watched Tour de France clips no prob but don't know how they work. ie what is actually playing them. |

Also I tried to see all the "extra" programs I was agreeing to but I missed a few. After handing over the whole thing to a pair of clever young men, and paying $40.00, Everything's great. I don't have anything I don't want. Funny thing is -- I'm forever trying to simplify my life and machines are fighting me. I'm waiting for the day I won't be able to use a toaster or a fridge without playing games with them. The TV is on the verge of winning the last round. I could have had it back Bank Holiday Monday, if 1/ they'd left a message, 2/ they'd rung my mobile , 3/ they'd bothered to call again. They claim to have sorted the problem, but they haven't !!!! Found partial solution through trial and error, but not 100 per cent. Phoning them only gets you to Curry's call centre and is totally n.b.g. |
