Chester UK. Have a go at Maypole dancing

This Sunday July 28th as part on the Northgate Festival Sundays I will be teaching Maypole in Northgate Street Chester.
An adult session at 1.30, family maypole 2.30, and a final session (youth?) at either 3.30 or 4 - I'm still negotiating with the musicians who are goin to play on that stage for the rest of the afternoon.
At 4.30 there will be an open air music-session (which may drift indoors when they reopen the road to traffic).

See you?

I've just posted this on http://have-a-go-dancesession.blogspot.co.uk/
"
There is an article in http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/chester-news/local-chester-news/2013/07/25/lor about the event.

The Street entertainers will be on first at 12.30. Come and enjoy the spectacle

then on the Northgate stage, near the walls :
1 -1.30 Black Cat Band (folk songs)
1.30- 2.00 Black Cat band play for adult Maypole dancing*
2.00-2.30 Mystery Band (singer songwriters**)
2.30 -3.00 Frank will lead the musicians*** for family Maypole dancing
3.00 - 3.30 Mystery Band**
Fingers crossed for fine weather. If 'rain stops play' we may be running late and the rest will merge flexibly till they move us to let the cars in
3.30 - 4.30 'Foreign exchange' Frank will lead musicians*** for Maypole dancing and http://www.rondezvous.co.uk/ French dance tunes.
4.30 -5.30 Musicians session on and around the stage

* Although this will be advertised as adult Maypole I would not expect anyone to leave a young child alone in the crowd. Share your ribbon, or let them stand in the middle as one of our mascots.

** The event organisers are providing these bands, so I will be surprised too.

*** Musicians could you please meet me and Frank before these spots (say 2.20 and 3.20) to agree a set list. If anyone wants the latest Rondez Vous? tune-book contact me

Say hello to me when you arrive. I'll be around from 11.30 and hard to miss in a black and orange flowery waistcoat."

The Mystery is revealed.
The 'bands' are singers. Sophie at 2.00 and Ian Clayton at 3.00.
I shall be interested to meet them.

A bit out of season in late July isn't it? Not that I'm having a go at it in the other sense. i'd love to see Maypole dancing for grownups.

I suppose this is the original form of pole dancing.

How did it go, Mo?

Starred sunny with people sitting on straw bales listening to Marilyn's Black Cat Band singing folk songs. Then a team of 8 (including 2 who really were complete strangers) did a bit of simple winding and unwinding holding a pair of ribbons each, then we persuaded more of they onlookers to take the spare ribbons and did a proper weave (like a grand chain). It started off uneven then suddenly took shape and the pole looked right. Took ages to reverse and unplait and it started drizzling as they finished.

The rest of the afternoon was short dry spells with torrential rain. The singers/musicians were on a covered stage but even that had to stop once. My pressed dancers got very wet. And to finish off, in a dry spell we had just assembled 16 ribbon holders when it really poured and everything stopped. After the stage had been dried off we played some French dance tunes, more for ourselves than the passers by, though one or two paused to listen on their way home.

So a mixed afternoon (typical British weather, especially as the school holidays have just started).

McG lets not get all symbolical. There was nothing remotely suggestive about our Synchronised Underwater Julypole Team.

Thanks, Mo. It seems that despite the rain you had people listening and others dancing, and that seems like a good thing.
