27 Jul 13 - 08:19 PM (#3542533) Subject: New autobiog by Bob Copper, July 2013 From: Desert Dancer In catching up on my Musical Traditions reading I was please to come on the latest review, by Vic Smith of the newly published book by Bob Copper: A Man of No Consequence. Here's a summary from the home page of the Copper Family website (the book has not yet been put on the Books page): The Copper Family is pleased to announce the publication of Bob Copper's final book, which had been completed and edited at the time of his death nine years ago. This volume fills in the many gaps left by his previous works. It provides a charming and detailed account of his life as a peacetime soldier in the Lifeguards between the wars, and his wartime service as Coroners Officer in Worthing during WW2. It also covers the early days of the English Folk Revival and subsequent involvement in the folk scene. His postwar career as a publican is related with some hilarious anecdotes. Here's Vic's review: clicky. ~ Becky in Long Beach |

29 Jul 13 - 08:27 PM (#3543352) Subject: RE: New autobiog by Bob Copper, July 2013 From: Thomas Stern Anyone know if there is a USA source. I tried ordering through Amazon UK, but they will not ship to US. Perhaps if there is enough interest, CAMSCO would supply it??? Thomas. |
30 Jul 13 - 02:16 AM (#3543424) Subject: RE: New autobiog by Bob Copper, July 2013 From: GUEST,Jon Dudley Sorry Thomas, this has long been a problem. When we travelled to the USA regularly we brought 'supplies' of material with us. Heinemann, the publishers of Bob's first three books, had an American arm and therefore distributed them properly - hence the number that were always produced at gigs for Bob to sign. Now, with our homespun (and I hope Vic will concur), but not amateur production, the best we could come up with is either to email us directly or take the Amazon route. The problem is payment - using Amazon takes care of that... Processing US cheques is too costly, sending cash through the mail is unadvisable and we're not big enough to set up a credit card account. Maybe there's something we could do via PayPal? In addition to Vic Smith's thorough and complimentary revue of 'A man of No Consequence' on Mustrad, there should be more appearing in fRoots, English Dance and Song, Stirrings, and hopefully The Guardian in due course. |
30 Jul 13 - 09:17 AM (#3543528) Subject: RE: New autobiog by Bob Copper, July 2013 From: Vic Smith Jon, we, at Lewes Folk Festival, have sold tickets to the USA and all over Europe using Paypal. It is very easy. We also use it to sell internationally Gambian batiks and CDs through our Compound Sounds website (Molly set it up for us in the first place!) Mention of Lewes Folk Festival reminds me, Jon, of a night that you might be interested in - an evening at the Royal Oak on Thursday October 10th with Shirley Collins giving a multimedia presentation called A Man of No Consequence followed by songs from The Copper Family & friends. |
30 Jul 13 - 11:13 AM (#3543581) Subject: RE: New autobiog by Bob Copper, July 2013 From: GUEST,Jon Dudley PayPal it is then! What would we do without Molly! Shameless publicist that you are...the night you speak of sounds unmissable...;-) |

30 Jul 13 - 12:36 PM (#3543612) Subject: RE: New autobiog by Bob Copper, July 2013 From: Edthefolkie Thanks Desert Dancer & Vic, have dashed onto Amazon and bought the last one from Coppershop. No doubt more on the way, as they say. I was so sad when Bob passed away. I always thought of him as a sort of Sussex version of my Lincolnshire father - I lent Dad "A Song For Every Season" years ago and he enjoyed it immensely. I cannot imagine how much alcohol would have been consumed had they met! But maybe they have now. |
