Hi guys.

I'm looking for the chords to the song Johnny Come Down to Hilo. Particularly the version from Salty Dick's (Jerry Bryant) uncensored sailor songs (sample can be heard at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/saltydick. It is track 7).

If you don't know the chords then please post the version you know.

Thanks alot.

It's a sea shanty, all that mattered was timing to get a job done, no chords.

Yeah, I've often wondered about that - why do people start threads asking for chords for a sea chantey? I suppose that knowing the chord structure does help in learning or remembering the melody; but it's, like, really really really annoying to hear somebody play a guitar [worse yet: an autoharp] along with a sea chantey. I feel like going up to the guitar and stomping on it.

It happens quite often in our Sacramento song circle, which uses the Rise Up Singing songbook. The songbook includes chords for sea chanteys, which seems Sooooo wrong to me. Oh, and the Sacramento singers often insist on singing every word of the song - none of this call-and-response bit for them. Oh, and they corrected me when I sang "Rye-o Grande." But hey, I met my wife at that song circle when she was somebody else's date.....so it ain't all bad.

Hey Joe, it annoys me when people sing ' Ree o Grand '

No chords in ' Shanty's From The Seven Seas '

CK,

Salty Dick is sorta presenting it as one-man entertainment-comedy, hence the instrumental. It's a musical choice. So be it. In that case:
After you pick a key, identify the I, IV, and V chords. For example, if you're in key of C, then C, F, and G(or G7) chords. Then just sing and strum one of those chords. If it sounds good, you've got it! If not, pick another. To start you off, it sounds like the verses begin IV I IV I ...

On the other hand, as this is my rather crusty idea of chanty-singing—and the picture a vision of a scene it evokes in *my* mind— I have difficulty imagining anything strumming along with it! Most chanty singing was described by contemporary observers as "plaintive," "mournful," "wild" and so forth.

On the other other hand, if you think my vision of a chanty is pretty dull, take this one which is more fun!—but still required no chordal accompaniment to be great.

Thanks for all your replies and your time.

@Joe - Nothing can be so bad that it doesn't bring something good along!

The particular version I'm looking for chords for seem to be played on a banjo with no other instruments (the sample in the link is that version).

@Gibb - Thanks for the insight. I will try that out! I can see the point about some of the shanties sounding terrible using an instrument instead of just singing.

CK,
Yeah, it depends on what key you're playing in. I don't have any chord instruments nearby, but my ears tell me (I listened to the recording) that I IV and V are the only chords in the song.
So, key of C: C, F, and G chords
key of G: G, C and D chords
etc.
Honestly I think it would be faster just to try out the chords while listening then to try to write them down in some mutually comprehensible way on this board, so... go for it!

BTW, "Johnnie Come Down to Hilo", as a song divorced from context, is very much in the vein of a minstrel song. So one could easily create an appropriate-sounding instrumental accompaniment. It won't sound like a chanty/work-song, but it will sound like something that makes sense. Same goes for "Hog-eye." The classic minstrel music instruments were banjo, fiddle, bones, and maybe tambourine.

Well, it works with the major all the way through with the 7th only on 'poor old'.Like these guys .(Don't click on it Joe). Could start that way then work out a bit of variation. May have a go today if it stays quiet.

Yep, stick a basic C chord shape on then starting with C on 2nd string follow the tune generally hammering or lifting off with middle finger, keeping the basic chord shape, then G7 for 'old'. You should work it out from there.
