Beverly Hill Billies on-line

Thought some of the geeks among us might appreciate this:

Sung to the tune of "The Beverly Hillbillies"

Come and listen to the story 'bout a man named Jed, Poor college kid, barely kept his family fed. But then one day he was talking to a recruiter, He said "They'll pay ya big bucks if ya work on a computer". Coding that is . . . CRT's . . . Microstation

Well, the first thing ya know ol Jed's an Engineer, the kinfolk said, "Jed move away from here," They said "Dallas, Texas, is the place ya oughta be," So he drove until he felt the heat and humidity, Summer that is . . . no shade . . . even your toenails sweat

On the first day at work they stuck him in a cube, Fed him a donut and sat him at a tube, They said "Your project's late but we know just what to do, Instead of 40 hours, we'll work you fifty-two!" Overtime that is . . . Unpaid . . . Mandatory

The weeks rolled by and things were looking bad, Some schedules got slipped and the boss was gettin mad, They called another meeting and decided on a fix, The answer was simple, "We'll work him fifty-six." Tired that is . . . Stressed out . . . No social life

Months turned into years and his hair was turning gray, Jed worked hard while his life slipped away, Waiting to retire when he turned sixty-four, Instead he got called in and escorted out the door! Laid-off . . . Downsized . . . Unemployed

Ya'll come back as a contractor now, Ya hear?

Sounds like Intergraph. They did exactly that to me.

You worked for Integraph? They sell hardware? I was disappointed when we bought a high powered NT server from them ... best power for the bucks, at the time ... but it brought us weeks of agony when the damn thing went down hard once in production for one month .. took for bloody ever to resolve. We had two such failures inside the first year. When I left that company we had relagated it to the Development team, as part of their arsenal.

Bert and Liam, for most of my life I thought music was the most insecure profession in the universe. In the last ten years virtually all (not some) of my friends in "secure" jobs have had incredibly rough times. Downsized, laid off, nervous breakdowns, stress disability, general feeling of betrayal etc. At least in music you KNOW next year will probably suck!

chuckle

Rick, it's true about the security (or thereof) in the computer industry, and it was tough to go from the top of the world to outof work all in the same year ... but after being through it a few times now, I actually prefer the insecurity! I look forward to the next job falling off so I can have more free time for a while!

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment!
