Tune Req: chieftains 4

Can anyone name the 2nd tune on the 5th track "Battle of Aughrim" on Chieftains 4? It's quite upbeat and is sandwiched in between the slower tunes. I heard it years ago but can't remember the title.

it starts at 1.59

The March to the Battle" title given there seems rather generic. I think the tune may have an older name.

Regards

In "the Fiddler's Fake Book,' that huge and widespread compendium, that tune is called 'The Battle of Aughrim.'

We don't play it the way the Chieftains do. We play it somewhat slower, and our guitarist adds a deep, threatening thrumming which makes you realize the song is about war.

It's a good tune for a new player because A part goes up and down the scale.

I thought the name in the book would have been a giveaway!

Murkier and murkier...

I found another site where 'The Battle of Aughrim' is a tune with 16th notes. It may be the first tune of the Chieftain's set. As I'm sure most of us know, an old tune can have a number of names.

Alex, are you asking about the tune because you want to play it? If so, I can post a MIDI file. Let me know.

Yes, there is a polka/march called the Battle of Aughrim. The tune under discussion seems to have acquired that name by Paddy Molony's use of it in the set piece of that name on the album.

I made a post earlier, which has now gone, for whatever reason.

So again:

I have seen written versions of the Battle of Aughrim in both 2/4 and 4/4. It's not particularly unusual to find marches with either time signature.

Equally The Return from Fingal can appear in different formats and keys, compare for example the version printed by Petrie and the one played by Séamus Ennis.

Just to clarify, The Battle of Aughrim is the march the Chieftains use to finish their piece. It had that name well before they used it for their recording.
