We don't play it the way the Chieftains do. We play it somewhat slower, and our guitarist adds a deep, threatening thrumming which makes you realize the song is about war. It's a good tune for a new player because A part goes up and down the scale. |

It may be the first tune of the Chieftain's set. As I'm sure most of us know, an old tune can have a number of names. Alex, are you asking about the tune because you want to play it? So again: I have seen written versions of the Battle of Aughrim in both 2/4 and 4/4. It's not particularly unusual to find marches with either time signature. Equally The Return from Fingal can appear in different formats and keys, compare for example the version printed by Petrie and the one played by Séamus Ennis. |
