Sarah Morgan (2013 illness) [Update 8 Sep]

21 Aug 13 - 12:36 PM (#3551424)
Subject: Sarah Morgan (illness)
From: George Papavgeris

I have just seen the following from Moira Craig via Judith Snelling:
=========
Sarah was in hospital last week and has had some scans which unfortunately have shown that she has cancer lesions on her liver. These are likely to be metastesis and the hospital want to do more tests to try to find where the primary cancer is. Not good news I'm afraid but she made it up to Whitby for a few days and went home Monday evening. She was delighted to make it.

She wants people to know so they can be straight with her. No shilly shallying (you know what she's like) so please pass the message on to anyone you meet that she knows.
=========

Very best wishes to Sarah.

I was saddened by the news - I was looking forward to meeting her again (as I always managed to at Whitby) at the Graeme Miles Comemorative concert but unfortunately it wasn't to be. My thoughts are with her and I'm keeping fingers crossed for a good outcome.

Sad to hear this. I never had the pleasure of meeting Sarah but I have corresponded with her about Cicely Fox Smith. Sarah was the one that adapted "Homeward" (aka "Home Boys Home") for singing. It's probably the most recorded C. Fox Smith poem.

I wish her well.

Following a phone call from Moira Craig , Mrs Admiral (Pearl O'Neill)
told us its inoperable and terminal , but Sarah is 'carrying on' as normal , and would appreciate any messages from friends .
I think its bloody sad !

My thoughts and prayers for Sarah. I attended a CMR singing workshop at Whitby a few years back, it was delightful. Something I will always remember.

Dear Sarah,
I've known you since the 1970s... happy memories of The Handsome Mouldiwarp Festival! You came to Llantrisant FC as part of the Craig:Morgan:Robson trio, and marvelled at the absolutely stunning harmonies. Keep your pecker up, luv!

Like you, Mick, we've known Sarah for a long time. Sarah, I still remember when we first met, sitting on a bench in the sun at Bracknell festival. Anne and I had not long been together so it must have been at least 35 years ago. Doesn't time fly! Anne and I are a bit knocked sideways by the news, but as Mick says, keep your pecker up!

Sang 'Keep you in Peace' at Bobbing, there were lots of Folk Friends thee who were feeling shocked that this has happened to Sarah. Candle lit!

Oh no, not another.
Such an inspiration, I always try to hear CMR at Whitby even if the harmony workshop is at a time of day with 4 other 'must do' clashes. First heard her and sang in her workshop when it was Bread and Roses.

Even back then "Home Boys Home" had me hiding a tear.

just want to point out I didn't actually say it was "inoperable and terminal" Sarah's still waiting for for more tests and consultations. It's still not great news but who knows. I'm just listening to the Whitby Choir recording that Malc did in the Brunswick centre, it sounds fantastic and it'll be put on "drop box" or some such access site so everyone can hear it.
Lots of love

Despite everything she and CMR managed to give a cracking performance at Whitby Rifle Club last week despite a malfunctioning PA and appalling lighting. I'd like to think this is a good augury and she will fight her way through this as well. Love and best wishes.

Subject: BS: update message from Sarah Morgan
From: GUEST,flyingcat(moira)

Dear friends, first of all, very heartfelt thanks for all your help. Could you please let other friends of mine (who aren't in this loop) know what the situation / prognosis is? I know they all want to help and also have demanding work and families. In general emails are best as I can read and reply when I am feeling lucid, I'm not always up for phone calls.

The other thing is that people's expectations can be hard to bear. I know everyone means well when they say things like "we can beat this together" or " keep positive and you can fight it" and that puts a huge weight on my shoulders as it is part of my nature to fulfil obligations and not let people down. There is also a line in a song which means much to me about being "wise enough to know when to hold on, and strong enough to let go". I will try to make what choices I have, wise ones, and knowing I have your support will help immeasurably with that.

Thank you all so much. These few weeks have been a huge learning experience for me, and I am finding it hard to imagine what I could have done to have merited so much loving care, and of course it says much more about you, my lovelies, than it does about me!

Lots of love

Sarah

PS don't be alarmed at this very early time of writing. I'm not lying here being miserably wakeful, but quite cheerfully clear- headed, as I am just at the right point in between doses of woose- inducing painkillers!

Dear Sarah,
Thank you so much for telling us how friends can be most helpful. That is an honest and loving approach I especially appreciate, coming from someone I especially value.

Please know you are loved and admired, and many folks here will try their best to offer encouragement without added burdens, compassion without maudlin Lamentations, and voices raised in song to add to your voice. Please forgive us when we falter and fail...We'll keep trying.

Thank you for staying true to yourself.

It's the worst, when you're sick and you end up expending energy taking care of helpers.

I too remember the house concert in Maine. I'm a harmony freak, and you all were a special treat. Your concertina accompaniment was original and beautiful. Luckily for me, I came home with a couple of CDs. I was also pretty much in awe of just being in the presence of the person who made a song out of "Homeward", AKA "Home, Lads, Home".

Thanks Sara and Moira for letting us know.
Love

Dear Sarah, I think I speak for my friends here in Edinburgh and Lothians TMSA when I say that we wish you the least bad of everything, whatever the prognosis. We have such lovely memories of the Singers' Gathering in 2009 when you and Moira and Carolyn took our Muckle Sing., and many of your songs and arrangements are still being sung, notably "Keep You In Peace". My friend and I recently did ""We'll All Be Smiles Tonight" in a little local charity concert. Hope you can keep smiling in spite of it all. Trish
