Bobert's Rare Guitar For Sale...

Unbeknownst to the Mudcat community I own a guitar that was a prototype for one used in the Danny Glover movie, "The Honeydripper"...

Yup, a few years back I was doing more outdoor festivals and needed an electric geetar but I didn't want just any geetar so I hooked up with an old friend, Ted Crocker (Ted Crocker Guitars) and over a two of three month period we exchanged ideas and photo's of what I wanted...

Turns out that a lot of people were following the journey... On of them was Danny Glover who was looking for just the right geetar for an upcoming movie entitled "The Honeydripper"... After Ted finished my geetar he built two similar geetars for Danny Glover to be used in the movie...

Bottom line??? I don't play mine much these days and have settled into shorter sets in clubs and my geetar is for sale...

I don't do blue clickies but mine is called the "Back Porch" and was the first of the "rusty nail" series of geetars on which the "Honeydrippers" are very much part of... If you Google up "Ted Crocker Guitars" you won't have any trouble finding my geetar...

I am offering mine, along with a nice tweed case for $1000...

From http://tedcrocker.com/rustynail.html
" The Back Porch'r is a custom Rusty Nail created for Sidewalk Bob Harrison. Bobert wanted a five string model with a single volume control. The body is mahogany and purpleheart, with purpleheart covers and tulipwood knob. "

Blue Clicky for you, Bobert. My, that's a purty guitar!

Purpleheart is a beautiful wood which explains why the Bobert special is so purty!

Over the years I've admired purpleheart items at woodworker exhibitions, & have severalpurpleheart bobbins from my lace-making days.

Unusual and nice looking. Is it a 5-string because of Keith Richards? How do you tune it?

I have no idea about the quality of Bobert's guitar, but I can tell you about Purpleheart.... which *I* will not work with any more. Do not let my words distract you from considering this guitar, as it is obviously an interesting and rare item.

First, purpleheart (one word) is a hard, splintery wood that is difficult to cut and shape, as it tears out easily and requires care and very sharp tools. You do NOT want to get those splinters in your skin... they are nasty.

Second, although it is a pretty color when new (that picture was likely taken when the guitar was first built), the wood does NOT stay purple very long. It reacts to both light and air in complex ways. Over a couple of years it turns a muddy brown, and although it 'can' be re-sanded to recover the color, who has the time? (BTW..Padauk wood also fades over time)
Take a look at the many images this expert has assembled.

and http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/purpleheart/exposed/index.htm

As the text on that site shows, many people have spent many hours trying to inhibit, reverse and stop the 'browning out'... with very limited success. (read the sad stories here)

Interesting story about your guitar and its followers, Bob. Good luck selling it!

It's 5 strings because I was looking for an old timey juke-joint look... I tune it in various open tunings...

Why not make one out of an old drainboard with formica top? Inset the pickup in a small rectangular tray and use a small faucet handle for volume control.

Keith plays his five string in Spanish or open G as taught him by Ry Cooder just missing the 6th string .. So DGDGBD drop the low D for GDGBD ..

I've played my "Back Porcher" in at least a dozen tunings... Some just for one song or another... Always fiddling...

On a radio programme with Martin Simpson, Keef described his own guitar playing as "five strings, three chords, one arsehole"!

Most of us who can't afford a dedicated open G guitar tune DGDGBD for open G tunes and rarely use the low D string, although it does come in handy for octaves, sliding the 4th and 6th strings to the 5th fret.
Lap style players in open G often tune GBDGBD, which is also a useful tuning, used by most square neck Dobro players.

Very cool idea! Then get Shane McBride to autograph it. Sell it for big bucks on Ebay. Seeing as yours does not have the Shane McBride seal of approval, Bobert, I'd hesitate before paying $1,000 for it.
