We wish them all the best and look forward to rebooking Damien and Mike in future. This is happening instead: Harvest Supper, Lewes Saturday Folk Club Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2DJ Saturday 14 September 8.00 - 11.00 PM Bring songs, tunes & tales for harvest time. We'll be serving home-made harvest loaves, English cheeses and apples. This is always a night with a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone is welcome, especially if you'd like to sing or play. We mostly sing and play traditional music from the British Isles, but we enjoy other styles as well. We always start off with some English dance tunes for anyone with an instrument to join in. Admission is £4 this evening. We have a loyalty card. Six visits earn you £5 off an evening when admission is £5 or more. Valmai (Lewes) |

I would have called him The Green Man, except he ain't green! Does he have a traditional name? (And who is it in real life? Snail, I'm looking at yooooooou...) It's a lovely pic. Michael is from very near the area in Ingrave Essex where Vaughan Williams first collected Bushes & Briars, and I like to envision "Shepherd Pottipher" as being another Shepherd Oak. (BTW, there's a gorgeous 16th-century pub close by, which still has its rural feel, as well as great food: The Old Dog at Herongate Tye, if you're ever passing and feel in need of acquiring a multiplying eye.) Still on the subject of food, the cheeses I usually get for our harvest supper are Old Sussex, Lord of the Hundreds, and Stilton. The first two are made in Sussex. They are all thoroughly delicious. No-one sang the song I was thinking of, but it would still be suitable for the Harvest Suppper: 'Oh, what a beauty! I've never seen one as big as that before! Oh, what a beauty! It must be two foot long or even more! It's such a lovely colour, so big and round and fat! I never thought a marrow could grow as big as that! Oh, what a beauty! I've never seen one as big as that before!' and the marrow is still in place .... A harvest loaf from 2011. The more elaborate ones you see in bakers' windows are made with a heavily-salted dough so that they don't go bad, but they aren't edible.
