A Harvest Supper replaces Damien Barber & Mike Wilson, 14 Sept, Lewes Saturday Folk Club

At very short notice Mike Wilson has had to join his brothers supporting Sting to promote his new CD on which they feature, The Last Ship . We wish them all the best and look forward to rebooking Damien and Mike in future. This is happening instead:

Harvest Supper, Lewes Saturday Folk Club

Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2DJ
Saturday 14 September 8.00 - 11.00 PM

Bring songs, tunes & tales for harvest time. We'll be serving home-made harvest loaves, English cheeses and apples. This is always a night with a wonderful atmosphere.

Everyone is welcome, especially if you'd like to sing or play. We mostly sing and play traditional music from the British Isles, but we enjoy other styles as well. We always start off with some English dance tunes for anyone with an instrument to join in. Admission is £4 this evening.

We have a loyalty card. Six visits earn you £5 off an evening when admission is £5 or more.

I would LOVE to be able to get to it, but the water is wiiiiiiiide...

Can someone please sing Bushes And Briars for me? I have associated that song with harvest suppers ever since Bathsheba Everdene (a.k.a. Julie Christie) (OK, I know, Isla Cameron) sang it in Far From The Madding Crowd.

Interesting, Bonnie - I was doing the music for an am dram version of "Madding Crowd" a few months ago, and the song in the script - which I think is also in the book - was "The Banks Of Allan Water".

And - back from thread drift - I hope your Harvest Supper goes well, Valmai. As ever, I'm doing yet another Saturday wedding gig so can't be there...

Valmai, can you post a link to that great photo of you offering loaves to - who is that figure? I would have called him The Green Man, except he ain't green! Does he have a traditional name? (And who is it in real life? Snail, I'm looking at yooooooou...) It's a lovely pic.

Michael is from very near the area in Ingrave Essex where Vaughan Williams first collected Bushes & Briars, and I like to envision "Shepherd Pottipher" as being another Shepherd Oak. (BTW, there's a gorgeous 16th-century pub close by, which still has its rural feel, as well as great food: The Old Dog at Herongate Tye, if you're ever passing and feel in need of acquiring a multiplying eye.)

PS: Hugs to Sandra -

Bonnie, I'll try. He is John Barleycorn and is attached to Eastbourne Lammas Festival The man wearing him is Derek Legg, a storyteller from Eastbourne.

This might work as a link to the picture, which was taken by our visiting Norwegian friend Henrik Wigestrand a couple of years ago.

John Barleycorn, Harveys beer, harvest loaf, Valmai

We'll gladly sing Bushes and Briars for you.

Thanks for the tip about the pub at Herongate Tye.

Still on the subject of food, the cheeses I usually get for our harvest supper are Old Sussex, Lord of the Hundreds, and Stilton. The first two are made in Sussex. They are all thoroughly delicious. Here's a picture of the table last time (a pity about the Sainsburys wrapper on the butter).

Lovely - it's amazing how visually beautiful food can be. All that's lacking now is your wonderful Olde Englishe traditional-harvest banoffee pie...

(John Barleycorn & Chiquita Banana would make quite a fetching pair)

Apple pie would do just fine, goes well with a bit of cheese.. Or plum, or blackberry and apple crumble. Makes for more washing up tho. Wish we could be there too, not that you know us from Adam but it sounds like a really good night.

It will be lovely, last year's one was. Hoping TDL can get along to it. Mr Leopard is singing again, but not at his normal volume due to the throat infection that is still hanging around.

Unfortunately I can't resist adding a picture of this alarming vegetable which has recently appeared growing through a fence in the road I live in, just round the corner from the pub where the folk club meets. It will be even harder to resist kidnapping it for the harvest night as it would also come in handy for the Music Hall night we are presenting this Saturday, 7th. September.

All together, now ......

The Music Hall night was a very large-scale hoot. No-one sang the song I was thinking of, but it would still be suitable for the Harvest Suppper:

'Oh, what a beauty! I've never seen one as big as that before!
Oh, what a beauty! It must be two foot long or even more!
It's such a lovely colour, so big and round and fat!
I never thought a marrow could grow as big as that!
Oh, what a beauty! I've never seen one as big as that before!'

and the marrow is still in place ....

A harvest loaf from 2011. The more elaborate ones you see in bakers' windows are made with a heavily-salted dough so that they don't go bad, but they aren't edible. This is made with a proper stoneground dough and is very edible even if it looks like a troll's foot. (Picture by Bryan TheSnail Creer.)

I'm delighted to say that John Barleycorn has graciously agreed to join us again this year.
