According to their web site it was est up in the sixties by a group of mates who wanted to do the folkie thing and not spend a fortune. Someone must be making a fortune! |

It is very low-key and the camp does have some maintenance issues that I keep trying to get addressed. But we have fun and good food and sometimes some outstanding music..sometimes more modest... And I will, unlike many other camps, which I don't understand unless the camp owners insist on it, prorate as much as I can, and give as many free or reduced rates as I can. I do have the advantage of the camp itself not being too expensive, but people have to drive a long ways to get here..3 hours or so often..we don't attract many locals for some reason. We also do our own cooking, but I do have paid help setting up and final cleaning..depending on final cleaning by volunteers I think is just adding a huge burden to the organizers and to the attendees who often want to hit the road. Of course, many camps have people do the cleaning who are on reduced rates, but then there are still transportation issues etc. I do think some camps are too expensive..I know some are very expensive to rent. But some could bring in more money by having day guests, people able to purchase only one night, people who need to bring in their own food and get a discount. |

With a weekly attendance of say 110 people that's an income of £26,400 where the clients are providing their own accommodation! They must be really good.Or the food must be to die for! |

It's a non-profit-making organisation staffed largely by volunteers. Their accounts are available to all the members. The holiday includes full board adn all the kitchen facilities associated with that, a campsite, the use of toilets and other facilites such as hall or marquee, and a full programme of daily activities. Admittedly your participation is required to make all these things happen, but those who go to Folk Camps generally enjoy contributing to the musical activities and to the running of the camp. The price you quote is for an adult who is paying at the last minute. Most people get a reduction by booking earlier. There are also reduced rates for children, and no charge for under-5s, which means your total figure is incorrect, as it's mainly aimed at families with children and teenagers. A family with three children (say, 4, 9 and 14) would pay £620 for the whole week, and would need little or nothing in the way of extra spending money. That's a pretty good deal for a holiday in August. There are also self-catering weekend camps. When our children were in their teens, we had some wonderful holidays with Folk Camps. The kids could choose their own activities and spend their time in a gang with others of the same age, but we'd all meet up at mealtimes and for the evening's dancing and singing. If you don't like the sound of that, then stay away, you'd be better going to a festival, but for lively family holidays in a safe camp environment, Folk Camps are hard to beat. Marje |
