Anyway, I can save 50/month by tapping into my landlord's wireless, with his approval..I could probably hook up a very old laptop I am using wired, but I also want something mobile etc., especially as I hope to go to Ireland this fall. Last year a co-worker of mine was taking a large loop train trip from Texas to LA to Seattle to Chicago and back - and was thinking about taking a laptop. But then she spotted the tablet that her granddaughters play with. It is wireless and has a lot of software, but is tough because it is meant for children and apparently not that expensive. You might want to see what is out there in the toy department. She took the child's toy and it worked just fine and didn't actually look that childish. :) SRS |

Verion 2 has just been released which means last year's version 1 is now being very nicely discounted. Also version 1 is tried and tested and proven extremely reliable. Best to get the 32gig rather than the 16 gig option if choice is available. The Archos is frankly nowhere near as good in any regard. I state that as an objective owner of both. |

The Archos Android tablet is very good, but heavier than the Nexus or the tablets I have (Coby Kyros 7 inch and Hipstreet 7 inch devices) The Archos is a metal body and has a neat leg that allows it to stand up without having to hold it or by some accessory to hold it. The Coby and Hipstreet ones were purchased at just under $100 here in Canada and I feel compares well to the Nexus. So the Archos was about 50% more if I remember correctly. NExus here in Canada, seem about $199 and sales bring it slightly lower. I saw recently Samsung and Asus have 7 inch tablets on sale in Best Buy/Future Shop for $170 Cdn. Samsung also have 8 and 10.1 devices for a bit more. Lots of choice for sure |

14 Sep 13 - 04:06 PM (#3558928) Subject: RE: Tech: Tablet or blackberry or what From: GUEST,mg i went ahead and bought a blackberry tablet 64 gb. i will probably learn how to use about 2 gb but one reason i bought it is that i am so behind on technology and this might help. it supposedly has fairly good camera features and i do want to photograph graves and also genealogy papers so i hope it works for that. it may or may not skype but has a similar feature but i don'tknow how others connect. what i would love at some wired camp is for someone to lead a workshop on various electronic devices...i think my 4 year old great nephew is probably ahead of me in this. thanks for input. |

The link is from a newsletter I signed up for several years ago when they offered news about computers. Like several others, they now offer "information" only on the latest toys, and the editors have gotten too lazy to write their own stuff so they mostly just pass on the ads that the sellers send them; but anyone interested who doesn't get a satisfying amount of junk email can probably hook up to a couple of similar ones. My former favorites were generally Ziff Davis (mostly US Based) and/or PC Advisor (more of a Euro view). Sign up for one and the rest of 'em will find you. John |

There might of course be friendly people who might let you use theirs. |

A laptop will let you use a dongle and a locally purchased payg sim but is a lot heavier to carry. I don't know what the situation is regarding mobile connections near the border where you can't be sure which country the nearest mast is in, you will need local advice for that. |

We bought ours in 2006, so it's a real heavyweight compared with modern tablets. It just fits inside my small rucsack, but is a pain to remove every time at airport security. I daresay that the built in wifi adapter is nowhere near as fast as those in modern equipment! |
