Where to hear folk/chanteys in Sweden?

Hello!

My husband and I just moved from San Francisco, home of a phenomenal monthly Sea Chanty singing group, to Göteborg Sweden... and my god we miss the music.

Does anyone know if there are any good folk singing groups in the Göteborg area? We would also welcome any suggestions for good places to simply listen to any/all kinds of general folk music in the Göteborg area.

Thank you all in advance!

KT

I can't really help much, but I am American and I just visited Göteborg a couple months ago (for one whole day :0 ) I was running around looking for maritime stuff. One observation is that in Sweden people don't tend to think of "chanteys" as such. The category of "Sailors' Song" (sjömansvisor) includes mainly non-work songs, and a lot of material that is more *about* the sea (e.g. sung by women on shore) rather than *of* the sailors. Another observation is that singing these seems it is more the activity of clubs, as there is less general (public) interest in singing such "old man" fuddy duddy songs.

I could surely have the wrong impression. I have learned about a dozen sailor songs in Swedish, but have no sustained experience with Sweden — just the replies I got from friends there when discussing chanteys, and my own little attempts to find some "action."

Is there a maritime museum near you? Maybe someone there could help you find something.

How nice to find another Mudcatter in Sweden! I lived in Göteborg for a few years, but moved north 30 years ago, so I don't know much about the music scene today.
However, on Oct.11th, there will be music, art & theatre events all over the city. You can google "kulturnatta göteborg" for information. Don't know if there will be chantey singing, but you will have great fun and maybe meet people who can tell you more.
And yes, there is a maritime museum - called Sjöfartsmuseet.
As for ballads of the sea and sailors, Evert Taube (1890-1976) is still considered the master. He is on Wikipedia and Youtube, and any public library in Sweden will have his songbooks. Like Pete Seeger, he became a legend in his own lifetime, and continued performing in his old age, although his voice was gone. If you can find his memoir, "I come from a raging sea", it's well worth reading.
