And, to paraphrase a film star whose name escapes me -

Is the T silent, as in Harlowe?

LTS - nothing personal, just a good opportunity I couldn't resist....

That's funny. Hey, the computer changed all my posts! I was Margarita! Funny you should ask, Easy Rider! It's wierd, all the posts I had made as Margarita have been changed to Margo. I guess it's automatic when you change your name....

Liz the squeak....yes, the T is silent. :o) But how did you come up with your monniker? When I was a kid my sister and I were clowns in a neighborhood circus. My sister was "Pip" and I was "Squeak". She'd poke my belly and I'd squeak. (The beginning of my singing career?)

Liz got her nickname "the Squeak" for her laugh which is so laden with ultrasonics that it shatters lightbulbs, is not permitted on aircraft, and is a prime cause of deafness in the East London bat population, it causes dogs major discomfort and brings Les Barker out in cold sweats. Once heard never forgotten.BTW the Leadbetter reference above, do/did you get "The Good Life"? the very Humourless (but brilliant comic creation by Penelope Keith ) next door neighbour was called Margo Leadbetter.

I got my name back as well. I did a lot of housekeeping on my computer today and deleted thousands of unwanted files including 100s of cookies. I thought I'd been careful and left the Mudcat ones on but I had no name when I came here earlier. Back to normal now.

Liz, I'm not sure if I've got this right but I belive the tale was that Harlow sounded the T When speaking to Margot Fontaine and the response was something like "no dear, the T is silent as in Harlow".

That's the one, - I have swiss cheese memory, things just pop up like poo in a sewerpipe whenever they want, and are usually as interesting (except to my friend Penny who has to look at poo for her ....ahem.... job...)and the 'P' is silent as in bath.....

Micca is, regrettably, correct in his description. I can be heard on the Les Barker CD or cassette, 'A Cardi and Bloke', where I am variously credited as 'The East London Society for Funny Laughs' or 'Audience completely accidental'. Nice to know how well loved you are.....

"Pedant Alert" It was actually Margot Asquith the wife of the one time Liberal Prime Minister Herbert Asquith, who had this exchange with Jean Harlow. She was also the person of whose Autobiography Dorothy Parker reviewed wit "The love story between Margot Asquith and herself will go down as one of the prettiest in literature"

Oh picky bloody picky..... Could have been Margot Durrell for all I care, it was a good try with a good quote and no need for pedantic badgers who have to play Father Christmas this year to pick on me, I'm only a feeble girl and a natural blonde, and I'm going to take my bat and ball and go home and not play with you nasty big boys any more......

Liz the Squeak - a "natural" blonde, really? I wasn't sure there was such a thing any more. Does your hairdress know? Ouch! (SFS = simulated face slap) I never intended to go there - honest! *BG*

Haven't been to a hair dresser for 21 years, the last (and first) time I went, I wanted a light, loose wavy perm (it was the 70's) and I came out looking like the proverbial poodle, so never went again. Besides, I really really hate people playing with my hair. Feet, fine, hair, forget it!!

Liz, I hope one day to hear you squeak! Like poo in a sewer pipe? Did you put that one in the similie thread? That's hilarious! I have a friend who would have said "Like a matzo ball in the soup". They bubble up and down.....

The name Margo Leadbetter sounds familiar to me... was that a tv program? My name is actually Margaret, but Margo is what every one has called me for years. It was kind of fun being Margarita for a while, but Margo fits me better, like an old glove. My husband has morphed my name from Margaret to MargieRat to Ratski. He's the only one to come up with that one.

Just Margo

Apparently, "The Good Life" was retitled "Good Neighbors" when it was shown in the US. Here is a link with some info on the series http://www.phill.co.uk/comedy/goodlife/

PS Micca, thanks for the correction to my previous post.

Jon, "It is the mark of a Gentleman to misquote" In part I'm being pedantic as a sort of memorial to a friend, Mike Mullin, who died at the end of July and who was a repository of the most abstruse and arcane knowledge and one of the best field botanists you could ever meet. He was also one of the most pedantic, irritating people in the world, he could pedant for Britain. and we miss him a lot. You know the kind of person that when you come across one of lifes little strangeness you find yourself saving to tell them later.and then you realise they are gone beyond your reach but not your thoughts.

Hey Mudjack "mostly" folk? what you do when you don't "folk" can make you go blind, you know. In the Baden-Powell book for scouts published in the 1920s called (I kid you not) "Scouting for boys" it is refferred to as "beastliness" now there's a euphemism for you.

Ah yes, beastliness is a good one. I know someone who based half a set at a concert on that particular chapter. It was revised in the 50's and 60's and that chapter was missed out, or renamed, so a lot of folk missed out on it...

Never had a corresponding chapter in my Brownie books though.....

Micca, I've never seen "pedant" used as a verb. Yes, I've seen that TV show, and thought it was funny. It was particularly funny because my sister and I did live on a mini farm for a while trying our best to be "self sufficient". I laugh about it now. Lots of stories to tell about being wet behind the ears and diving headfirst into rural living.

I saw the true color of the meanings of old expressions like "eating like a pig" or "stubborn as an old goat". Expressions not to be used or taken lightly!

Margo, have you ever read Betty McDonalds book "The Egg and I" the basic plot was filmed and introduced Ma and Pa Kettle.I found it very funny when I was about 15, don't know how it would hold up now.

Margo, in answer to all your previous posts coming up with your new name, looking at the HTML, as far as I can meke out, we all have Member ID's numbers. I presume that is what is stored and that the actual pages that we see are created from a database. If that is the case all that happens is that you ID number is translated to the corresponding nickname.

The title "The Egg and I" is familiar to me, but I know I never read it. I loved Ma and Pa Kettle when I was a kid. I loved the way he'd turn the radio on and off by throwing himself into his chair and making the table jump...

There is a book I read called "First Person Rural". I'm sorry I can't remember the author's name. But it was written by a fellow about his experiences when he moved from city life to a mini farm. This all takes place in New England somewhere, I think maybe Maine. Anyway, he has a chapter about Maple Syrup, and one about chainsaws. Very, very funny. It's an easy read (my style).

My stories are similar. Very funny because I actually did them. It's kind of embarassing to relate them because I am admitting to being really stupid!!! But then, I was an arogant 21 year old, and when you're 21 you know everything, right?

I suppose I ought to write them down. Who knows, maybe I could get them published before I ever become a "famous" musician! Now that I think about it, that may be a real possibility! Hahahaha

Margo, who perhaps ought to have remained hidden behind Margarita!

Margo, I plan on being at the song circle in Portland Monday evening. Mrs. MJ's mom had a heart attack Thursday night and we've been driving all weekend from our place to Yakima. She's fully recovered from the angioplasma (sp)and proceedures, she'll be coming home today. I need the break, maybe I'll see you there.

Mudjack, the original Boy Scout manual as written by Sir Robert Baden-Powell was called "Scouting for Boys" and contained a chapter on the evils of masturbation which he called "beastliness" The title of the book has been the subject of much innuendo in British (particularly radio) comedy for many years. I,(after many years searching) found a second-ahnd copy a few years ago, and the unconcious hilarity in this chapter is amazing. If you like I can try and scan it and send it to you as a private communication.

And as for 'gentlemen' and 'misquoting', believe me, Micca is NO gentleman - gentlemen don't smell like that for one, but they tend not to dribble so much either. Nor do they squeeze grapes between your toes....
