I clearly remember a version which had a delightful flute or piccolo part. I sure would like to find a MIDI, pdf or other file which shows that part. I can't even find anybody playing it on YouTube, but I remember it so clearly I could whistle parts of it for you. The hard part isn't the notes. Peter, that version is delightful. I love the beautiful a in 'banana' and the beautiful o in 'alone.' It does have a nice 'flute' part in the middle, but the flute is playing the melody with trills. My friends would get bored if I hogged the melody while they merely played boomchick. It's possible that what I remember is the (brace yourself) Norman Luboff version. At the moment I have just finished listening to about ten versions of Yellow Bird on YouTube, and I need to drink some water and walk around for a while. |

The flute part of the Luboff arrangement is what I remember with fondness. I have loved the sound of the flute for as long as I can remember. I have downloaded the melody from Wikifonia lead sheets, and I thought I could listen to the flute part and put it in, too, but it's beyond me. For one thing, it's so faint at times. At other times, I can't tell if the melody notes and the flute part start together or if there's a small rest. It's amazing how much difference a small rest makes once you hit Alt T B. Thanks, Crowhugger. I'll listen to the Whittaker version. Guest, I think I've already seen the arr. at scores.com, but I'll check again. Gollee! Every time we turn around, we hear about the greed of the music industry. Why can't somebody exhibit a little profit motive and offer to sell me that song with the flute part written in? |

If nothing else comes of this, I have enjoyed going to YouTube and listening to the flute part in the Norman Luboff arrangement. I have loved the sound of the flute (and the recorder and the oboe) since I was a little kid. The flute playing on 'Yellow Bird' is exceptionally fine. The graceful, effortless trills, the saucy endings, and the tantalizing descant during the verses. When I was a kid, listening for this song on the top-40 radio station, grown-ups were dumping ugly junk like Elvis, Little Richard, Chubby Checker and (later) the Beatles on me, whether I wanted it or not. Yellow Bird and the Blue Tango convinced me that somewhere, somehow, I could escape. |

I grew up just about exclusively with classical. But by about 12 or so I was delighted to discover top 40, with, at that time, Chubby Checker, Nat King Cole, Little Eva, Claude King, Didi Sharp. Bobby Vinton, Brian Hyland and a bunch more. Didn't desert classical. But got a charge from lots of other types of music too. |
