Hi All, I'm looking for any songs with great countermelodies. I do a couple of numbers with friends - Maggie (the Bing and Gary Crosby version) and Pasadena (Billy Murray and Ed Smalle version) which we sing as a three parter. Anyone know any from the folk rep? Cheers F

Back in the 60s, the Chad Mitchell Trio did Great Historical Bum together with I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago. Mostly, they alternated stanzas between the two songs, but for the grand finale they sang a verse of each as countermelodies. There have been some threads about these two songs here on mudcat.

Surely you're aware of PLAY A SIMPLE MELODY, written by Irving Berlin for the 1914 musical "Watch Your Step." It was also recorded by Bing and Gary Crosby in 1950. Lyrics are here.

That thread also contains YOU'RE JUST IN LOVE, also written by Irving Berlin, and performed by Ethel Merman and Russell Nype in "Call Me Madam" in 1950. Lyrics are here.

There's also BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE, by Frank Loesser—but audiences today often feel that the lyrics sound a little too "rapey." Anyway, there is a set of lyrics here.

In the gospel/bluegrass realm, there's DANIEL PRAYED. I know it from the Red Clay Ramblers. There are lyrics here but unfortunately that transcription doesn't convey the contrapuntal nature of the chorus.

Those are all that come to mind right now
