Lyr Req: S'Beag S'Mhor / Sheebeg Sheemore

Subject: S'Beag S'Mhor

I am searching for the lyrics to the traditional song "S'Beag S'Mhor" (or Sheebeg Sheemore as it is sometimes spelled) - in Gaelic or preferably English. Can anybody help? Thanks! -Victoria Harris

I seem to remember having heard some; unfortunately they were all written quite recently, and were very bad. It's a nice tune (not a song, and it's probably wisest to leave it that way!

All the best

Sufferring from Bert's Syndrome wasn't there a thread about this a while back and someone DID come up with lyrics? I seem to recall commenting I had never heard it as anything but an instrumental.

You're right, MMario, someone did find the lyrics. I'm not vouching for the Irish, but this URL does include a translation (which I'm not vouching for either). However, here 'tis:

If we did, I can't locate it. And that's another good reason for using the Lyr.Req with the Song Title or keywords in the thread title. Anybody want to search ALL the threads titled "Searching for Lyrics" or "Lyrics Needed?"

Hi Victoria and welcome.....When you are asking the forum for help, its best to use the prefix that you need, such as "Lyr.Req." and either the song title or a keyword of some sort. If you don't get what you need with this thread, start another with as I suggested and you may have better luck!

Well, I'm astonished! Are those lyrics really attributable to Carolan? I'd be interested to know. There was a link to "history", but it didn't work.

There's some history at http://www.contemplator.com/carolan/sheebeg.html

By all accounts I've heard, Carolan did write the lyrics.

Sorry, I'm not into these blue clicky things, but by pure chance my junk EMail today included notification of the following. Perhaps it's of use.

In Donal O'Sullivan's 'Carolan' he took "Sheebeg and Sheemore" to be Carolan's revison of the "Cuckoo". He also gave an 8 live verse by Carolan to the tune. Elsewhere he notes, in effect, that Carolan was a great composer, a fair player of the harp, and a poor poet.

Sis. Did you look in the Forum? I believe that one was covered in the Forum a few months back. Do a search. Check in the Quick Links up above.

Neither of those URLs work for me, could someone please paste the lyrics in.

There is also a (modern) set of lyrics ( when you hear the wild goose calling, I'll be there) to Carolan's Planxty Irwin, which often follows si beg in a session.

I don't think so, the song I know containing A Trim Rigged Doxy is called The Rambling Sailor.
