Too much wasted time. Just a heads up in case you are looking for me there.

The time may have seemed a waste to you, but Facebook has gathered a mountain of information about you and your connections to others. That is a very worrisome site.

I got into Facebook because I thought it was a silly, frivolous thing. They way I used it at the time, it was. Since then, I've connected with people I have seen for 40 years. The sort of folks you always wonder "whatever happened to?" It has proven more useful than I ever would have thought it could be.

It hasn't done so for many people. I'll "see you around".

Some aspects of it are very sinister. Up to 4 minutes ago it was refusing to remove a live video of a beheading in Mexico - although it has for some time banned videos of breastfeeding if the nipple could be seen. It has now succumbed to pressure from responsible public and governments, but the very thought that the one was acceptable but the other not speaks volumes.

I don't think I'll miss the opportunity to watch a live beheading, tho I always like to see cute wimmen nekkid. Comes with being a dirty old man. I guess I'm a mismatch for Facebook, but there's just enough interesting on it to keep me hooked.

I have nothing against Facebook. I just found I was spending too much time on it. I'd rather read a book and email someone if I want to.

I like it to keep up with what friends are doing -- sort of like hollering into the conversation in the next room. And reading things I find interesting and passing them on. I've also gotten in touch with a lot of people I'd lost touch with over the years -- a student of Tom's from Kingsley Hall who is living in Thailand even found Tom through my presence at Facebook.

I get non-musical questions answered faster at Facebook than at Mudcat.

I find it a VERY effective method of communication -- easier than email to communicate with more than one person at a time.

But very often, especially in cases of Tom's medical adventures, I link the Mudcat thread to my Facebook feed -- then I can update friends who aren't Mudcatters.

Mary, I didn't really notice you actually USING FB except for games. You, like many at Facebook, aren't "there" consistently, so if I've needed to communicate with you it's not been through FB. Instead I'd email or call you (or send you a postcard or a carrier pigeon...smoke signals are less effective).

I'm not going to "miss" you at Facebook -- I never really considered you to be there.

I think Linn's comment was meant to be a matter-of-fact statement and nothing more. I've got games notifications blocked, and so saw even less of SINSULL. And there's no here here either, Greg, and I'm still reading your words somehow. Weird, ain't it?

SINS on FB is kind of like me on Google+.
I haven't quite keyed into the usefulness of it, and Twitter is a time-waster for me.

I'm not sure exactly what happened with me on Facebook that made it stop being about games & things like that, and being like a huge backyard fence, but it happened.

I used Facebook primarily to stay in touch with family. Spaw saw more of me than anyone else outside family. Again - this isn't a criticism of Facebook.
I literally spent hours every day and evening there just not with Mudcatters.
When I found myself reading about who had what for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I decided it was time to walk away.
Find me here or via email.
Sorry not to finish our games, Spaw, but let's face it I had you beat.

I use FB primarily to keep in touch with people and have "found" tons of old friends/classmates/cousins (sooo many cousins). I enjoy it and there is some very funny shit on FB that I like to pass on. The only game I play is Words with Friends (Spaw, I'll take you on lol)

But if I need you, Mary, I'll drive the 1.5 miles from my house to yours :-)

Hiya,

Heard of people w/ FB accounts who set their alarm to go off every 2hrs to see whether they've got any more friends! That put me off. I eventually caved in but this was & is a *lot easier to use*. If I haven't seen someone for 40+ yrs it shows you how much I felt the need to keep in touch.

I'll go for that Becca!

And just so we get it right there Sins........The two games you refer to:

Game 1 with 10 letters left to draw
Sins=338
Spaw=298
Sins leads by 40 points

Game 2 with 16 letters left to draw
Sins=242
Spaw=342
Spaw leads by 100 points

You will notice that we are splitting these two games which happens all too often....LOL.....AND you will also notice that the combined scores have me leading 640 to 580. Just wanted to clear that up. So just go ahead and read your book or whatever.........hhrrrruummmpphhhh.............

Hello, Spaw! I haven't seen any posts from you in a long time. I was getting worried about you, so it's good to hear from you.

About FB: I signed on once, was dismayed at the invasion of my privacy, and cancelled my account a few minutes later. What I mean is, I signed myself up, and Facebook immediately said, "Look, here are friends of yours that you can communicate with." And by golly, there were pictures and screen names of a few friends of mine.

The DH says that FB hacked my supposedly-protected e-mail Address Book to get those names. Brrr!

Subject: RE: BS: Cancelled My Facebook Account

What I meant is I never expected Sinsull to see anything I posted at Facebook or expected her to get messages there.

I communicate with her by email or phone so that I KNOW she'll get the message.

I find my life is richer with Facebook. But it IS truly easy to waste a couple hours doing basically nothing. But, then again, it's easy to do that with television, too. Unlike most people, I don't watch television. I haven't watched television for 30 years -- since the middle of "Brideshead Revisited" in 1983.

I joined myspace as a free website for publicising music and it worked well for a while. The myspace music sites were much friendlier to musicians than the Facebook sites, but non-musicians seemed to gravitate to Facebook and so I moved there too. I find that if I advertise a gig on Facebook, I'll have a full house, where running around sticking up posters was a pain and not even as effective.
One trouble with Facebook is that you can't really post tunes and expect them to stay there. They just scroll down outa sight.

Subject: RE: BS: Cancelled My Facebook Account

When people ask me (IRL) if they can 'friend' me, I usually say something like "Sure. But I post a lot of crap." Then it's up to them. You can adjust how much information you get from people, but you have to learn how to do it. If you just want to play games, get a Pogo account. It's $35 a year (I think) and they have chat rooms and personal messaging. You guys could waste a shitload more time there... which is probably NOT what SINSULL is looking for.

Spaw - now that I am not on Facebook I cannot verify your claims -snicker.

Linn, Forgive me but haven't you seen every episode of the Big Bang Theory? Surely that is TV, no?

There are a few 'Catters who keep in touch with me via Facebook. This is just a heads up that I am not there. I have let my family know as well. I joined Facebook when some family illnesses and "drama" made it the only way to stay in touch. That has fortunately passed. I did not mean this to be a criticism of Facebook and those who use it. I just choose not to.

Wot Jeri said. Every time. I have gained a lot more in the revival of old friendships, swapping of useful links & info, and heads-ups to interesting articles & books than I have lost in time. And there's nothing private on my page (or in the so-called 'hidden' bits) TO invade. All anyone will learn about me is the country I live in, my gender, and they will be able to infer that I like harps, folkie music, and puppies. Pretty much the stuff I'd put in a shop-window website, in fact.

Likewise, Bonnie.

What I like about Facebook is probably not what the organizers intended: for me, it works as a list of articles linked by friends whose reading tastes vary widely from mine. Through Facebook links, I read all kinds of fascinating stuff I would never find on my own.

Plus cat videos. Can't forget the cat videos.

I use Facebook but try not to let it become an addiction. That would cut into my other addictions - crochet and TV, both of which I can partake of together, unlike Facebook, which demands total attention.

Mary, I watched the first two seasons of "Big Bang Theory" (thanks to Tami) on DVD. Also three seasons of "White Collar", five seasons of "Boston Legal" and I don't know how many seasons it was of "Rosemary & Thyme" and "Keeping Up Appearances" -- all on DVD or videotape. We don't even have basic cable anymore (which we never watched). We had it because it was the only way we'd get discounted phone and cable internet from Comcast. But at some point, either because Tom asked for it to go away or because he told them he was going blind, we stopped having to have it.

I watch movies, too. But I don't watch scheduled broadcast or cable television. So I don't just sit there in front of the tube mindlessly viewing as a lot of people seem to do. I HAVE watched the Food Channel when we were stuck in a hotel room in Boston having to stick close to Mass General and I HAVE been in the same room as my mother when I was visiting and she "had" to watch "Everyone Loves Raymond"... Total of a handful of hours in over 30 years. That's not "watching" television...even though I use the television to watch films on DVD or videotape.

I like Facebook. I'm also at LinkedIn, but spend next to no time there unless there's a question on a group (I'm in a couple editing groups) I'm interested in. My profile hasn't been updated and I could care less if people endorse me or want to add me to their network. I signed up for Pinterest, but I don't see the point, and haven't been back. Some people like Facebook just to be able to complain about it.

We each have our preferred down time activity. I read more books in a week than a lot of people I know read in a year and carry at least one book with me wherever I go (in my purse, in the car). I read every morning to get into the day and every evening to get out of the day. In between, I check in at Facebook or Mudcat or read my two email accounts or check Tom's email accounts. Or I call people on the phone or go over and visit with them.

Facebook can be a huge time-waster, but it is a site I was actually asked to join many years ago to do with my work, back when facebook was limited to university participants. My library converted from using personal accounts to promote university stuff by creating a library page and I switched to posting my own nonsense there.

Twitter is wonderful: it's all in who you choose to follow. I have a lot of people who are writers and post links to their essays or who post links to other excellent articles. It's fast and efficient.

I block games on facebook, and for some friends whose politics I can't look at all day long, I block the sources of their most obnoxious posts, and try to keep a steady supply of neutral topics of interest to all of us. I do kind of the same thing Jeri does - if someone wants to friend me I warn them about my political leanings so there is no surprise.

Jacqui and Kendall are the only people I know who watch TV regularly. 60 Minutes is sacred time at the Morse household. Jacqui records what she wants and watches it when she can.
I got rid of cable TV years ago and Netflix because I just wasn't using them. Did the same with my unlimited phone plan - I was paying almost $100/ month and averaging nine minutes of phone time.
I don't know anyone who watches TV all the time. When I visited family this year in both NYC and Buffalo no one watched TV at all. The children watched Thomas the Train and that was it.
Even the guys at work watch only sports and occasional zombi shows.
I watch two shows every week when I can - The Cafe on PBS, a gentle comedy about people living in a seaside town in England. Quirky characters draw you in to their lives. And my other must watch is The Closer. I love how she hides her brilliant mind behind the white trashy exterior. "Thank Yewwwww. LOl
Facebook served its purpose for me during a family crisis. Playing games on line distracted my young cousin during a particularly rough patch. While in the hospital, her computer kept her in touch. Spaw and I connected over Scrabble. And yes he does beat me most of the time. Others rarely do which makes his games all the more fun.
The politics, both right and left wing, I find sad. Seems to me a replay of the nastiness in Washington. Somewhere there has to be some common ground. Obama isn't Satan and Boehner isn't pure evil. ah well.
Back to my laundry and house work. Happy Saturday!

FB is an amazing tool when used for certain things. Nevermind the fun stuff, which is fun (thanks for all the jac, Becca, others) and the fascinating stuff and music stuff (you know who you are). The anti screwing up the environment sites are a Dogsend!

We have an antenna on top of a bookshelf, so we only get a half dozen broadcast channels, and mostly nothing but reruns.

LiK is somewhat addicted to "Bones" which is the only reason I know that the Closer is still on a couple of hours later on the same channel as Bones reruns. Can't say what channel, since the broadcast channels never seem to show a network affiliation.

Also can't say that the Closer is one I particularly care for, since I know people she tries to characature with her phony imitation of an accent, although the show does display a variety of pathological personalities reasonably consistently and with fair accuracy. (I'm not referring to the criminals re. the loonies, incidentally.)

I enjoy following science pages that post things from various sites, news one may not read otherwise, etcetera. I am currently following a site which has the up to date news about anti-fracking efforts in nb.ca. Lots of things that never make it to our TV or radio. Pics, videos, news. This has garnered attention from far and wide with solidarity protests in about 70 NA cities... Ireland... France...

Such will never be in the newspapers or on the TV here as our media is controlled by government and corporations. So, FB does some a great service.

I sure enjoy using Facebook to share photos. It's put me in contact with a lot of old friends, and it provides an easy way for me to keep in contact with my family.
I've shut off most of the "apps," or whatever they call them, so I'm sorry that y'all can't give me a poke or a virtual beer, or whatever. That just got too bothersome.
But it's great for sharing ideas and photos.

I used FB in moderation; I friended only people actually known to me. For a while it was fun to keep up with them. But eventually I got tired of paging thru the cat pictures & links to political propaganda to find actual news about the people I cared about. I did not actually close my account, but I stopped scanning FB. I go to it if I get an email alert that looks interesting. Also, I let LiveJournal give notice of my postings there to FB.

Since Joe O mentioned using Facebook to share photos, it might be worth pointing out that the last(?) post in the Win8-1 thread links an article about "features" REMOVED in 8-1 that were present in Win8.

One thing mentioned was a "Facebook Photo" app. I don't know what that means, but those who might know perhaps will want to take a look.
