Tech: ABCexplorer on a disc

Is it possible to dowmload ABCexplorer onto a disc and use it from the disc?

I am reasonably sure you have to install it on the computer you want to run it on. Of course, you can transport the Setup file on a disk, thus you do not need an Internet connection on the target machine. Just run it there, and when you do not need that installation any longer, uninstall it.

Les, I think that Grishka is right.

I found a discussion on Portable abc applications at thesession.org, but a brief scan suggest that none of it sounds very practical...

What exactly is the problem that you're trying to solve? There may be easier solutions.

I have two problems currently:

One is I cannot update my old copy and the other is I have friends who cannot seem to get the programme onto their machines at all.

Clearly sharing via might have been an option

But thanks anyway

I'm pretty sure AbcExplorer relies on ghostscript and abcm2ps to generate the notation images, which will make it pretty damn difficult to make portable in the way you suggest. My understanding is that apps have to be pretty much designed from the ground up to be executable from detachable media, it's not something that can happen purely by chance or desire.

Grishka's solution is a good one; the only other thought I have is that many people have like me moved on from AbcExplorer to EasyAbc, which, although still needing an installation, has an even lighter footprint on the host machine and will uninstall completely if you don't want to leave it in place.

Thanks Steve, I think that pretty well clears up the CD option.

I still don't understand why I cannot update my old ABC? Is this my protection system being over zealous?

Les, if you need more advice on installing and updating ABCexplorer, you should specify what exactly you and your friends tried to do (Windows version ...), and what happened (error message ...).

Protection system: Windows does not allow any installation or update from user accounts that do not have admin rights - that is the very point of the latter.
