It is by far the easiest and most user friendly programme of its kind. That being the case Microsoft did away with it a few years back and so far I have managed to keep a system running on at least one of my various PCs. However I have been getting increasing frequent hangups with my last working programme on Windows XP. Anyone out there with any ideas has to how I can retain this really useful tool. Pleas don't waste your time offering alternatives. I've tried them all and they are mostly messy and in the end not what I want. |

Photo editing software From: JohnInKansas I'm using an obsolete version of PhotoShop Elements (Ver 2.0) that refused to run in Win7 because "the security certificate has expired." This is a very old version, but was the last one that actually did useful things before Adobe started "making the program more user friendly." (I have two later versions, (7.0 and 8.0) but they're useless for me.) The simple expedient that lets me continue with the good one was just to put an icon on the desktop and right click it to choose "Run As Administrator" whenever I need the program. No guarantee that it will work with your program, but it might be worth a try, assuming your old program is on your computer and just balks at running. John |

There is a DOS program called xxcopy .... or if you are familiar with DOS... or using a another program such as one of these http://lifehacker.com/5839753/the-best-disk-cloning-app-for-windows or this one recommended by a freeware group The idea is to get what you have now transferred to a stable computer. The- new drive or computer must be compatible... and you may need advice on that. (You say you do NOT want advice on other photo editors...so I will reluctantly refrain) (I am having similar issues with an old PC, but it was damaged in a crash so that it is 'usable', but can't do some things.) |

My first PC, a low end Dell, used the Picture It .mix format for photos. Back then I didn't know enough to realize formats mattered. Actually didn't know squat about formats or that they needed attention. All I knew was pic was saved and assumed that was all there was to it. When that 'puter was on the verge of dying and it's hard drive crashing I took it to a local shop and had them download the files onto a disk, only to find that when I attempted to upload the pics onto the new computer, it couldn't read the .mix format and I could not open the considerable number of excellent photos of my then magnificent garden and most of my child's first 10 years of life. Went searching and learned that Microsoft had not supported the .mix format very long, it was not available anywhere, and neither was Picture It. As we are all wont to do, I have occasionally searched again to see if something had become available. A year or so ago found a download for Picture It was again available, though I don't think it was through Microsoft. I downloaded it, but it still would not .mix files. Can the Picture It program (I agree it was a good program) open .mix files, and if so, where did you get it? |

(Express 2000) will certainly handle .mix files and they can then be saved as .jpg or whatever. That's if you can get hold of a copy! I am just about to try the link above - but not on this computer as it has my working copy on it. |

Microsoft still makes available a free Microsoft Digital Image Starter edition. It will batch convert .mix files to jpegs or png in a couple of easy steps. Works like a charm. Photo editing software From: JohnInKansas Adobe PhotoShop is also about $900 (US) for the photo program, and about the same for the "movie" adjunct. Adobe also is pushing a "no purchase/rent by the year" policy to assure that you'll keep paying every year as long as you use the program. PhotoShop Elements was introduced some time ago, for those who only wanted to do photo editing, and started off when introduced at about $30 (US), but has now "grown up" to about $90 (last time I looked, probably more for the latest?) per copy. When first introduced, many who had full Photoshop also had, and preferred, PhotoShop Elements for editing their camera outputs. They've largely ceased talking about it, so I assume they're less impressed, as I am, with the newer versions of Elements. Version 2 included about anything you'd want for photo editing, but without many of the other capabilities of the full Photoshop that allowed creating images; but later versions have incrementally removed quite a few of the most useful tools, to the point that versions 7 and 8, both of which I have, are useless for me, so I still use the "obsolete" ver 2. Back to the original subject: Assuming that you have a copy of the program you want to use, WinXP includes a choice to "run as" so that WinXP "pretends it's an earlier version to run a specific program that won't otherwise run well on WinXP." This was sometimes a way to carry an older program into WinXP with mostly complete usefulness. Vista claimed to have the same feature, but my experience with my very few attempts to use it in Vista indicated "less successful" carryover. Later windows versions generally recommend creating a "virtual machine" using the older OS, but the old OS must be installed before the new version is put on the machine, and you must tell the new OS during its installation to "keep the old stuff separate" for this to be very successful. Instructions don't look too complicated, but might be confusing for inexperienced people. This is a little different than a "dual boot" installation that lets you choose either/any of a couple of/or several Operating systems, to run them one at a time. Neither the virtual machine nor the multiple boot methods are particularly easy for less experienced users to manage, unless there's a critical need for which there's no other solution. John |

Photo editing software From: Barbara Shaw I also use Picture It and love it's ease of use, simplicity, etc. Can't remember, but I think I re-installed from the old disc when I got the new computer with Windows 7 (having upgraded from Win XP), and everything still works fine. Never had a problem with XP either, so I'm wondering if your problem is the OS. Maybe try a re-install? I do use Photoshop for more complex editing, but turn to Picture It for quick and easy edits. |
