Tech: Microsoft Windows is crap.

Er... Not just crap, but the worst piece of software that I have ever encountered. For some reason the powers that be at Microsoft seem to think that they know what I want to do, better that I do.

Well I will tell you Microsoft executives. What I want is for your F)(*&^ing software to work.

I don't want it to think that it needs to be upgraded. If you had the ability to write programs that worked in the first place, then you wouldn't need upgrades.

If you need to know how, then give me a call 719 two eight seven 7918.

Is there anything in particular you're looking for technical support on, or are you just venting? Because there's lots of knowledgeable people on here who might be willing to offer expertise and pointers on a wide range of software and hardware issues, but (if that's what you're after) you're going to have to be just a tiny bit more specific .

But I agree, the intermittent Intellisense bug in Visual Studio 2012 is a real pain.

I dunno, Garg. Usually we keep tech stuff up top, just because we do. Then again, we sometimes move tech stuff down below the line, when it seems more appropriate there. It's one of those "grey areas," ya know...
But in the grand scheme of things, it don't make no nevermind.

There is nothing "tech" about it.

Windows? Crap?

You're just figuring that out? Linux or Apple OS are better operating systems.

Actually, I have IT friends who are happy with Windows 8. The issue, though is that it should not be applied to every machine on the planet. It is meant for tablets and mobile devices.

These "crap" threads are a pain in the nevermind.

Best guess usage (Wikipedia- 80 % pirated in China, so figures inaccurate, but OK for Western World)

Windows 8- 7.43%
Windows 7- 39.27
Vista---- 2.91
XP ----- 25.08

Apple
OS X - 6.21 %
IOS - 10.92

Linux - 1.29 %

Android - 6.03 %

Other - 2.77 %

In other words, most of us use "crap" according to Bert.

Most of us get along just fine with "crap."

In the age of data communication, an OS is no longer just a piece of consumer software, but part of the worldwide infrastructure. The existing OSes are comparable to houses without locks. Android is among the worst in that respect.

We need completely new open-source OS and browser software with verifiable security. This kernel functionality, being verified, should never require an update. All the rest, bells and whistles, can be commercial and subject to competition.

Of course this is BS in the Mudcat sense, since for ordinary musical requirements, Windows is good enough.

WE have open source OS software. Trouble is it's not compatible with programs most folks use. IMO an operating system should be completely transparent---just a means of translating usable programs into something the computer can use.

Windows 7 seems to be a pretty good system, once you get used to its strange ways!

Because in many cases it's the easy way out- despite the constant headaches and bullshit.

MicroSpawnOfSatanSoft ain't about providing a useable OS, folks - its about making ungodly piles of money.

And the money comes mainly from upgrades. Most new copies of Windows, Office, etc are sold by Microsoft to OEMs at knockdown prices - once they've got you hooked, you are a continuing source of income.

Since I have been called forth to "speak."

I suggest you visit "The Gibson Research Corporation" if you, like me, have not dropped by his laboratory for a couple years.

Lots of good, free, edifying stuff.

Guest 3:29 ...There is nothing tech about it... You can say THAT again.

Q, there is an old saying that 90% of everything is crap and it is probably true.

Grishka ...for ordinary musical requirements, Windows is good enough...
Unfortunately I was trying to print out a song list for a Gig when Microsoft went into its update mode which I couldn't interrupt. I had to give up and leave without it. So NO it is not good enough for ordinary musical purposes.

I guess that one of the reasons that I am so picky about expecting things to work, is that I used to be a boilermaker, and I can assure you that if you mark out a piece of steel plate then you had better get it right; because steel doesn't come with an on-line debugger.

Also, when I studied computer science, we were told "If your program doesn't work, don't bother to turn it in because you have got an F" and "If your program brings down the system, (Which Microsoft just did to me) then don't bother to come back for the rest of the semester because you have failed the course"

So Greg F has it right. it has nothing to do with the product all it is, is conning the suckers into shelling out their money.

I've no doubt someone cal point straight to it, but I'm sure there's a control in there somewhere (possibly shown when you instal the system, or accept your first updates) with the options "instal updates automatically/never instal updates/ask me before installing updayes". Apart from non-urgent MS updates ,which install while my computer is shutting down, my system always flags that MS updates are due, with a notification along the lines of "There are important updates which need to be made. This requires a shut-down. Your machine will shut-down in 10 minutes" I can then access the message & (if necessary) change the time to shutdown so that I can continue working, or shut-down immediately to allow the updates.
Many of these updates relate not to minor bug fixes, but to security updates where new methods of attacking the computer network have been identified, and urgent action is required.

No problems with Win7 although the look and feel was sufficiently different from XP to be a bit irritating until I got used to it.

I avoided Vista, a friend had it and it was a total disaster area.

The latest "Patch Tuesday" bunch of updates was rather large, but as Nigel said, those are necessary because of the criminals who keep finding new ways to harm you.

Since a majority of users do use Windows, and where the people are is where the money is to be stolen, Microsoft gets more attacks than anyone else, but does usually respond promptly to the significant new threats. Apple is generally good at patching promptly, but often doesn't admit they've fixed you.

This latest Microsoft patch installed three patches yesterday and an additional dozen this morning on my main machine, and DID CAUSE A PROBLEM for me. When I logged in after the patches finished I had NO INTERNET CONNECTION on two of three computers. (She left hers running and getting into it is like digging in a woman's purse, so I don't go there if she's not available, and don't know if hers will need help.)

This most recent bunch of patches caused my AV not to start at the last reboot, so the AV firewall blocked everything. An update to the AV brought both of the two machines I've looked at back on line.

["She" woke up while I was typing, and her AV had updated itself 3 minutes ago so her machine is fine now too.]

The blame for needing patches should be placed on the CRIMINALS. Microsoft gets a pretty good grade for providing what's necessary to keep them out - most of the time, although it's a necessary inconvenience to the users sometimes.
