Depends on the browser your using - which is it?

Hold down the 'Ctrl' key and hit the '+/=' key until you get to the right size. (The '_/-' key makes it smaller)

As Greg said, it depends on which browser you're using, and might depend on whether you're using Windows, Apple, or 'Nix.

The Ctl+ key makes the whole page larger. Ctl- makes the whole page smaller.

That might be the actual problem, but what was asked was how to make the font (letter size) larger without changing the page zoom.

If, as indicated, it's only in the browser, the setting for font size is probably in a "tools" or "appearance" setting, but different browsers put it in different places. A "zoom" setting usually will appear on a toolbar somewhere so you can single-click it if the problem is really a tiny page rather than just tiny letters.

In my browser, font size changes when I hold the Ctrl key and spin the mouse wheel.

In my browser the page size changes when I hold the Ctl key and spin the mouse wheel. I suspect yours does the same.

That's not the same thing as changing the font size.

You can do the two things separately.

Pressing Ctrl while operating the mouse wheel is the standard operation for changing the page size, i.e. the size of all fonts and pictures on the current page and on any page subsequently opened.

Most browsers also have a setting (somewhere deep in the menu) to adjust the default font size, only effective for pages, such as normal Mudcat pages, that do not specify any font size themselves. Picture sizes will not be affected.

Both settings normally apply until changed once more.

Let me restate that for the differently retentive: in my browser, Ctrl + mouse wheel does what I'm pretty sure the original poster did and called "change the font to some tiny size;" a thing which he or she said happened while moving the mouse.

In common talk, ZOOM generally implies getting a bigger view.

If he went the other way, did he MOOZ accidentally?

Older browsers actually zoomed (zoom in/out), whereas nowadays the operation is more complex: as if the content were rendered in a smaller/larger window, then zoomed to the actual window size.

Tony, yes, I forgot to add that sentence, or rather hoped that sciencegeek could to some degree live up to her nickname. (She tells us she is a she and an urban planner.)

You can set/change not only the size, but the specific font you like in most browsers.
Currently I use Palatino Linotype 16 for my usual browser.

If you really LIKE to play, you can set colors of links and whether they are underlined of not...etc...

There is stuff in the tool/menus that 98% of folks never look at. (I always reduce the size of the icons on my desktop and have a program to auto-hide them after 10-15 seconds...until I move my cursor.

You 'can' control most everything about your computer's display if you choose.

the only computer program I ever learned was FORTRAN.... the current software drives my crazy because it is one giant Black Box that I can't figure out. There is a reason why there have been so many "such and such for Dummies" books out there.

Anyhow, the tip about Crl + or - was a big help, because the hubby had managed to reduce the reading field on his earthlink page & we couldn't figure out how to restore it to regular size. he can now read his email on his laptop... yay!

Also note the mouse wheel part. Someone who realizes that she is a "dummy" cannot be a dummy at all - that is the deliberately ironic point of those book titles. Figuring out may have been a good idea in the FORTRAN era, nowadays more often googling and reading does the trick. Or asking Mudcat.

what I have had issues with is when something changes without me specifically asking for the change & trying to use the help menu is useless because I don't know what questions to ask/where to find the answer. I go around in circles asking one question after another to no avail. grrrrr!

There are a few web pages out there for which Ctrl+ or CtrlWheel actually does change the font size and doesn't zoom anything else. I don't know why it's different for those pages, but I run across one every few months, and I'm always frustrated because the space allotted to the text doesn't get bigger and so there are only a few words on each line when I get the font to the size I want.

And you can make Firefox do that on every web page if you want, in version 17 anyway. You can switch between zoom mode and font size mode:
Alt > View > Zoom > Zoom Text Only (click on it to toggle it on or off)
Zoom Text Only works pretty nicely for sites like Mudcat that don't have tons of advertising with only a thin column for the text you're really interested in.

Oh, I just found out that the newer Firefox has the pull-down menus on all the time. I like that. I should upgrade. So in version 24 you can skip the first step above -- omit the "Alt" and just click on View.

sciencegeek: Help screens are useless. Better to phrase the question in your own clumsy way and put it in the Google search box. That leads you to forums where somebody else asked the same question.
And before doing that, try right-clicking on something and see if what you want is one of the options in the "context menu" that pops up. Different context menus for different places where you right-click.
