Obit: Avril Cameron (Deal Folk Club) - 2013

Avril passed away in early November after a very long spell in hospital, and the cremation took place in Seaford, East Sussex on November 14. Avril ran the Deal Folk Club for many years, and I will recall my occasional visits, and her friendly welcome, with great affection. I did not know her well enough to write an obituary, but think that her long association with folk music in East Kent deserves some recognition. Avril will be sadly missed by her family, her wide circle of friends, and itinerant musicians like myself. R.I.P. Avril

indeed Jim,I played the club many times, and admired her sterling efforts in keeping the folk club going, she had yorkshire grit.
RIP Avril Cameron, and thanks for your help and support over the years.

That is sad. Avril put a lot into Deal Folk Club and was herself a very good singer.

It was such sad news to hear Avril had lost her battle after spending so long in hospital and having not been well for such a long time before that. She ran, in my opinion, one of the finest folk clubs in the south east, and it was always a pleasure to play there as well as hear her fine voice. I will be there this coming Friday and will remember her with much fondness. RIP Avril, you will be sorely missed.

The club has moved now but it was once in an upstairs room in an old pub on Deal seafront, with the shingle yards away.
I don't do many sea songs, but really enjoyed other folks singing
these. In summer conditions, the waves on the shingle were an excellent accompaniment, but in an easterly wind, the sash window had to be lowered quickly! This was Avril's club more than anyone's and she deserves a lot of credit for where it is today... R.I.P.

so many of Folk clubs like DEAL are real community clubs, I loved Deal as a place and as a club, not particularly fashionable but in my opinion, special.

I think I remember this concert more than any other I've ever been to.
The Deal club organised a concert in the cafe at the end of Deal Pier. The cafe was a structure of metal and glass - Crital type windows. In the middle of the concert the heavens opened, thunder, lightening, the works. The sea rushing in towards the beech. The band played on to a background as good as any laser show.
Thank you Deal folk club.

I'm sad to hear of Avril's death. I was a member of the club for some years and treasurer for a time. Her dedication contributed largely to the existence, for many years, of a genuine folk tradition in Deal, and beyond. Thank you, Avril.

Richard.

I had been aware that Avril had spent time in Hospital but I was shocked to hear of her death.

It's been a while since I had been to the Deal Folk Club and had lost touch.

She was without doubt a great singer in her own right and when performing a duet with Sue it was, I believe very special.

She will be sadly missed

Andrew

I remember Avril from the folk club she ran at Broadstairs Folk Week. Lovely lady and singer.

Knew Avril in the eighties in Belgium and later on in Broadstairs, but lost contact quite some time ago.
Shall always remember her cheerful sparkle.
My sympathy goes out to Kirsty and Julian, her children.
