Information, please, about a song 'Manchester Maggie' (I think!)   About 2 retired dray horses that meet in a retirement field.   I couldn't make that up!

Thanks,

Ed

I have a recording by The Houghton Weavers, here are my 'heard' lyrics:

MANCHESTER MAGGIE

Dublin Boy Paddy was resting in fields close to the Liverpool track
Paddy reflected with tears in his eyes there would be no going back
Manchester Maggie was munching away; she was contented a lass
Master had pensioned them off in the fields; they had been put out to grass

The Chorus -
Paddy said "What's gonna happen to us, Maggie? gossip is rife in the street.
Workhorses all of our lives, Maggie, we have been worked off our feet
Will we be wanted again, Maggie? just give me one little sign
What's gonna happen to us, Maggie? what's at the end of the line?"

"Remember them carthorses down by the docks pulling their lumbering craft
They seemed contented and I said to you carthorses they must be daft
Remember when one of them said to his mate 'Look at them heads in the air'
Little do they know they'll be obsolete; Dobbin, let's offer a prayer

[Chorus]

Dublin Boy Paddy was resting in fields close to the Liverpool track
Paddy's poor legs were arthritic and bent; he had a pain in his back
Manchester Maggie was munching away; she was no longer a lass
Saint Peter had them out by Sugarloaf Hill in daisies and sweet meadow grass

[Chorus]

Which album is this song on? I remember it clearly, but my dad (ex Houghton Weaver) cannot. It’s not the album previously mentioned (best of) because the song called Maggie on that album is a different song (a Foster & Allen song actually).

Thanks I’m advancr, if anyone knows. :-)

Hi Joe Doh, I am looking everywhere for a copy of Manchester Maggie. If you have a copy is there any way you could share it on the internet? Please contact me if you see this. I would love to hear this rare song once again. Thank you!
Susan

There is not a song bearing the name "Manchester Maggie" on any of the albums listed on the discography page of the Houhton Wavers' website, or any logical name derived from the lyrics provided that I could find. You could try contacting them at their website.

In the mean time you can listen to a rendition of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nSOCUl_VWk

I think an approach to learning about this song would be to contact the Yorkshire Ukulele Circle. They are on Facebook. cnd's link to the song done by Mr Brian Knott may then allow someone to reach Brian and make inquiries. Please re-read the OP wherein Trooper1 says s/he's not sure it was the Houghton Weavers that did the song.

Hi.

I was just searching for the lyrics to this as Tony sings a couple of sentences that I just can't pick up!

If you are still interested in this. It was on The Houghton Weavers LP "In the Rare Old Times" and is listed as "Maggie"

If you can get the EMI CD Best of it is also on there. Or I have an MP3 of it if no one minds me sharing it.

Hope this helps you out! Can anyone tell me where to get the lyrics though?!;)

Cheers

Peter,

Is this the right song? click -- it sounds right to me but just want to confirm

There are several "topic" videos on YouTube titled "Maggie" which don't sound to have the same lyrics but I would have a much better time transcribing this song than the other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB9oQWurKJQ

Hi.

Yep the 1st is the one.

Where some has the lyrics "in the street" I had it as "industry" but again what I hear didn't make sense hence trying to google the lyrics and origins of the song.

That's how I found this thread. I don't ever remember them singing this at a concert which was a pity as they used to tell the audience a bit about the songs!

Cheers
