From: Ian Hendrie I have seen some professional musicians using their G7 capo on the neck of their instruments in what I'll call the UP position, i.e. the open end of the capo is facing upwards. I was used to placing mine over the neck pointing DOWN and thought that if it came loose then at least it wouldn't fall straight to the floor. This is the method shown on the G7 website. Having now tried both I'm unsure of which is best. Can anyone give any reasons why the UP orientation might be better? Though I'm asking about the G7 capo I suppose some of the reasoning might apply to other capos as well. |

It literally fell apart of its own volition and fell off the guitar after a short period of use. Result - a crumpled mass of metal on the floor and one song ruined. I contacted the makers, was told there was a design fault in the originals and instantly offered a replacement. I declined. But I did request one of their "Nashvilles" instead, was given one and have had it and liked it for several years, now, with no problems at all.... All's well that ends well, in this instance.. G7 were good to deal with- a pity they put them out too early in the development - they were a damned expensive piece of kit at the time and still are!! :-) Regards to all...Spot |

Being a right-handed guitarist, I place the capo on my fretboard with my left hand. With the open mouth of the capo pointing downwards, the release catch falls easily under my fingers - which it doesn't if orientated the other way. Simples. |

From: PHJim While I've never used a G7 capo, I sometimes place a Shubb so that it covers the first five frets at the second fret. This allows me to play drop D (actually drop E) tuning, but make other chord shapes the normal way. The drawback is that a low F and F# on the 6th string are put out of reach. It shold work with and "open" capo like the G7 or Keyser... |

From: GUEST,Ray I also bought one of the early versions and its use was demonstrated to me by the person who invented/designed it. Whether you are an "uppie" or a "downie" is, I think, purely a matter of personal preference. Although mine has never fallen to bits there were problems with the little plastic lever on the originals which tended to snap off if the capo was dropped. Indeed this happened to mine and the manufacturer replaced it without question. I think you'll find that there is some sort of close relationship between G7 and Sheehan's music dealership in Leicester. |

From: Richard Bridge If you use drop E (ie capo the top 5 strings A to top E with the capo nearer the ground) you can thumb the F# to play for example A or Am shapes (really B or Bm), although the F natural is a bugger of a stretch. That's one reason not to use the special Drop D Kyser. |

Like having your nickers on back to front, and just as awkward. |

From: redhorse It's a question that could also be applied to any capo where the open side remains open when clamped, like a Shubb or the ubiquitous spring capos. I have always fitted them open side downwards on the assumption that the clamping will be better near the closed end than near the tip, and that the bass strings will need more clamping force than the treble strings. On the other hand, open side up seems more natural, as it mimics the hand. I've often wondered what was the intent of the designers, but not enough to do anything about it. |
