It's probably Traveller's Prayer, from his Ship of Fools cd. It's hauntingly lovely. I have words and midi at home (I'm at work now) and will try to post it here tonight.

This is a bit strange!
I have THE PENTANGLE discography which I got from:
Here THE PENTANGLE
http://www.folkcorp.co.uk/pent/discog.htm

The only song I can find on there which resembles your request is on the album ``One More Road´´,first track called ``Travelling Song´´.
I have this album BUT,the first track is called``Travelling Solo´´.
The Chorus goes :
Travelling solo hand in hand
Travelling through this foreign land
So full of beauty
So full of beauty.

Does this ring a bell?
I haven't heard(seen) the video you mentioned.Funny he didn't mention it!I was talking to John Renbourn, was it last year(or was it the year before)in Cornwall.
I'd just got hold of his video on Celtic Melodies and Open Tunings and he was surprised to find copies of that in CORNWALL.

If you think this could be what your looking for,I can post the full text later.

The only problem I have is that John Rembourn wasn't with the Pentangle when they made this album(1993)

Greetings John.

Sorry I didn't get to the midi yet. Unfortunately I think I can only post one line at a time, and the harmony is what makes it. I'll try to get to at least the melody later today- my computer's fine, but I crashed last night! --Allison

TRAVELLERS' PRAYER
(Arr. John Renbourn. From the Scottish Hebrides)

Praise to the moon, bright queen of the skies,
Jewel of the black night, the light of our eyes.
Brighter than starlight, whiter than snow,
Look down on us in the darkness below.

If well you should find us, then well let us stay,
Be it seven times better when you make your way.
Be it seven times better when we greet the dawn,
So light up our way and keep us from all harm.

Give strength to the weary. Give alms to the poor.
To the tainted and needy five senses restore.
Give song to our voices. Give sight to our eyes,
To see the sun bow as the new moon shall rise.

Cast your eyes downward to our dwelling place,
Three times for favor and three times for grace.
Over the dark clouds your face for to see,
To banish misfortune and keep trinity.

In the name of Our Lady, bright maiden of grace,
In the name of the King of the city of peace,
In the name of our Savior, who hung on the tree,
All praise to the moon, for eternity.

I'll have to wait for my computer-jock son to help me post the midi file. --Allison

From: raredance

I have a cassette of John Renbourn Toronto concert where he sings another song about a traveller that seems to be different from the ones above and the one that is sought.

SANDWOOD DOWN TO KYLE
As recorded by John Renbourn on "John Renbourn's Ship of Fools" (1988)

On Monday morn as I walked out
The wild birds for to see,
I met a man upon the road
And asked for charity.
I met a man upon the road
And asked for charity. (The second couplet of each verse is repeated throughout.)

Come home with me and drink your fill
And comforts you shall find;
And tell me why you walk the road
That leaves the hills behind.

For time has spent the summer, sir,
And soon the leaves will fall.
I hear the sound within the wind
That plays around your wall.

The bird must flee the winter, sir;
She cannot stay behind
To build her nest upon the snow,
Nor can I look for mine.

And if I had a hundred homes
To live in each a while,
I'd build them all along the coast
From Sandwood down to Kyle.

Two place names that I could not make out. Perhaps this has a title and is on another one of Renbourne's recordings.

rich r,

The song you posted, On Monday morn....., is a song called "Sandwood Down To Kyle" by Dave Goulder from Rosehall, Scotland. Great song, beautiful tune. I believe Sandwood and Kyle are both towns on the west coast of Scotland.

To whomever, thanks for supplying a title and songwriter and the missing place name. To think I actually got one right when I had no idea what the location was. There must still be a few hair cells in the old inner ear

LF, sorry I don't have any notation for it

I love this song; but as far as I know it is not called "Praise to the Moon," it is called "Traveller's Prayer" (at least that is what the DJ says every time I hear it on the radio) :) Animaterra; do you know the history of it? I had heard Renbourn and friends wrote it, not just arranged it...now I am very curious to know its origins...

these other songs which have come up on this thread look great, too!

DADGAD: I don't have the midi for "Sandwood down to Kyle" but for the Traveller's Prayer, the last song on Renbourn's Ship of Fool's cd.
Peg, the words are from the Hebrides; a man named Andrew Carmichael (I think) visited there around the late 19th century and collected what he considered the most ancient prayers and runes still extant. When I get home from work I can look up the name. Anyway, I believe John Renbourn wrote the melody and harmony for his version. I'll send the midi to Alan of Australia for his web page sometime this weekend (see Mudcat Resources for a link to Alan's page
On the Pentangle thread someone posted an anecdote about how nice Renbourn is. I've never met him, but he used to perform at the Folkways in Peterborough, New Hampshire, when it still existed, and made friends with some of the workers. When my women's chorus wanted permission to do Traveller's Prayer one of the former Folkway's people gladly contacted John, and he was happy to give us permission! I really like the way we women do it, even if I do miss the low bass notes!

I'll bet this is beautiful performed by a women's choir! Given the lunar subject matter and all...;)

From: Jim Dixon

I'm pretty sure this is the song our first requester had in mind, some 20 years ago:

TRAVELLING SONG
As recorded by Pentangle on "Pentangling" (1973)

Sittin' behind the front wheel,
Got my woman beside me, too.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.

I don't mind the drizzlin rain.
Inside it's warm and dry.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.

Die-dot-dah-dah-dah
Die-dot-dah-dah-dah

Faster, baby, let's go,
Racin' on through the night.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.
Oh, baby, we're goin' home.

And, baby, when we get there,
I'll do ev'rythin' for you,
Because, baby, we'll be back home.
Baby, we'll be back home.

Die-dot-dah-dah-dah
Die-dot-dah-dah-dah

All our hope is wet down,
Get stopped on this old highway,
Because, baby, we must get home.
Oh, baby, we must get home.

And I don't mind tellin you, gal,
A p'liceman won't do us good,
And a jailhouse would be my home.
A jailhouse would be my home.

So faster, baby, let's go,
Racin' on through the night.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.
Hey, baby, we're goin' home.

Die-dot-dah-dah-dah
Die-dot-dah-dah-dah
Die-dot-dah-dah-dah
Die-dot-dah-dah-dah
