15 Nov 99 - 08:25 AM (#136270) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: a travellers tune/song From: AllisonA(Animaterra) It's probably Traveller's Prayer, from his Ship of Fools cd. It's hauntingly lovely. I have words and midi at home (I'm at work now) and will try to post it here tonight. Allison |
15 Nov 99 - 08:28 PM (#136580) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: a travellers tune/song From: John Wood This is a bit strange! I have THE PENTANGLE discography which I got from: Here THE PENTANGLE http://www.folkcorp.co.uk/pent/discog.htm The only song I can find on there which resembles your request is on the album ``One More Road´´,first track called ``Travelling Song´´. I have this album BUT,the first track is called``Travelling Solo´´. The Chorus goes : Travelling solo hand in hand Travelling through this foreign land So full of beauty So full of beauty. Does this ring a bell? I haven't heard(seen) the video you mentioned.Funny he didn't mention it!I was talking to John Renbourn, was it last year(or was it the year before)in Cornwall. I'd just got hold of his video on Celtic Melodies and Open Tunings and he was surprised to find copies of that in CORNWALL. If you think this could be what your looking for,I can post the full text later. The only problem I have is that John Rembourn wasn't with the Pentangle when they made this album(1993) Greetings John. |
16 Nov 99 - 11:50 AM (#136834) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: a travellers tune/song From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Sorry I didn't get to the midi yet. Unfortunately I think I can only post one line at a time, and the harmony is what makes it. I'll try to get to at least the melody later today- my computer's fine, but I crashed last night! --Allison |

Praise to the moon, bright queen of the skies,
If well you should find us, then well let us stay,
Give strength to the weary. Give alms to the poor.
Cast your eyes downward to our dwelling place,
In the name of Our Lady, bright maiden of grace, I'll have to wait for my computer-jock son to help me post the midi file. --Allison |

17 Nov 99 - 07:05 PM (#137587) Subject: Lyr Add: SANDWOOD DOWN TO KYLE (from Renbourn) From: raredance I have a cassette of John Renbourn Toronto concert where he sings another song about a traveller that seems to be different from the ones above and the one that is sought.
SANDWOOD DOWN TO KYLE
On Monday morn as I walked out
Come home with me and drink your fill
For time has spent the summer, sir,
The bird must flee the winter, sir;
And if I had a hundred homes Two place names that I could not make out. Perhaps this has a title and is on another one of Renbourne's recordings. rich r [Title, source, and placenames inserted by a Mudelf.] |

Great song, beautiful tune. I believe Sandwood and Kyle are both towns on the west coast of Scotland. |

06 Oct 00 - 12:01 PM (#313529) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: a travellers tune/song From: Peg I love this song; but as far as I know it is not called "Praise to the Moon," it is called "Traveller's Prayer" (at least that is what the DJ says every time I hear it on the radio) :) Animaterra; do you know the history of it? I had heard Renbourn and friends wrote it, not just arranged it...now I am very curious to know its origins... these other songs which have come up on this thread look great, too!

06 Oct 00 - 01:07 PM (#313577) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: a travellers tune/song From: AllisonA(Animaterra) DADGAD: I don't have the midi for "Sandwood down to Kyle" but for the Traveller's Prayer, the last song on Renbourn's Ship of Fool's cd. Peg, the words are from the Hebrides; a man named Andrew Carmichael (I think) visited there around the late 19th century and collected what he considered the most ancient prayers and runes still extant. When I get home from work I can look up the name. Anyway, I believe John Renbourn wrote the melody and harmony for his version. I'll send the midi to Alan of Australia for his web page sometime this weekend (see Mudcat Resources for a link to Alan's page On the Pentangle thread someone posted an anecdote about how nice Renbourn is. I've never met him, but he used to perform at the Folkways in Peterborough, New Hampshire, when it still existed, and made friends with some of the workers. When my women's chorus wanted permission to do Traveller's Prayer one of the former Folkway's people gladly contacted John, and he was happy to give us permission! I really like the way we women do it, even if I do miss the low bass notes! |
06 Oct 00 - 01:42 PM (#313611) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: a travellers tune/song From: Peg I'll bet this is beautiful performed by a women's choir! Given the lunar subject matter and all...;) |

11 Jul 20 - 12:31 AM (#4063730) Subject: Lyr Add: TRAVELLING SONG (Pentangle) From: Jim Dixon I'm pretty sure this is the song our first requester had in mind, some 20 years ago: TRAVELLING SONG As recorded by Pentangle on "Pentangling" (1973) Sittin' behind the front wheel, Got my woman beside me, too. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. I don't mind the drizzlin rain. Inside it's warm and dry. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. Die-dot-dah-dah-dah Die-dot-dah-dah-dah Faster, baby, let's go, Racin' on through the night. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. Oh, baby, we're goin' home. And, baby, when we get there, I'll do ev'rythin' for you, Because, baby, we'll be back home. Baby, we'll be back home. Die-dot-dah-dah-dah Die-dot-dah-dah-dah All our hope is wet down, Get stopped on this old highway, Because, baby, we must get home. Oh, baby, we must get home. And I don't mind tellin you, gal, A p'liceman won't do us good, And a jailhouse would be my home. A jailhouse would be my home. So faster, baby, let's go, Racin' on through the night. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. Hey, baby, we're goin' home. Die-dot-dah-dah-dah Die-dot-dah-dah-dah Die-dot-dah-dah-dah Die-dot-dah-dah-dah |
