I had the pleasure of seeing him many, many years ago, and was knocked out by his fluency and tone. "The Train And The River" with the Jimmy Giuffre Trio was superb. RIP Jim. |

He was sitting in his kitchen early one winter morning, writing about the freshly fallen snow that had come down overnight and the fact that there were no animal or human tracks through it yet - - just a blank canvas. He compared that to the moment that a performer first walks out on stage, before a single note has been played or sung. Nobody knows what's going to happen next. That, he said (paraphrasing), is "the magic moment", and it's up to you (the performer) what you do with it. |

The Train and the River (on LP and since copied to CD) has been in my collection since I started buying records. A college friend (subsequently best man at my wedding and we still meet a couple of times a year)had the record and it knocked me out and I had to have my own copy. RtS |

I think he and Bill Evans and Miles kind of ushered in a "new" cool era. I like a lot of his stuff but am especially partial to his playing with Paul Desmond. Ham and Eggs.RIP. |
