Advent song thread (Haruo, elsewhere)

Subject: Advent song thread (Haruo, elsewhere)
From: Haruo

This Advent I have been posting a song text each day on my Facebook page, and also in a thread at BaptistLife.com. (I also suggest tunes, but generally don't actually give the music.) Now that we are in the last week before Christmas Eve, I have upped the frequency to three a day, namely one stanza of "O come, O come, Emmanuel" in Latin and English, following the progression of the Great "O" Antiphons; one Marian item (since the antiphons are intended for use with the Magnificat at Vespers), and one other song each day. Thus far, the list looks like this:

IA1        Arise, the kingdom is at hand        ELLACOMBE
IA2        The advent of our God        BETHLEHEM SHORT
IA3        Rock of Ages, let our song        MAOZ TSUR
IA4        Hail to the Lord's Anointed!        SHEFFIELD
IA5        Watchman, tell us of the night        WATCHMAN
IA6        See! see in the East a new glory ascends        SAMANTHRA
IA7        Subid a los montes, alzad la canción        ST. DENIO
IB1        Quoth the Fir-tree, orange and vine        MIRTH (Clark)
IB2        How splendid shines the morning star        MORNING STAR (Southern Harmony)
IB3        God from on high hath heard        ST. DENYS (Spinney)
IB4        Śliczna Panienka (Carol of the Hay)        ŚLICZNA PANIENKA
IB5a        Light the light, the fire of life        IL EST NÉ
IB5b        Light one candle to watch for Messiah        TIF IN VELDELE
IB5c        One Candle Is Lit        CRADLE SONG
IB6        The race that long in darkness pined        SHILOH (Billings)
IB7        The Prince of salvation is coming, Prepare        THE BLOOMING WILDERNESS
IC1        People, look east! The time is near        BESANÇON
IC2a        Some say love, it is a river        THE ROSE
IC2b        わが心 あまつ神を 尊み        MARY'S SONG (MacNair)
IC3a        The First Great "O" Antiphon of Advent        VENI EMMANUEL (stanza only)
IC3b        Mary, how lovely the light of your glory        STAR IN THE EAST
IC3c        Hail the blest morn! See the great Mediator        STAR IN THE EAST

I invite those who like this sort of seasonal music to follow along, singing where appropriate.

Thank you, Haruo. I'll look into matching the words with the tunes so I can sing them.

Another beautiful song for your list is "The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns."

Leeneia (and anyone else interested) let me know if you can't find the music, I'll try to supply scanned scores or youtube links or something so you know how the tunes go.

I'll second leeneia's suggestion.
The hymn is also known by the first word of its refrain "Maranatha" (Aramaic = "Our Lord comes")

Interesting list. I'll investigate some of those for Advent next year.

The King Shall Come, or Maranatha, is certainly a good suggestion. In the US it is usually set, in recent hymnals anyhow, to MORNING SONG, and in older ones to ST. STEPHEN (Jones); what tune do you know it to? And BTW is there a St. Stephen's Day (i.e. Boxing Day) text that is sung to the latter tune?

One you don't mention (though strictly speaking it's about the Annunciation) is the one by Baring-Gould that starts

The Angel Gabriel from heaven came
His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame

Always makes the hairs on my neck stand up...
