18 Dec 13 - 02:55 AM (#3585078) Subject: Is Mild still available in English Pubs? From: Bugsy Me and Mrs Bugsy are heading over to UK late August and September. I haven't been back for 20 years and I used to enjoy the odd pint or six of Mild, Preferably light, but dark if that's what's on offer. So the question is, Do Pubs still sell it? Is it readily available or will I have to comb the back woods of the Fens to find it? Also, do the folk clubs in UK still go into recess during summer? Cheers Bugsy |

From: GUEST,John Foxen I can thoroughly recommend the Oscar Wilde mild from the Mighty Oak Brewing Company of Maldon, Essex. As for a place to drink it: The White Hart, Swan Ln, Margaretting Tye, Ingatestone, Essex CM4 9JX. And the best time to drink it is on the second Thursday of the month when a splendid session is hosted by the fine Crane duet concertina player Paul McCann (starts around 8.30pm but you can come earlier and eat a good meal at the pub). A lot of folk clubs go into recess for summer but my club HaverFolk keeps going (with a break for the Whitby Festival week. We are based at the White Horse pub near Romford (see website for details). Hope to see you and Mrs Bugsy at the White Hart or Horse. |

From: Will Fly The Lewes brewery, Harveys, still brews a mild, and you can buy it on draught in some of their pubs. If you get to Brighton, the Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Street sells a good pint of it. I'm currently drinking Harveys Old at the moment - a nice, dark, stouty ale. My mate Chris is drinking pints of "mother-in-law" - old and bitter... |

Here in the North-West we're blessed with many milds, including Holts, Robinsons and Sam Smiths (imported from over t'hill) as well as many micro breweries. If visit a good real ale pub anywhere in the country chances are you might find a mild on. |

Not very common any more in Scotland. The Anvil in Bonnyrigg and the Dean in Newtongrange are the only places I know that always have it. |

Not easy to find - you'll have to go to a more selective pub. The Redemption Brewery are doing something called Trinity at 3%ABV but I'm not sure if its a mild or a weak bitter. It tastes a lot stronger than it is. |

Half bitter half mild. Always pour the bitter first or get shouted at.... Conversely, if you go back enough years, the contents of the drip trays together with a few bottles of stout were poured into the mild barrel. Waste not, want not..... |

Not light in colour, but not as dark as some others. Most of the "bigger" clubs have a summer recess which generally seems to start around the time of the Cambridge Folk Festival (end of July) and ends in early September, i.e. they're closed throughout August. |

I have heard however that it is very difficult to keep correctly, so it may not be available in all their pubs. The reason I used to drink Brown & Mild originally is that when I first started going into pubs (Aged 14) my brother who was 5 years older than me, advised me to order mixed pints "and always ask them to pour the mild first." An oddity of the Manchester scene is that all the local brewers offer at least one mild, but most of them have stopped using the word 'mild'. So if you do get up here, look out for (dark milds) Holt's Mild, Robinson's 1892 Dark, Hyde's Owd Oak, Lees' Brewer's Dark, Thwaites*' Nutty Black and Timothy Taylor**'s Dark Mild, and (light milds) Robinson's 1892, Hyde's 1863 and Timothy Taylor**'s Golden Best. Six brewers, nine beers, and only two of them with 'mild' in the name. *Not really a local brewery, but not far away. **Not a local brewery at all, but you do see their beer around town and it's generally good stuff. |

Some folk clubs close in August but they are all back in September. If you're going to be in Suffolk, get hold of a copy of Mardles magazine which will carry listings for folk clubs and sessions in Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. From: GUEST,jim bainbridge I'd never come across mild beer at all in my early drinking days in the 60s the Northeast- not part of the tradition of that area- weaker beer was known as 'Scotch' a a darker brew than the stronger 'Exhibition' beer from Newcastle Breweries, but certainly not as dark as mild- nor were the Vaux, Nimmo or Cameron equivalents. The word 'bitter' in the context of beer was unknown in that area and Geordie lads moving south were given a lot of respect when they ordered a pint of Scotch! Aware of this language problem, I remember asking just for a 'pint please' at the Swan Inn, on the riverside at Twickenham about 1964, only to be further confused when the barman said- 'do you want bitter or beer?' - 'beer' = mild at that pub. Didn't mind Shepherd Neame's mild when I moved to Kent, but the Master Brew was magic, a lovely hoppy beer- 2013 version is a pale shadow of that... |

Quite a few people here speaking of pale ale etc. Mild tends to be dark and weak as I always knew it. Someone above mentioned that some breweries are making porter and branding it as mild. You wouldn't have thought that a beer going out of fashion would attract so much confusion! Still, order an upside down mix in Mansfield and see what you get these days.... |

In any case, when they stopped the daily "tot" , we had to drink at least three bottles of "Stingo" barley wine every lunchtime just to get something even approaching a "fix" !!I still get "twitchy" around 1145-ish every day ! The latter was probably similar to mild beer in England. IT was often darkrr in colour although pale ale was often sold as light beer too. Usually, it was slightly cheaper and not quite as strong as heavy beer but different breweries still produced a different type of beer. They were often very different. Most good real ale pubs still sell pale ales but these will vary in strength and price. So, it's not quite the same as getting a pint of light or mild as such. I'm not too "au fait" with all the different keg beers these days though. I prefer cask or real ale whenever I can get it. |

I started working in pubs in 1964 and it was indeed true - half finished pints all went back into the mild barrels I do not know if this still true. |

It's my tipple of choice (a) because it's cheaper than the bitter, (b) because I strive to keep the traditional beers alive (I'm working hard on it), and (c) because when it's good it's good. BUT... it's very variable. Chesterfield is not a great mild area, and I suspect Maureen doesn't sell quite enough to keep it at its prime. And if you're in the area, try Brampton Mild. Named after the product of a long-defunct brewery, this is a really excellent pint, but it's much stronger than you'd typically expect mild to be (ie og between 1030 and 1035). The "new" Brampton Brewery does a whole range of very good beers; Golden Bud has a very good reputation (justly so). |
