25 Dec 13 - 01:48 AM (#3586462) Subject: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Dan Schatz Folks, please send good energy over to Michigan this Christmas night. Mick called to let me know he's in the hospital, following a headache and a tingling in his arm. He wisely decided to get it checked out and they found some bleeding in the head. The good news is that he's doing fine, has been thoroughly tested, and has no deficits - physical, mental or otherwise - but it may take him and his doctors a little while to sort it all out. And spending Christmas in the hospital pretty much stinks. Despite all that, Mick is in remarkably good spirits, has his sense of humor, and is agitating for his guitar to be brought to him NOW. If anyone needs info on where he is, etc. I can get that to you. Early signs seem to be that they caught this in time and can deal with it now - and we're all grateful for that. Thanks in advance for all your good energy, thoughts and prayers for Mick and family - they'll be much appreciated. Warmly, Dan |

25 Dec 13 - 09:16 AM (#3586521) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Severn Hail the Conklin Hero! As a veteran of many horse-spittle stays, including one that saw Christmas Eve turn to Christmas Day flat on my back in a Medivac chopper, my Yule-tied thoughts are with you. I know you're strong enough to withstand most anything fate throws at you and you had the good sense to put yourself in care in a timely manner, so enjoy the green Jello and rest easy, 'cause there's a lot of us here that have your back until you're back. Don't break too many nurses' hearts when your arm goes ting-a-ling to call them for assistance. Get out of there in one big healthy chunk, and who knows, maybe there's a song in this! Think Positive-Test Negative, Severn |
25 Dec 13 - 09:20 AM (#3586523) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: GUEST,Dan Schatz without cookie Here's an update from Liz, Mick's daughter: I am Mick's daughter. I just want to say thank you for any well wishes and prayers you are sending my dad. It is a scary time for our family but like Dan said, he is doing great considering everything that is going on. We are grateful for small things that ensured he was able to get quick attention and he is in great hands. As his family we have made sure he has not been alone in the hospital and we will continue to be sure of that. Although it stinks that he is in the hospital for Christmas, that too is also a blessing as much of his family has time off and is in town when they may not otherwise be, so he wants for nothing, other than to get this fixed and go home of course. We hope you all have a great holiday and please remember to cherish your loved ones! Dan |

25 Dec 13 - 07:01 PM (#3586618) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: catspaw49 Geeziz Mick.....You got it all wrong man but then again being from Michigan that ain't so unusual. Lemmee explain this one to you. As part of the founders of Lane, Fielding, Patterson, and Swan, we all started with different jobs to do for the company to keep things operating. All along from then on I was the appointed Sickfuck. Then Fielding decided to take a bit of that job from me. Rick was always helpful like that but he went overboard, and broke his last G-string. Bad news for everyone although corporately he began booking more lay-about hours than ever before, easily become our most productive partner. You had a few minor ticker problems but got them sorted out before I had to remind you that you were not the one with that job. Then that damn Swan goes and gets his dumb ass really messed up and laid up which kept him from his real responsibilities to LFPS but certainly helped our profits for awhile. I never felt that Brother Dave was trying to take my position as Rick had done so I wasn't too hard on him. This brings me to your Irish Badger (Double Dumbshit) ass. This kind of thing you're up to now could possibly infringe on my position and you need to stop it.......NOW! See, I've been in this game for almost 15 years now and I don't need competition from some amateur. Let me keep being the second best booker with LFPS because walking that fine line is touchy and all too easy to go over as we sadly found with Rick. While it maybe true that my most recent problems are not solvable, I'm still doing pretty fair at continuing to walk that tightrope. I love you Bro but you don't need to infringe on my position as Sickfuck and I am telling you now, partner to partner......STOP! I am sending you my best thoughts to feel better, get well, and get the hell off my turf! Spaw Patrick F. Patterson Founding Partner, Lane, Fielding, Patterson, and Swan Lay-A-Bouts At Large and For Hire We do nothing for you. It is the least we can do.....the very least |

29 Dec 13 - 06:51 PM (#3587410) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: McGrath of Harlow Only just saw this, which was as well, because the news is better, and the Big Fella has spoken. Christmas in hospital is a drag, as I know from three years back, and worst for the family. But I reckon Mick's being there will be quite good for the other people who have to be in there at this time, especially the nurses. And the cleaners - they always seemed a good lot in my experience. Having the guitar in there is good company, especially if they've stuck you in a single room, which can be a lot less interesting than a shared ward. Be back soon, but take your time. |
29 Dec 13 - 08:07 PM (#3587424) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: gnu I was in a ward a few years back. 4 guys. One guy in bad shape and two of us checked on him a lot. When it got bad, I counted 22 medical staff in the room at one time. It was tense! Poor bugger... just a young guy of near 50. Very sad. One old guy was spaced out on happies but fun to talk to when I could get him to tell me stories. The guy in bad shape and the happy old lad didn't mind my snoring but the poor man directly across from me was hard put. I explained my sleep apnea and he was cool with it. Sometimes, being in a ward is better. Not near as good as yer own bed but schenacadaie (spg? any Celts?). Slainte big guy... I am pullin fer ya. Good luck. |

30 Dec 13 - 10:03 PM (#3587700) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: McGrath of Harlow "Sometimes, being in a ward is better. Not near as good as yer own bed but ..." Well, best to have a bed to yourself in hospital, gnu, but on the whole I'd prefer that bed being in a room with other people. You can meet such interesting ones, and they open up in ways they otherwise don't. For example, one time there was a bloke well on in his nineties who had been a well respected football professional back in the day. His memory was fading and he was pretty confused at times, but when it came to flirting with the nurses he was right back on the ball... I reckon it'd be great being on a ward with Big Mick. 01 Jan 14 - 08:53 AM (#3588089) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: gnu Posted 4 hours ago on Facebook... Mick Lane with ****** ***** and 98 others I guess I have had more enjoyable Christmas & New Years holidays, and yet I take a curious satisfaction in this one. For those that aren't aware of my situation, I was rushed to hospital on Monday before Christmas with a subdural hematoma (brain bleed) and have been here ever since. I won't bore you with details, but safe to say it is a struggle. It appears there is no loss off function, strength, vision or speech. I have a ways to go, but I will get there. But let's get to the blessings. First, to be surrounded by my daughters, wife, God Daughter, fills me with love, appreciation, and redemption. Those special blessings that are my grand kids bring as they snuggle with poppa "extra tight" bring a depth of love and immortality that one must experience to know. My beloved brother and sisters, and my sweet Mom, were there from the start. Having them in my life gives it meaning. I cannot express how much love flows through this family. And then there are my friends. Whether you are near or far, in countries and States all over the world, your outpouring of concern and well wishes humbles me. And a speciall shoutout to Pat Woods who called from Armagh in the North of Ireland. That's the only shoutout I will do, because there are too many of you. I am tiring now, so I will sign off, but I leave you with this. Your kindness is making a difference, and I will do everything I can to reward it with great music. Love to all. |

01 Jan 14 - 10:30 AM (#3588103) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Rapparee Oh, well, hell. A subdural hematoma. They've been able to fix them for years. You just clamp the patient's head in a head vise, shave his scalp if needed, cut a flap of skin, and drill right down into that ol' hematoma to relieve the blood pressure against the brain. You gotta be careful not to drill too deep, that's all, unless the patient is Irish because then you can't hit anything vital anyway. And the good thing is, if you miss the hematoma it's okay! See, there is no such thing as a "subdural hematoma." It's really evil spirits that get into your head and drilling the hole gives them a way to escape. The very best people who do this drill two holes so they can blow smoke in one and force the evil spirits to leave by way of the other. Irishers are full of evil spirits, among other things. Many are also full of good spirits, like Black Bush and 16 year old Bush and Red Breast and other, even better spirits. And THOSE are the spirits Mick needs to be full of, so start getting those holes drilled, ya hear? |

06 Jan 14 - 07:57 PM (#3589591) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Big Mick Hellooooo ....... I'm home! After 11 days in hospital, I am now entering my fourth day back in my home. Feels good. First let me tell you how much I appreciate all your expressions of concern, as well as your prayers, healing thoughts, and well wishes. Those sentiments are tossed around far too casually by some, but I want you all to know how sincerely I mean them. To be laying in a bed, unsure of what is happening or what the future holds, then to have this outpouring of support from friends near and far is healing, humbling and gratefully received. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Next, I would like to apologize for not being a little more forthcoming on my condition. There were several reasons, not the least of which was security for my home and instruments. I live rural, and wanted to be sure everything was secured in my absence and did not want too public a face on my absence. Also, events, and my mental condition made any in depth descriptions a little difficult. Everything got kind of random there for a while. So .... What happened? A couple of months ago, just before my Ireland concert tour, I started getting a sharp pain in my head when I would cough. As I have struggled with sinus most of my life,I assumed that was happening. My Physician thought the same thing. As I cannot take decongestants, I started using the neti pot, and it offered relief. So off I go to visit Seanmháthair Éire, had a great tour, came home started preparing for the holidays, and finishing work on the Ritchie Project, etc. Monday, the 23rd, I was doing some errands with my daughter when my left arm started tingling and going numb. I immediately had my daughter head for hospital, they rushed into MRI, where it was discovered I had a subdural hematoma a little over a centimeter thick. Angio scheduled the next day revealed it wasn't congenital or due to degradation, so it must have come from a blow to the noggin, though I am switched if I remember the blow. I have been on Plavix and a full aspirin daily since my heart attack 10 years ago. I bleed so easily that a scratch bleeds like a stab wound. The various scans showed varying ages in the bleed, so figure I must have hit my head in the shop, cursed threw rocks, and then ignored it. It finally let me know it was through being ignored. Prognosis at this point looks good, no loss of any function. This next six weeks are going to be shite, as I am severely restricted in any lifting or physical activity. I think it is time to finally marry that keyboard, and dig into writing some of the songs that I have floating out there in the corners of my noggin. DON'T TELL SPAW but the Doctor said, and I am quoting here, I have "an amazingly plump, young looking, big brain". He said this in the context of why they couldn't try dissolving the clot instead having to evacuate it. He said there was no room up there for anything extra. HA! I will take a load of aul shite over that one, for sure. So things are looking up, at this point anyways. I tire easily, and stringing together long thoughts like this are a bit taxing, but I will take it. The nagging headaches are a bit trying, but they tell me that is to to be expected as the brain re occupies the space. So there you have it, my friends. I will end as I started by thanking you all, and most especially by thanking my dear friend Max. Buddy, because of your good works, trying as they have been for you, you have created a worldwide community of friends, and musically family. Your sacrifices over the years planted the seeds that have made my life better in so many ways. Know that I love you, my younger friend, and wish all good things for you. AND ALL OF THE REST OF YOUSE LAYABOUTS AS WELL! All the best, Mick |

17 Feb 14 - 12:46 PM (#3602275) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Big Mick Update on Mick. Well it has been a long two months. Forgive me for not being more forthcoming on my condition, but I have a couple of reasons. First, when I am dealing with illness/injury, I tend to act like an old bear. I den up and heal. I don't ask for much, and mentally go to a place of focus on the problem at hand. Second, I live in a rural place, and would rather not make it known that I am not around. Musicians know what I am talking about here. On to the update. I have basically been on my back for two months. After they evacuated a massive centimeter thick subdural hematoma that covered a good deal of the left temporal lobe, they sent me home in early January with restrictions that basically left me unable to do anything. I wasn't allowed to lift anything, couldn't drive or even take long walks. A few days later I got hit with an attack of Aphasia. This is basically an inability to form words. My mind was clear, I knew what I wanted to say, no weakness or dizziness, I just couldn't make words. Just gibberish. This would last 5-10 minutes and then slowly subside. I ended up back in the Neurological Unit for another 8 days. I was having several of these episodes a day. They started out thinking I was having seizures, but two MRI's and EEG's later they were sure that was not the case. They managed to capture two of the episodes on EEG and said my brain function showed no seizure activity. They figured that there was a fluid buildup post op and that was causing the Aphasia. They then sent me home, on an anti seizure med, and a 6 day prednisone series, for three more weeks with the same friggin restrictions and then brought me back to the epilepsy monitoring unit to run a 5 day/24 hour a day EEG. This was important in order to rule out seizure activity. What a colossal pain in the arse that was. I looked like a character in a low budget 1950's era science fiction movie. 42 leads superglued to your scalp, plus five more for the EKG. Plus they monitor you with a camera around the clock. The damn thing follows you as you move around the room. Sometimes you forget that someone is watching you, (Fellas, pay attention here) and you reach down and scratch yer stuff, then all of a sudden it hits you that someone is watching. So you try to make like you were scratching your hip. The nurses told me that I would be amazed at what they see sometimes. They said that I was pretty smooth in how I tried to cover up that I was scratching what I was scratching. Anyway, after the monitoring was done, they FINALLY m lifted my restrictions, and told me I needed to remember that I was on my backside for two months, and it would take 6 - 8 weeks to rehab. That was this past Friday. But I had promised the wonderful folks at the Muskegon Irish American Society that I would perform on Sunday with the Conklin Ceili Band. They had already postponed their annual pub party a month on my account, so I would be damned before I wouldn't be there. My wind was shot, I had to sit down to play, but damn it felt good to be back onstage, playing for this group of friends that I have come to cherish. But I am paying for it today. So now begins the process of getting my wind and muscle tone back, and developing new and exciting material in my music. This event has made it clear to me that the time we have to do what we love is finite. There was a time in the beginning of this where it was touch and go for my having a complete stroke. I realized that I don't have time for foolishness as regards the things I want to accomplish musically. For some that will not be good news as I will have to shed them, for others it will be great as we explore together with focus. In the end it is all about the music, the song, and the people listening. It is all about touching people, making them feel something, moving them to action, delivering a message, or simply telling a tale. I hope for those of you who walk the same path, it means you will take pleasure in the music, and the craic, to come. Onward. |

17 Feb 14 - 01:49 PM (#3602305) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: McGrath of Harlow Great to hear from Mick again. That description of aphasia sounded a bit like a terrible drinking aftermath.... So take care. As you say Mick, we've all got less time to go than we used to, and a lot of things to do. I wrote a song once with the lines "All things must pass, it's time that we were doing All those things that so long we meant to do at last, The walls might come down, but there's still life in these ruins, The ship might go down, but the flag is at the mast..." I had a friend at work who always used to greet me "Are you winning?" And I'd say "I am!" He was Irish, of course. And that's what Mick would answer, I know. |
17 Feb 14 - 04:41 PM (#3602345) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Jeri Great to hear from you, Mick! My friend gets migraines that involve the following symptoms: aphasia and blindness. That's it--no head pain or anything else. I'm not suggesting that's the same as what you have, since all those medical folks have done damned near everything but a colonoscopy... unless you're just not talking about that. It's just that the brain does some very bizarre things sometimes. Wishing health for you, and I hope you get your wind back because it's not a good thing when that gets broken. |

22 Feb 14 - 05:52 PM (#3603894) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Big Mick THEY SAY THESE THINGS COME IN THREES....... .... and the saga continues. So I get out of the hospital a week ago last Friday, take a day of rest, then head out to Muskegon, Michigan (home of the fabulous Michigan Irish Music Festival) to play an afternoon concert for those wonderful folks at the Muskegon Irish American Society. We had a great time, and while my breathing caused me a few problems, nonetheless I had a mighty time and just enjoyed the hell out of myself. After the gig I had dinner with my Mom, sisters, brother, and spouses. As the night progressed, my breathing seemed to progressively get worse, and sleep that night was very difficult. The next morning I called the Doc, he had me come in on Tuesday, after some diagnostics he told me he wanted me to head for the emergency room. After a CT w/dye it was determined that I had pitched some Pulmonary Embolisms and a number of them were on top of my lungs, two of which were of significant size. I was admitted to hospital and spent four days on a Heparin drip. I just got out last night with a prescription for Coumadain. I also have to administer myself four injections a day of injectable Heparin for about a week, and use o2 until my blood ox level gets back to where it should be. The Doc's tell me that the Heparin treatment, combined with the Coumadain, will likely allow my body to re-absorb the clots in 4 to 8 mints. With luck my breathlessness will steadily make improvements during that time. Damn, this crap needs to stop, I have music to make! A couple of quick points. First, the gig on Sunday didn't cause the problem. The clots were already there. In fact, if anything, the gig likely caused me to seek treatment quicker than I otherwise would have. I likely would have just sat around and hoped it would pass. So to my friends in Muskegon, and my beloved bandmates, put that out of your minds. Second, I am not sure how much music I will be able to play during this St. Pat's season. My goal, at this point, is too play everything we have booked. But I have to be honest, I am not certain if that will be possible. But my bandmates are such a talented bunch that they will cover it in some form. Plus the talented Lexi Schaub, granddaughter of bandmates Mike Scott, will do some songs during some of the lead up gigs. I hope our fans will forgive me if I sit while I play, or take it a bit easy onstage. All the best, Mick |

I know this might surprise some of you, but I can be a little stubborn at times ;-) I will be damned if these two close calls will be much more than a bump in the road. My Doctor did say that there must be something I am on earth for, because he has never seen anyone with so many close calls. I told him I was still here because he has kids to get through college. |

You'd better be out of the horse spittle before then or I'll plan to take a trip your way as soon as I'm able and pour some sense into yer thick Irish head (Bushmill's, 16 years old). |

24 Feb 14 - 08:38 PM (#3604549) Subject: RE: BS: Thoughts for Big Mick From: Janie What Dani said, and what Sins said, Mick. It's obvious how much the old gang here loves and cares about you. That ain't half as much as your family and beloved friends and cohorts in your immediate 3-D neck of the woods. You are surrounded by powerful mojo of love, care and concern. I don't know that mojo has any effect on bleedin' when and where it ain't best to bleed or clottin' when and where clottin' ain't supposed to occur. I do know that knowing there are people all over the place who truly care is sustaining and and a comfort. You are a passionately caring person and now is the time to let that passionate caring apply to yourself. Hard to realize sometimes that passion and patience are not mutually exclusive. I know you will keep doing what you love and are passionate about, and do it from wise mind. Your task right now is not to worry that others will think they may have caused you harm. Your task right now is simply to decide, moment to moment, what you need to do to take care of yourself. I suspect you have surrounded yourself over time with friends, musicians, etc., who are themselves pretty wise, and don't need for you to worry about if they are worried about "pushing" you too far. Much love and respect, Janie |
