He was recorded in 1985 by James Foley and these recordings (or a certain number of them) were released by Peter Kennedy on his Folktrax label under the title: The Fairy Boy (FTX - 178). It seems from my searching thus far that there are currently no recordings of John Corry commercially available. I wondering if anybody out there might be able to help me!? Thanks Alan |

I would be definitely be interested in tracking that down also. I searched ITMA online and came up with nothing for John Corry. I've haven't been into the archive itself yet to search. I checked the Camsco website as well...I didn't get any results searching for John Corry but maybe I'll email them to enquire further. thanks again Alan |

It's a compilation and has but two tracks by John Corry. Track No.4 The Duck from Drummuck 4.07 and Track No.9 Bold Frank McHugh 1.55 |

Tyrone From: Jim Carroll John Corry has two songs on Harvest Home, 'Little Penknife' and a highwayman ballad, 'Bold Frank McHugh'. Both are rare and interesting songs, if I remember rightly, well sung. I have included the notes to 'penknife' below; will do the longish notes to 'McHugh' later if it is of interest - will supply texts to the two songs as well.. I would have thought John Moulden might have more information on the singer - very much his territory of work - Len Graham or Sean Corcoran might also be able to help. The only other version I know in print is in Edith Fowke's Penguin Book of Canadian Folksongs (London, 1973, No. 80, "The Footboy") where she states: "This ballad is puzzling: I have been unable to find it in any traditional collections in either Britain or North America, or in any broadside collections." The geographical confusion in the first line (Armagh is in the North and Clare in the South of Ireland) is repeated in all the other local versions except one, which just as confusingly begins: "In the County Cavan near Kildare." Below is the tracklist for John Corry, Lovely Isle of Saints, Folktrax 90178. According to my database, the recordings were all made Nov-Dec 1985 by James Foley. Without wishing to open up the same old can of worms, I wonder if this release represented Peter Kennedy up to his old nefarious tricks again. IE., cadge the recordings from the collector and issue them on cassette without seeking the permission of either collector or singer. I should add therefore that I didn't buy the tape. John, I think you've got your tracklistings slightly askew. According to aforementioned database, It's Desmond Ward who sings the Duck from Drummuck, not John Corry.
