03 Jan 14 - 10:47 PM (#3588863) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: Ebbie Having long since been sensitized by the Louvin Brothers, when the Everly Brothers came along I quickly embraced them too. There is something almost visible in family recordings and whether it is because of synchronized breathing and syllable patterns or something less physical, it has always shivered my spine. RIP, Phil Everly. And thanks. |

Wow, so sad to hear this terrible news. His wife said he was a smoker his whole life...he had pulmanary disease. I used to live near the hospital where he passed away at in Burbank, California. I have loved the music if the Everly Bros. for decades and it really saddens me so much to hear about Phil tonight. |

04 Jan 14 - 04:12 AM (#3588906) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: GUEST,Raggytash Guest, The fame of the Everly Brothers is such that they must have had an influence on a great many people. Rolling Stone magazine once called them "the most important vocal duo in rock" Artists said to be influenced by them include the Beach Boys and the Beatles. On a personal note their close harmonies were a thing of wonder to me as a teenager. I'm sure over the next few days many major recording artists will add their own thanks to the Everly Brothers. |

04 Jan 14 - 07:10 AM (#3588955) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: Janie So sad to hear this. Like so many others here, I literally grew up with them on the radio and the turntable. I was 6 when Bye Bye Love was released. The appeal of their incredible harmonies crossed generations. Mom and Dad loved them too, and routinely bought their 78's and 45's as they were released. Condolences to his family and all who loved him. |
04 Jan 14 - 07:59 AM (#3588966) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: GUEST,Bredda Such sad news. Literally the soundtrack of my early teenage years. Wonderful harmonies and beautiful music. That drum roll? in "ebony eyes" is repeating in my head now. Cannot think which is my favourite track - there were so many good songs. And they were such nice blokes! I am genuinly weeping now - they were so much part of my life when I was young. |
04 Jan 14 - 09:29 AM (#3588983) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: GUEST,Big Ballad Singer The Everly Brothers were an influence on a certain mop-headed foursome from the UK, too, IIRC. My own professional singing duo partner and I used to perform several Everly Brothers songs. Nothing beats harmony vocals and a swinging early-rock-n-roll beat, whether it be from a doo-wop group or from the legendary Everlys. RIP, Phil. |

I think it was Arlo Guthrie who remarked some time ago that yes, the Everlys' music was indeed folk music, "because that's what folk musicians sing when they get together." Yes indeed. |

04 Jan 14 - 08:18 PM (#3589124) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: GUEST,roderick warner Sad news indeed - Everly Brothers have been part of my life since I was very young. Dug out the Albert Hall Reunion Concert tonight - which I watch every couple of years or so and which never loses its shine, but v poignant this time round. I was amused by the medley when they do a beautiful version of 'Barbara Allen,' a song I can't stand but my opinion etc - a couple of verses and out as one of them says that it does go on and on, to paraphrase. Yep. The last song 'Let it be me' when they look at each other over all those years of fighting is a total mindfuck. RIP |

06 Jan 14 - 04:07 AM (#3589340) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: Mr Red not just pop music. Their rendition of "Barbara Ellen" is, IMNSOHO, definitive. I remember them coming to Birmingham in 1972 (ish) and the harmonies where just like their recordings. Not always the case with other artists. |
06 Jan 14 - 10:48 AM (#3589423) Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Everly RIP January 3, 2014 From: Sir Roger de Beverley I saw them at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in the very early 70s and they were great. Did any UK catters notice that all of the black and white footage of them shown on TV this week featured the crickets (Sonny Curtis, Jerry Allison and Joe Mauldin) as the backing musicians? Of course, Phil was one of the pallbearers at Buddy Holly's funeral. I always used to reckon that whichever version of love hurts people remembered pretty much defined their era as a teenager - the Everly's 1960 original for us oldies, and others in 1973 and 1975 for the younger ones.
