Not sure of the details apart from the fact that he had stopped doing his folk show due to an aggressive brain tumour. Thoughts are with his family and friends |

11 Jan 14 - 10:26 AM (#3590991) Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Evans has died From: GUEST,Henry Piper of Ottery. Sad News indeed, I new Simon for Many years, initially through our mutual membership of Hartley Morris, and in the last few years via his bookings of my Jazz Band for the most excellent Fete he helped to organise on West Peckham green. He should also be remembered for the research work on the Mumming traditions of the Darenth Valley he did with the late Charlie Jacobs. and the enormous amount of work he did on the music and lives of the Traveller Community. My condolences to all his Family and friends. |
17 Jan 14 - 10:07 AM (#3592940) Subject: Obit: Simon Evans From: GUEST,George Frampton I've just heard via Doug Hudson that the radio broadcaster Simon Evans died last week aged 61. I heard back in July that he had an inoperable brain tumour. Simon was also one of those indefatiguable folksong collectors, focusing his effort of Kent's travellers. Indeed, his recordings and broadcasts on the subject on Radio Four and BBC Radio Kent are required listening for anyone with an interest. The front room in his cottage is given over to only part of his collection of tape recordings. There are few musicians in Kent with who never met Simon, as he was keen to take an interest, if not devote recording time in his studio at Sun Pier, Chatham. Indeed, the Thomas Clark Quire were given time to introduce themselves, and later perform its repertoire of Christmas carols and hymns in its infancy. Like many of us, broadcasting and collecting was only part of what he did for a living. He was a social worker, and exhibited as a photographer as OpenProductions. e was also a parish councillor for West Peckham, and campaigner for rural affairs in the area. My condolences and thoughts are with Sharon and his three children. |

We know we have lost someone very special not much we could or can do about that all a bit overwhelming ! Thanks again , Sharon . |
16 Jun 14 - 01:04 PM (#3633618) Subject: RE: Obit: Simon Evans has died 2014 From: GUEST,Trevor Mason I knew and worked with Simon on & off for a number of years, including Radio Kent. When at the Arts Council I commissioned Simon to record the songs & stories of Ambrose Cooper and with Chris Wood, the Listening to the River project. Before he died we had been talking about working on the Deadman Island project about the history of the Medway Estuary. I'd very much to hear his work and for it to be available to all. Do let me know if I can be of any help in bringing his radio work to the web. I have a small studio at home and access to professional recording equipment. |
