Lyr Req: Giant (Stan Rogers)

Subject: lyric? giant will rise (ride?) with the moon
From: nick

Help! I've been humming this tune for years-- ever since I heard it on what I took to be a live recording of Stan Rogers, but I have not found it... Anyway, heres the lyrics I remember: ... young friends and old whisky around the fire side Cast the glass down! Fingal will ride with the moon the giant will ride (maybe rise?) with the moon

Congratulations on your excellent taste.

I have the lyrics and music in a Stan Rogers music book and will transcribe the words and chords for you as soon as I have a chance. Since I leave on a 5-day canoe trip tomorrow, this may not be until next week.

Bob

I think you just have to hear the live performance of Giant on the Home in Halifax CD to get the full ambiance. The intro (mostly by Garnet) is wonderful.

I love this song so much I've memorized it - here ya go:
(and yes, Garnet's intro must be heard to appreciate the mythology)

GIANT
(Stan Rogers)

Cold wind on the water, and rain on the road
Wet promise of winter brings recourse to coal
There's a fire in the blood and a fog on Bras d'Or
The giant will rise with the moon.

It's the same ancient fever from the isles of the blessed
That our fathers brought with them when they "went west"
It's the blood of the druids that never will rest
The giant will rise with the moon.

CHORUS: So crash the glass down, move with the tide
Young friends and old whiskey are burning inside
Crash the glass down, Fingal will rise ... with the moon.

In inclement weather the people are fey
Three thousand year stories as the night slips away
To think of old Fingal seems not far away
The giant will rise with the moon.

The wind's from the north, there'll be a new moon tonight
But we have no circle to dance in its sight
So light a torch, bring a bottle, and build the fire bright
The giant will rise with the moon.
(Chorus)
(Repeat first part of first verse)

**interesting note: the Bras d'Or are known as lakes that NEVER have fog -
so if there's fog on Bras d'Or in this song, you know something unusual is happening!

Has anyone else noticed that when truncated, the giant is rising with the moo...getting up with the cows, perhaps?

I grew up and lived in Cape Breton for at least half of my life, but this is the first time I ever heard that the Bras d'Or lakes are known for not having fog. I will blurt this out the next time I'm at a party there to see if this is common knowledge.

I got that "no fog" stuff from a tourist brochure, not any kind of personal knowledge. I'd love to know if the locals agree!

I've spent two vacations so far on Cape Breton and have decided that if I ever become rich I will buy a summer retreat there. I'll never forget the evenings I spent in Cheticamp listening to scottish fiddle music accompanied by French lyrics. The winters must be rough, though - where did you live?

Susan-Marie: As I grew up in Cape Breton, I saw many a fog cover the Bras d'Or lakes but witnessed no inexplicable activities except when my buddy Gabe was engineering one of his practical jokes. Our Druid neighbours must have been exceedingly adept at keeping their activities hidden.

I transcribed the following from the book "Stan Rogers, Songs from Fogarty's Cove." There are a few minor wording differences from Susan-Marie's version. I play it with regular tuning - but then, I'm no Stan Rogers.

GIANT
Words and music by Stan Rogers, Pro Canada, published 1976 by Fogarty's Cove Music, Inc.
Tuning DADGBD Capo 5th fret

(Verse 1)
Cold [G] wind on the harbour and [Dm7] rain on the road,
Wet [G] promise of winter brings [C] recourse to coal.
There's [Bb/D] fire in the blood and a [G] fog on Bras [C] d'Or.
The [Bb] giant will [F] rise with the [G] moon.

(Verse 2)
'Twas the same ancient fever in the Isles of the Blest
That our fathers brought with them when they "went west."
It's the blood of the Druids that never will rest.
The giant will rise with the moon.

(Chorus)
So [Bb] crash the [F] glass [G] down. [F] Move with the [C] tide.
Young [Bb] friends and old whiskey are [C] burning in- [G] side.
[Bb] Crash the [F] glass [G] down.
[F] Fingal will [C] rise ... [D/C] ... [C] ... with the [Bb] moon. ... [G]

(Verse 3)
In inclement weather the people are fey.
Three-thousand-year stories as the night slips away.
Remembering Fingal feels not far away.
The giant will rise with the moon.

(Verse 4)
The wind's in the north. There'll be new moon tonight.
And we have no Circle to dance in its sight.
So light a torch, bring the bottle, and build the fire bright.
The giant will rise with the moon!

(Repeat Chorus)

(Repeat Verse 1)

Just goes to show that we tourists will believe anything.

Bob, Ron, I humbly apologise for propagating incorrect information about the Bras d'Or.

However, I am glad to know that when I go back (hopefully next summer) there are people in this forum who can give me advice on where to find the best music. :)
