Girvan @ Celtic Connections

Girvan has hosted a folk festival for almost 40 years and to celebrate this milestone there will be a number of events leading up to the festival over the MayDay holiday weekend. The first of these is a special exhibition at Celtic Connectiions – details below.

2014 marks the 40th Girvan Folk Festival. The Festival started in 1975, a time when folk music in Scotland was increasingly exploring its own roots. The core of the photographic exhibition catches many people at an interesting stage of their musical journeys. They had been around long enough to have established their identity but with long roads ahead of them. For many people this period is seen as a golden age. It was a time of creativity in all areas of music but was a particularly key period for folk music in Scotland. The exhibition will feature photographs over the years with commentary.

The exhibition is in the main bar area at the Royal Concert Hall throughout Celtic Connections 2014.

Enabled with financial support from South Ayrshire Council.
Also with support from Ayrshire & Arran Tourism and Visit Scotland

I've some great memories of this festival, especially singing ballads and getting drunk with Kathy! Some brilliant late night sings in the pubs too.

Good memories here too. It was the first UK festival I ever attended. That was back in 2000. It was like discovering a whole new world! The Girvan festival is the perfect size too - plenty of music, sessions and song circles but small enough not to be overwhelming. It's a beautiful setting on the harbour with a good view of the Ailsa Craig. And, because of its location (not that far from the English border, and an easy ferry ride over from Ireland, it attracts musicians from all three areas (including Scotland, of course)so there's a great mix.

Viewed it today and enjoyed picking out familiar faces, or guessing at the unknown (to us)ones. Lots of good memories of Girvan Festivals over the last 10 or 12 years I've been going, and looking forward to the next: accommodation already booked as even when the programme might not be finished, you know they always put on a good show!

Went to see the exhibition on Saturday - fabulous photos and lots of great memories of previous Girvan festivals. Lovely to see a picture of my late father in law playing in the Folk Group competition with a squad o' weel kent (and much younger faces!). I noticed a picture of Mr Peters from a few years ago!
