19 Jan 14 - 04:30 PM (#3593624) Subject: Line wanted, Doomeammer song Tawney From: Gurney Just starting to digitise my old songbook(Tedious!) and I'm missing the last line of this song. Can anyone help? I suppose it is just another repetition. Cyril sang it. The Doomehammer Song/Jack the Sailor Trad While Jack was out one day a'walking he heard a squire and a lady talking As jack came by, he heard them say that they thatnight together would lay Ch) With his doomyhammer-deemyhammer-doomyhammer day Fol-de-roller riddle-roller whack fol-de-day "Tie a bit of string onto your finger and let it hang out of the window I'll come by and pull the string and you come down and you let me in." "Blow me," says Jack, "If I don't venture! I'll come back and I'll try and catch her, I'll come by and I'll pull the string and she'll come down and she'll let me in." As Jack outside her bedroom lingered, he saw the string hanging down from the window He pulled and tugged all at that string, and she came down and she let him in "Who are you, and where do you come from?" "My name is Jack, and my ship's the London And I came by, and I saw the string, and I'm well-trained at the signaling What happened next, I needn't mention, but every night she'd the same attention Jack'd come by and he'd pull the string, and she'd come down and let him in So come all young girls who love a sailor, tie a bit of string onto your finger |

He didn't include it in 'Grey Funnel Line'. I've a vague recollection this version came from Bert Lloyd. He was one of the first to sing it in the revival. |

20 Jan 14 - 03:12 PM (#3593935) Subject: RE: Line wanted, Doomeammer song Tawney From: GUEST,Guest TF Doesn't it usually end up with "14 sailors pullin' on the string, she's come down and she's let 'em all in"? |
20 Jan 14 - 03:25 PM (#3593940) Subject: RE: Line wanted, Doomeammer song Tawney From: Steve Gardham I think that ending, TF, is in Peter Bellamy's remake called 'Yarmouth Town'. The original story features in a long 18th century ballad 'The Merchant's Courtship to the Brazier's Daughter'. Just for info the Roud number is 511 and Laws number K40. My Master Title is 'Jack the Jolly Tar'. |

20 Jan 14 - 04:56 PM (#3593970) Subject: RE: Line wanted, Doomeammer song Tawney From: Gurney Yes, GSS, that was my thought too. Thanks for the thoughts, folks. I've no idea how I lost the line, but it just isn't there in the songbook. Possibly I recorded the song from memory, my memory for lyrics was fairly good once, and I could memorise a simple 'story' song like this at one hearing. Nowadays, however..... Hence the tidying of the songbooks. Unfortunately most of 'my' songs could be described as 'standard' versions, and I also made no notes of where I got them from. Mistake! Cyril was of course a collector as well as a performer, in his younger days he recorded source singers in the field. I wonder if Rosemary will ever make his recordings public. Perhaps the EFDSS should contact her, if they haven't already. |

I went looking for the Tawney website to ask her, and came upon her obit. on Mudcat. Missed it at the time. I was communicating with her about that time, and sent her my recording of a Cyril appearance. She wanted his chat and preambles. |
20 Jan 14 - 08:30 PM (#3594041) Subject: RE: Line wanted, Doomeammer song Tawney From: GUEST Cyril recorded the song on what I think was his last CD - "Nautical Tawney" 2003 on ADA Recordings. He sings most of what appears above but the final line is: "He'll come by and he'll pull the string And you come down and you let him in." Tim Radford |

I remember her from the last time we met, at Plymouth's Barbican Grecian Club venue, where I was a regular for a couple of years. Thinking about it, about 1969ish!! Time goes on. |
