21 Jan 14 - 01:16 PM (#3594317) Subject: The Newfolks - Hull group? From: nboldock Hi all, I acquired a fairly obscure folk EP today by a group called The Newfolks. I am trying to find a little more information about it (primarily for curiosity's sake but also as I collect records from Hull, which this is). There is a link to the record (with images of the cover and labels) here - The Newfolks. It was definitely recorded in Hull as you can see, but I'd love to know if the band were also from Hull. The sleevenotes on the back cover (click it to make it bigger) give names of the band members which might help. The record doesn't have any dates on it but I'd say it's either late 60s or early 70s. There were though lots of strange comings and goings in the surrounding countryside and this group may have been part of that set up. None of the names mean anything. The 60s and 70s brought an expansion of further education to Hull as well as lots of other places and I suspect that the people involved in the recording were either students or college staff. Where is 592 Hessle Road? - certainly inwards of the Dairycoates level crossing I would have thought. (I have brothers living at 8** which is quite close to Pickering Park.) Will be interested to see where this goes to. |

I did also look on the Net to see what I could find out about the Malconi label but drew a blank. There is another single on 45Cat on the label which is a student rag single from 1964 (also folk by the looks of things) but I couldn't find a single reference to the label/studio apart from that. Incidentally we played the record last night and it's really quite good. There was a Tony Cocking who taught at Hull Tech College (according to the wonderful Web, anyway) that I suspect is the same person who did the sleeve notes. Nboldock. |

From: GUEST The strange comings and goings I referred to were some short-lived clubs and groups who weren't really part of and sometimes not even aware of the mainstream folk scene. Nothing wrong with that of course. Now someone has mentioned colleges/universities, this seems like the most likely option. In my own college days in Hull I was part of various clubs and groups that for obvious reasons were fairly short-lived. |

I didn't get involved in the Hull folk scene until 1965 so that might explain why I didn't recognise the names. If they are pre 65 that makes them more interesting to our Archive so please let us know if you find out more. Whilst the Watersons alias the Folksons were doing the coffee shops and jazz club from about 61 onwards they didn't become the Watersons and start Folk Union One at the Blue Bell until 1963. If the Newfolks were around that early it's quite possible they're plucking harps by now. |

From: Steve Gardham Nick We had a rehearsal today and Bill Sowerby said the studio was still there in the late 60s so they weren't knocked down when the flyover was built. He knows of other groups who recorded there and actually had a look round the studio himself. There is a Fergus Hope (Not a common name) living in Newcastle and in the 80s he was playing banjo/guitar in the Jesmond Jazz Band. Could be your man. Try Googling. From: GUEST I was at the Training College in Hull between 1963 and 1966 (Not playing a harp yet Steve) and bought this record when it was new.The New Folks were 'of' the college and University, I think they were students. I'm pretty sure they split up when they left college. I have been singing 'Last Word of a bluebird' and 'Hawthorne White'for some years now. I think, after checking the sleeve notes,that the tunes were written by Tony Hurlin. Did he write the words too? There was a Folk Club conected to the University. They were probably members of that. From: GUEST Just to clarify Steve's earier post what I actually said was that I remember the studio being opened sometime in late 1966/67. I had friends who were involved on the local pop scene at the time and they got me a ticket to look round the studio on its opening day. I have two EPs on the custom Processed Pea label (yeah, I know that's not strictly Hull, but near enough!), with catalogue numbers PPL2 and PPL3. One is the "Yorkshire Born And Proud Of It" EP (Pete Smith & Friends), the other the "Hessle Road" one (Pete Smith again) which also has "Beverley Market" on it and other bits. The catalogue numbers suggest there must have been a "PPL1" record released before these two - does anyone know what it was? And indeed, does anyone know if there were any subsequent [vinyl] releases after these? I'm assuming Pete Smith was a Hullensian, is he still around?
