The Newfolks - Hull?

Subject: The Newfolks - Hull group?
From: nboldock

Hi all,

I acquired a fairly obscure folk EP today by a group called The Newfolks. I am trying to find a little more information about it (primarily for curiosity's sake but also as I collect records from Hull, which this is).

There is a link to the record (with images of the cover and labels) here - The Newfolks.

It was definitely recorded in Hull as you can see, but I'd love to know if the band were also from Hull.

The sleevenotes on the back cover (click it to make it bigger) give names of the band members which might help.

The record doesn't have any dates on it but I'd say it's either late 60s or early 70s. There is a YouTube link to one of the tracks on the above link.

All information gratefully received!

Cheers
Nick

I was around in the 60s 70s on the mainstream Hull folkscene and none of this, names or any of it is familiar. There were though lots of strange comings and goings in the surrounding countryside and this group may have been part of that set up. If they were part of the Hull scene in any way I would also be interested as we're currently compiling an Archive of the Hull folk scene. Have a look at our page on Facebook for further info. Hi,

I've seen your page and have joined it/liked it :-)

I found a bit of very vague info on a couple of the band members and I think at least one of them either taught or studied at Hull Tech College so it looks like they may indeed have been locals.

Hopefully find out more in due course :-)

Cheers
Nick.

Had a listen and a think.

One of the singers certainly seems to be Hull / Surrounds.

None of the names mean anything.

The 60s and 70s brought an expansion of further education to Hull as well as lots of other places and I suspect that the people involved in the recording were either students or college staff.

Where is 592 Hessle Road? - certainly inwards of the Dairycoates level crossing I would have thought. (I have brothers living at 8** which is quite close to Pickering Park.)

Will be interested to see where this goes to.

Hmm this is most intriguing.. especially the 'strange comings & goings in the surrounding countryside'. Altho i hope this didn't involve someone getting torched in a giant wicker effigy ;)

Haha :-)

A good point about the Hessle Road address, I may take a jaunt up that way at the weekend and see where it was.

I did also look on the Net to see what I could find out about the Malconi label but drew a blank. There is another single on 45Cat on the label which is a student rag single from 1964 (also folk by the looks of things) but I couldn't find a single reference to the label/studio apart from that.

Incidentally we played the record last night and it's really quite good.

There was a Tony Cocking who taught at Hull Tech College (according to the wonderful Web, anyway) that I suspect is the same person who did the sleeve notes.

Dairycoates Inn is number 580 so it's (was) somewhere near the flyover...

The strange comings and goings I referred to were some short-lived clubs and groups who weren't really part of and sometimes not even aware of the mainstream folk scene. Nothing wrong with that of course.

Now someone has mentioned colleges/universities, this seems like the most likely option. In my own college days in Hull I was part of various clubs and groups that for obvious reasons were fairly short-lived.

According to Google Earth 592 is over the flyover on the left in between Devon St and Dorset St. And it's still there.

Lesson, number one, don't trust Google Earth. Those properties are actually in the 720s if you virtually stand in front of them. Back to the map.

592 was one of the properties cleared in 1962 when the flyover was built. I didn't get involved in the Hull folk scene until 1965 so that might explain why I didn't recognise the names. If they are pre 65 that makes them more interesting to our Archive so please let us know if you find out more. Whilst the Watersons alias the Folksons were doing the coffee shops and jazz club from about 61 onwards they didn't become the Watersons and start Folk Union One at the Blue Bell until 1963. If the Newfolks were around that early it's quite possible they're plucking harps by now.

The chap who runs the vintage record stall in Hull Market is something of a buff on Hull music. He might have some info on Malconi.

Is he? I didn't know that. I may swing by at some point.

I will be sure to let you know if I do manage to find anything else out.

Looking forward to seeing the archive grow, by the way. Great stuff.

We had a rehearsal today and Bill Sowerby said the studio was still there in the late 60s so they weren't knocked down when the flyover was built. He knows of other groups who recorded there and actually had a look round the studio himself.

There is a Fergus Hope (Not a common name) living in Newcastle and in the 80s he was playing banjo/guitar in the Jesmond Jazz Band. Could be your man. Try Googling.

You can keep in touch via Les if you like.

I was at the Training College in Hull between 1963 and 1966 (Not playing a harp yet Steve) and bought this record when it was new.The New Folks were 'of' the college and University, I think they were students. I'm pretty sure they split up when they left college.
I have been singing 'Last Word of a bluebird' and 'Hawthorne White'for some years now. I think, after checking the sleeve notes, that the tunes were written by Tony Hurlin. Did he write the words too? There was a Folk Club conected to the University. They were probably members of that. Liz S.

Just to clarify Steve's earier post what I actually said was that I remember the studio being opened sometime in late 1966/67. I had friends who were involved on the local pop scene at the time and they got me a ticket to look round the studio on its opening day. It was above one of the shops near the pub at the foot of the Dairycoates flyover.

Hawthorne White and Hawthorne Red was written by Charles Causley. The verses are not all included in the song. I prefer the words on the New Folks record and shall continue to sing their version. Liz

That's interesting. Would the aforementioned Charles Causley be the one related to Jim Causley?

I just typed a response and buggered it up. Grrr.

I'm not typing it again so I'll just say thanks again for all the feedback.

The record now sits happily in the "Hull" section of our record collection where it will no doubt be joined by even more of the damn things :-)

Cheers
Nick

PS Be interesting to know for sure about the Causley link question above.

Is the pub still there?

Or did it make way for Lidl. I'll have a look next time I am that way.

Still there, Malcolm. Just past Lidl going from the roundabout.

BTW your photos can be copied at high resolution by Les who will no doubt confirm here shortly whenever you want to bring them into the metropolis.

Might be clear by the end of February but it might be easier for Les to visit us.

Since we're on a roll with the Hull folk mystery-solving, here's another one for you.

I have two EPs on the custom Processed Pea label (yeah, I know that's not strictly Hull, but near enough!), with catalogue numbers PPL2 and PPL3. One is the "Yorkshire Born And Proud Of It" EP (Pete Smith & Friends), the other the "Hessle Road" one (Pete Smith again) which also has "Beverley Market" on it and other bits.

The catalogue numbers suggest there must have been a "PPL1" record released before these two - does anyone know what it was? And indeed, does anyone know if there were any subsequent [vinyl] releases after these?

I'm assuming Pete Smith was a Hullensian, is he still around?

Any info appreciated as always - as you can tell I'm quite interested in all of this!

Cheers
Nick
