BS: Your favo(u)rite Beatles tribute song.

I know its about music but I just want to shoot the breeze and talk as fans not musicians. I'm assuming you are aware that they broadcast an all star concert from Ed Sullivan Theater to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first performance in the USA last night.

I am torn between Joe Walsh and Gary Clark Jr. doing "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" where the guitar playing was awesome and Paul and Ringo doing "Sgt Pepper/Help from my Friends" was kinda sweet.

I've always had a soft spot for Judy Collins' take on "In My Life".
Her version seems more achingly nostalgic than the original.

Nice Tunesmith. Lovely rendition. I liked the version on the special last night but not enough to remember who did it.

Naughty Bill says: "I Wanta Hold Your Hand" ...

Just your hand....

Tom Lehrer

I hold your hand in mine, dear,
I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite
From your dainty fingertips.

My joy would be complete, dear,
If you were only here,
But still I keep your hand
As a precious souvenir.

The night you died I cut it off.
I really don't know why.
For now each time I kiss it
I get bloodstains on my tie.

I'm sorry now I killed you,
For our love was something fine,
And till they come to get me
I shall hold your hand in mine.

...some things just can't be resisted. I wonder if The Beatles knew it? It certainly was around when they were gettin started.

My apologies for disagreeing,Gillymor. "I Will" is one of my favorite Beatles songs, but I don't think that Alison Krauss' version comes close to doing it justice. (Not that I could do any better!) Her vocals are good, and the band is good, but I miss the harmonies!

No need for an apology, guest. I prefer the Beatles' "I Will" also but I think Alison and her band do it pretty good.

Bainbo, thanks for that. Big Julie Fowlis fan here.

My favorite Beatle cover is probably Eric Schoenbergs' fingerstyle guitar version of I'll Get You. Not really a great song but one of their best melodies, IMO.

How about "Titles" by Barclay James Harvest

The long and winding road that leads to your door
Here comes the sun it's alright people shout for more
But were you trying to deceive telling me
All you need is love to succeed
Across the universe one after nine 'o' nine
I got a feeling for you blue and I feel fine
I tried so hard to make believe that I'd see
All you need is love to succeed

Lady Madonna let it be
Something in the way you moved me yesterday
All you need is love so they say

Most Beatles songs are better with harmonies.

Agreed! - We have not had a harmonist to equal McCartney since him.

Lennon was the ideas man.
Harrison was the grafter.
Ringo was the fun guy.

I thought the three guys in front were all good at harmony. I love John's harmonies on Paul's lead vocals. Their voices all blended so well on the choruses. It was amazing I think it is why they credited the Everly Brothers as a key influence.

I've got to agree with the Spooky Tooth version of 'I am the walrus'. Also Emmylou Harris singing 'Here, there and everywhere', featuring Amos Garrett with some great guitar.
The mention of 'Cheese and onions', a favourite track of John Lennon's apparently, may confuse people who are not familiar with the Rutles (the Prefab Four). The spoof documentary 'All you need is cash' featuring Eric Idle, contains all the songs that the Beatles never got round to writing, but fortunately Neil Innes was available to help out. Buy or borrow it!

Absolutely with Les. The Rutles were a very marvellous thing, and the film should be watched by everyone.
