I usually only purchase brand new gear when it's just been discontinued and at last chance discount price..

Today I noticed Zoom H2n as low as £99 brand new boxed from UK sellers on google shop search.

Amazon is doing it with the optional official accessories pack bundled for £119...

[so that's what I've just gone for]

If like me you've also fancied getting one but held off buying,
maybe now's a good price ???

For any mudcatters not familiar with this portable recorder,
here's one of the best quick demos I can find on youtube.

Similar prices now worldwide; good value for money. Buyers should make sure to obtain a warranty; early series were damage-ridden. Update the firmware.

I've had a Zoom H2 for years, an earlier model. The improvements in the newer model are significant and I'm tempted to buy a new one, but I love the one I have.
Audacity is great, free software for editing your Zoom recordings.

I have a Zoom H2 and a newer H2n. Use both of them for recording interviews for radio. The best features for me are ease of use, size and reproduction with, a big plus, I can lend them out to other folks to record stuff for me and give them the minimum of training. Switch on, record, switch off. Practically idiotproof!

I have a Zoom 4 and I highly recommend them.
Sounds like a bargain to me.

I have an H2 and find it absolutely superb but I'm tempted by the update.

Is there enough difference to warrant buying the new model when the old model is still working well (except for the pitifully small screen which is a challenge for my aging eyes!)

Cheers,

Weasel.

I retired my old H4>/b> for studio use only, and bypassed the H2n for the H1 as my field-recorder of choice. So far so very splendid! AND it fits snugly into a £2 sunglasses case with all the gubbins (tripod / headphones / spare battery / wind shield*).

The only thing I don't like is the micro-SD card, but I'm getting used to it. Oh, and the crappy plastic modelling too which has always been an issue with Zoom stuff in general despite otherwise excellent products. Our main machine in the studio these past few years has been an R24.

* A tip for all Zoom H series recorders: for out-door recording stuff the whole thing into a condenser mic pop shield. The H4 fits very snugly into those made for large diaphragm models which would take the H2 very nicely too. I use a smaller one on the H1. The old H4 came with a foam plastic black clown-nose which was neither use nor ornament...

Remember that if left on auto record level, quality often no better than a 1980s cheap cassette recorder. I recommend using manual record setting and use 50% level as a maximum, to avoid distortion from sudden peaks in sound level. Audacity (free) or better Adobe Audition CC (free from kickass torrents) can be used to bring up sound level/correct phase/ add top end sparkle etc afterwards!

You reminded me that I had to upgrade the card, which I recommend.

I believe that you can also use this device simply as a microphone, plugged into a USB slot and recorded by whatever PC software.

Is this right? And if so, are the results any good?

Thanks

Ed: yes. The quality of the results would be the same as when recording on the internal storage medium, were it not for the noise of the computer itself (fan, hard disk). Shield it best you can - this applies to other sources of noise as well.

A couple of years ago, we found a sale on Zooms, and my wife got an H2, while I just took the H1. I use mine mostly for memory and learning, and I often keep it in my camera bag with several mounting adapters for setting up almost anywhere..... then I bought a small tool 'holster' at a hardware store and removed unnecessary clips, so I have a belt holster for the H1. I can activate it almost instantly in any of these configurations and we find I use the H1 much more than she uses the H2.... but having both is sure nice!

I bought one of the original Edirol. R09. It was pricey but an excellent bit of kit which I still have. The original Zoom came out and undercut it by about 50% and Roland lost out big time as they were slow bringing their price down for the Edirol. From what I have read, the Edirol was a better bit of kit but not better enough to compensate for the price difference.

If a Zoom H2 can be got for around £100, it suggests to me they have a replacement due out or they will discontinuing it as sales are declining as people are either buying the H1 for its portability or the H4 for it's greater feature set and the H2 is left in the middle with no real advantage over either.

My R09 is still going strong but it is getting dated. It has the original firmware in still and is limited to 2 GB cards which I don't really find a problem except that 1 & 2 GB cards are getting hard to find now so I am considering a replacement.
