25 Feb 05 - 06:08 PM (#1421085) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Cam' Ye By Atholl From: Malcolm Douglas Not, strictly speaking, a traditional song. The lyric was written by the poet James Hogg (1770-1835), and appears with music in typical collections of Scottish "national" song, usually with piano accompaniment and sometimes with the alternative spellings Athole or Athol. The melody is attributed to Niel Gow the Younger, grandson of the famous fiddler Niel Gow. Here is an updated link to staff notation at Richard Robinson's Tunebook: Cam' ye by Atholl |

Here's Hogg's original, from Charles Rogers, The Scottish Minstrel: The Songs Subsequent to Burns (William P. Nimmo, 1872 ed., p. 108): BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE By James Hogg Cam' ye by Athol, lad wi' the philabeg, Down by the Tummel or banks o'the Garry, Saw ye our lads wi' their bonnets and white cockades, Leaving their mountains to follow Prince Charlie? Follow thee! follow thee! wha wadna follow thee? Lang hast thou loved and trusted us fairly! Charlie, Charlie, wha wadna follow thee, King o'the Highland hearts, bonnie Prince Charlie? I ha'e but ae son, my gallant young Donald; But if I had ten they should follow Glengary! Health to M'Donnell and gallant Clan-Ronald-- For these are the men that will die for their Charlie! Follow thee! follow thee! etc. I'll to Lochiel and Appin, and kneel to them, Down by Lord Murray, and Roy of Kildarlie; Brave M'Intosh, he shall fly to the field with them, These are the lads I can trust wi' my Charlie! Follow thee! follow thee! etc. Down through the Lowlands, down wi' the Whigamore! Loyal true Highlanders, down wi' them rarely! Ronald and Donald, drive on, wi' the broad claymore, Over the necks o' the foes o' Prince Charlie! Follow thee! follow thee! wha wadna follow thee? Lang hast thou loved and trusted us fairly! Charlie, Charlie, wha wadna follow thee, King o'the Highland hearts, bonnie Prince Charlie? |

27 Feb 05 - 12:02 AM (#1422035) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Cam' Ye By Atholl From: masato sakurai From William Donaldson, The Jacobite Song: Political Myth and National Identity (Aberdeen University Press, 1988), p. 104: By no means all of Hogg's Jacobite songs found their way into the Relics. One of the most famous, 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', was first printed in The Border Garland, a pamphlet of nine songs issued in 1819. It reappeared in the edition of the Shepherd's Songs in 1831 with the following disparaging note:Is it not singular how this song should have been so popular? There can be no dispute that it is one of my worst. The air was...given me by my friend the late Mr Neil Gow, and to it I dashed down the words at random. |
