Here is the version the Dubliners sing.

The Zoological Gardens

Thunder and lightning is no lark
When Dublin City is in the dark.
So if you have any money go up to the park
And view the zoological gardens.

We went up there to see the zoo,
We saw the lion and the kangaroo.
There was he-males and she-males of every hue
Up in the zoological gardens.

We went out there by Castleknock
Says she to me, "shall we court on the lough?"
Then I knew she was one of the rare old stock
From outside the zoological gardens

We went up there on our honeymoon,
Says she to me, "if you don't come soon
I have to get in with the hairy baboons"
Up in the zoological gardens.

Says she to me, "it is seven o'clock
And time for me to be changing my frock
For I love to see the old cockatoo"
Up in the zoological gardens.

Says she to me, "My lovely Jack,
Sure I'd love a ride on the elephants back."
"If you don't get out of that I'll give you such a crack"
Up in the zoological gardens.

That's not "court on the lough" -
it's "cure it in the Locke", the Locke (or was it Lock?) being a hospital with a VD clinic.

Mind, that's a nice alternative version for polite society. Though it's not really a sonmgh for polite society.

The Lock Hospital was in Townsend St. in Dublin - turns up in the Dublin versions of The Unfortunate Rake/St. James Infirmary etc. family. I've never heard of it in this context. Any idea how long its been arouind?

Wolfgang, I cant find you post but here is the Dominic Behan version.

Thunder and lightning is no lark
When Dublin City is in the dark.
Would you care to go to the Pheonix Park
And view the zoological gardens.

I went up there on me honeymoon,
We saw the lions and the ould baboon
And we strayed for a while neath the silvery moon
Around the zoological gardens.

Says she to me, me dear fried Jack,
Sure I'd love a ride on the elephants back.
If yeh don't get outa that I'll give you such a smack
Around the zoological gardens.

But Jack, says she to give you yer due
There's nothn jumps around as well as you
Not even the big Australian kangaroo
Around the zoological gardens

Oh Lord says I now don't be daft
She says it's true and yer not to laugh,
But yer lovely and long like the spotted giraffe
Up in the zoological gardens.

We went out there by Castleknock
Says she to me, "shall we court on the lock"
Then I knew she was one of the rare old stock
Outside the zoological gardens

Jon

I don't think so. The Dubliners definitely sing the third verse as ...

We went out there be (by) Castleknock
Says she to me: "Sure! We're caught on the lock!"
Then I knew she was one of the rare old stock
From outside the Zoological Gardens.

... I've always interpreted this as being simply that they've missed the gates closing and been locked into the park overnight. This used to happen, and probably still does, with Greenwich Park in London.

Brendan Behan had it slightly different for the honeymoon verse:
We went up there on our honeymoon
We saw the giraffe and the hairy baboon
There were parrots and larks and two doves a-cooing
All in the Zoological Gardens

Brendan also has these verses in one of his books.John Bull's Other Island , I think.

We went for a stroll by the old park gate
The policeman he was on his beat
And he tried to make love to me darling Kate
all in the Zoological Gardens

If you don't stop that you'll ruin me frock
If you don't hurry soon Dumphy's door will be locked
I can hear the bell ringing for seven o'clock
Outside the Zoological Gardens

At Dumphy's door the tram did stop
We were just in time for a wee little drop
And I kissed her for one of the rare old stock
Outside the Zoological Gardens

Dumphy's was a pub near the park .

A good song. I am sure you all know the parody that was popular in UK folk clubs in 1950s/60s. Not sure who adapted it, but probably of Irish origin.
Called JOIN THE BRITISH ARMY. Cannot remember it all.

When I was young I used to be
A fine a man as you'd ever see
The Prince of Wales he said to me
Join the British Army

Too ra loo ra looraloo
Looking at monkeys up in the zoo
And if I had a face like you
I'd join the British Army

I can put up The Dubliners' lyrics of "Come And Join The British Army" if required, but they're probably somewhere here already. However, I don't think it's a parody of Zoological Gardens, just has a similar or identical tune sung at a faster tempo.

"Ridim-a-didim-a-didim-a-soo
They're looking for monkeys up in the zoo
And if I had a face like you
I'd join the British Army"

Only connection I see.

It's closer to the sexy Dublin song Aisy and Slow and to Peadar Kearney's Down By the Liffy side than to toor a loo , Dave .

Martin. Do you have any ideas on when Zoological Gardens was written or first published ?

The short answer is - NO! The long answer is that I'm surprised the thought never struck me before. I'll have a look... - and ask some of the usual suspects.

You and your gang always seem to come up with something , Martin . I was surprised the Dublin Zoo entry on wiki doesn't mention the song.

I think the third verse is actually :

We went out there by Castleknock
Says she to me, "Hang your coat on the lock"
Then I knew she was one of the rare old stock
From outside the zoological gardens

The 'rare old stock' being a lady of pleasure, who used to ply her trade there, and a coat (or other garment) was hung on the lock, covering the keyhole, for privacy in case the Garda took an interest

I believe it is indeed "We'll court on the lock". Or possibly "lough" if there is one there. The zoo is in Phoenix Park. Castleknock is the adjacent neighborhood. The Royal Canal runs from the Liffey through Ashtown to Castleknock before heading out to Mullingar. So the geography is right, though I don't know if the canal has a lock right there.

"Court" is an old word for what was called "making out". It could include more than kissing and petting, but did not have to. The unforunate young man caught "Coortin' in the kitchen" probably kept his pants on for all the good it did him.

I think the lady in "Zoological Gardens" was pretty enthusiastic about making out, and in the song, her being of the "rare old stock" seems to have resulted in a wedding ring and eventual children.

Dominic in his album “Irish Songs” (1958) writes “The Zoological Gardens I got from Mr Brown who sings it regularly in a public house in Kimmage“

so I took the moth (1) up to see the zoo
We saw the lions and the kangaroos
Inside the zoogical gardens

Would you like a ride on the elephant’s back (4)
If you dont get out of that

As I mentioned in a post on the Youtube site, I’m fascinated by the reference to the Kimmage pub. I was reared around the corner from the only pub in Kimmage, in the ‘50’s. My late father could probably have identified the mysterious Mr. Brown!
