These lyrics appear in Ozark Folksongs: Religious Songs and Other Items by Vance Randolph, Floyd Calvin Shoemaker, & Frances Guthrie Emberson (Columbia, MO: State Historical Society of Missouri, 1950), page 123:

BECKY AT THE LOOM

Sung by Mrs. Linnie Bullard, Pineville, Mo., July 7, 1926. Mrs. Bullard learned the song in 1880 from a man who told her that it was written during the Civil War by a wounded Confederate colonel.

1. In the month of mild October, when the cotton was in bloom,
I strayed to good old Georgia, made it my happy home,
I have visited many a merry scene, which has been my pleasant doom,
None has such charms as when I saw sweet Becky at the loom.

[Chorus?] I cannot help from thinkin', no matter what my doom,
Of the happy moments when I saw sweet Becky at the loom.

2. I watched her tapered fingers as they danced among the warp,
And shot the little shuttle as though it could not be caught,
A quill would soon be empty, as you may well presume,
It was a happy sight to see sweet Becky at the loom.

3. A naughty thread perchance would break, but not a word she'd say,
But gently tie a little knot and put it through the sley,
The shuttle next would drop, and with color her face would bloom,
It sure was a bewitchin' sight, sweet Becky at the loom.

4. My home is in the sunny South, in the Mississippi vale
Where happy scenes and love do j'ine, and friendship is not frail,
As dear a spot as this I'd leave, to Georgia I would roam,
If I could see but once again sweet Becky at the loom.
