This will be an Essex event located in the large attractive grounds of a museum late this summer. The lady who's asked me to help organise this event at first suggested a food and drink festival, I suggested adding in folk as it pairs well with food and drink. So there will be marquees and local beer, local vinyard tastings, hog roast that kind of thing. local sausages. oysters and stout. The museum is a small charity, so we're looking to get plenty of people attending and hopefully some sponsorship from local business and so on. It's all about raising the profile of the museum and getting people in and spending a bit of cash. I think some good lively semi-acoustic 'folkish' music would work well in that kind of context. Anyone got any ideas at all about the whole project, funding, exhibitors, suppliers, sponsership, the right kind of bands (suitable for families and non-folky audience), please send them this way. Anyone with knowledge of hosting and organising similar (or even non related) events please post away. Ideas are very much in the seed-sowing stages! |

Trades, art or craft? you do want to match up the audience with the theme of the museum... extreme example... a punk band may bring in a crowd... but not likely to enhance enrollment or sponsorship. So look for a group that has a repertoire that fits the museum's theme. if the grounds are large, consider having space (gratis or reduced fee) for table setups from area organizations to promote themselves as well as space for commerical exhibitors & food providers. These folks can be tapped as a source of festival workers. do you have enough weather protected areas to serve as "rain sites" should the weather turn foul... and a safe place to set the sound equipment. |

The building itself was built in the 20's - however the key benefit for this event would be that there are seven acres of very pleasant land in which the museum is housed, with trees and a river running through. Another thought that strikes me is that there is plenty of room for camping (they currently have camping but could do a lot more), so we might want to consider a 'foodie' event during the day and switching over to more of a beer and music focus in the evening. |

Ouch. Daytime events could include local craft people and environmental groups... give workshops on the local environment. our town has a small fiddler's fair that's been held at a local sugar bush (tree farm that taps sugar maple trees to make maple syrup products) and folks can walk the trails & stop at areas that have muscians playing or nature workshops given. And we have local restaurants as food venders, local craft people and artists to display their wares, small farmers bring produce, herbs and potted plants... you get the idea. The stage is next to the sugar house & a large tent provides a sheltered area for the audience. The local school provides buses to bring people in from the parking area which is too far away to walk. it closes at 6 PM & no alcohol or dogs allowed... |

Why not switch off the computer, buy one of the organisers a few drinks, and get a few tips. |
