Sad news of John's death on Saturday after many long months of debilitating illness. A huge loss of talent and knowledge.

I believe Gordon Hotchkiss will have a tribute programme tomorrow (Wednesday 9th April) at 19.00 on Celtic Music Radio.

Funeral arrangements still to be announced, I think it will be sometime next week.

Sad news, indeed.

John was a man of many parts -- he was a fine and inspirational concertina player who championed the great repertoire of Scottish pipe tunes; he made sensitive settings of poems by Scottish poets Violet Jacob and Joe Corrie; he resurrected many tongue-twisting dialect songs; he wrote hilarious comic songs in the music-hall idiom; and in his more dogmatic moments he personified Rab C. Nesbitt in full rant mode!
He was also a member of the influential Scottish group The Clutha from the mid-late 60's, and more recently of the Glasgow group Stramash, with me and others.

He was special, a one-off, and will be MUCH missed.

I met him at Blairgowrie in 1967 and enjoyed his company & music then and irregularly afterwards before we moved to Kent & lost contact. Met him again at a wee festival in Crocketford, Galloway organised by Phyllis Martin about 10 years ago. He had origins in Galloway and came to the sessions we ran in Glentrool, and was greatly loved by the village people (not folkies)- he wrote some great stuff and will be sadly missed RIP bonny lad

Didn't know him that well but remember meeting him up at Killin Festival, sitting in the Loch Tay Hotel bar, underneath display cases of stuffed fish, singing some great songs, and playing his concertina, in fine form. Last time I saw him was at Innerleithen a few years back, when he came into our session.
Favourite song is "Inveroran" - not in the DT here, but on a thread from 2008 where I requested the lyrics.
Condolences to his family.

Always enjoyed his singing and playing both with The Clutha and Stramash. And his rants were fabulous! A gey sair miss.

John was a lovely man and a lovely singer - the best, to these north Irish ears, that I've ever heard, outside traditional singers, of bothy songs. I was in his company and that of his companion and partner 'Biff' Carmichael on many occasions - I hope someone will be able to pass her my condolences.
